MRSHINYVERSE

*My apologies if this has been posted recently, my computer won't let me look at the archived threads*

I was just thinking about Firefly & Serenity (as you do) and thought of the line in the BDM when the Operative is about to give the order to open fire on Serenity and he says something along the lines of "you should have let me see her, we should have done this as men" or something to those effect then I thought, Who would win in a fight between River and the Operative?

This might sound like a stupid question but I think the Operative may (probably not) have the upper hand, (not counting and assuming he can't use the word that makes River sleep - haven’t got the companion handy to quote it)

1) He knows Rivers combat training.

2) He knows she has psychic abilities.

3) River never finished her "training".

He might be able to think one thing with his mind then does something else (think right punch, do left kick etc). He might know how to counter the fighting styles River knows as he may have attended the academy to train himself (although he isn't psychic) - he is an assassin after all.

I know that some of you might say that Mal beat him so for River it would be a piece of piss but that was only because of that nerve thing the operative does to grant people an honourable death.

This then made me think of Jubal Early. He battered Mal in 5 secs (OK he caught him off guard) so could he give the Operative a run for his money? We don't know much of his background apart from him torturing his neighbours dog/pets and being insane but he was good a fighter from what we saw.

This is dragging on a bit and not making much sense so who do you all think

Round 1: The Operative Vs Jubal Early

Round 2: Winner of Round 1 Vs River

*EDIT - This is the one I'm keeping, I gave the the other one to the Kitty's/Ninja's & Pirates (I double posted this Thread if you haven't got a clue what I'm on about)*

Round 1: Operative. He wont get angry but Jubal will.

Round 2: River. Unlike Mal she'd've shot him in the face.

SINGATE

I'll go with the Operative in both fights. I think he would dispatch Early quite handily while a fight with River would be poetry in motion. The one thing I really looked forward to was seeing them face off in the BDM. Alas, Mal had the honor on two occasions. After the first encounter I think the Operative underestimated Mal which is how our captain got the upper hand in the rematch. For most of the second fight Mal pretty much got his ass kicked. In true bad guy fashion the Operative became cocky. Thinking the fight was won he just had to go for his Mortal Kombat style finisher instead of simply closing the deal.

Knowing how dangerous River is and the training she has received he would be all business, no showboating. I also believe those responsible for keeping River quiet would not send out an assassin who wasn't equiped to deal with her.

The last thing I would say is that a brawler like Mal or Jayne probably stands a better chance of winning a hand to hand fight. Against someone with "proper" training the Operative would be a very tough opponent.

In the paperback the operative realized Inara outwitted him with her training which he should have picked up on. His arrogance was his weakness. River would cut him up like fish bait. Jubal Early controlled the eviroment to catch her. River had to play a game of chess to bait him into a trapp. River's programing was excelling expectations. Rivers wins, wins, and wins.

Operative over Early. He's just the better all around fighter in my estimation.

Even vs River, I'd go with the operative. Not based on technique, but because even in the fight in the bar River wasn't invincible. She took some hits. I think she'd take some hits against the operative as well. She'd land more blows than he would, but she's no where near as built as the operative who also wore full body armor on both fighting occasions. I'd think he could take way more punishment than she could. In the end he'd take the tortoise route and defeat the hare.
