Good Morning, everyone!

The skies are incredibly dark here in MD - we are gonna get a Hella Thunderstorm soon...but my mood is pretty upbeat. Incredibly, my "No Smoking" stays in effect. I have stopped counting the hours smoke free. Weird, huh? I was really, really ready to quit. I just needed a mental kick in the butt to get over the emotional hurdle.

Thanks, Browncoat Friendlets!

For the first time in years, I like the way my hair smells. (And you know how I am about my hair...) I like not coughing in the morning. I like that my car doesn't smell like an ashtray.

I've had a few strong Nic fits, but nothing I haven't been able to talk myself down from. And Husband has been very supportive, smoking away from me, and keeping the carton in his truck. I am hoping my quitting will in turn help him quit.

EDIT: Kel, I love the pic of the Shatner first thing in the AM!!!

Anything to releave the tension there Mavs!

Glad you are starting to feel better about the quiting! Isn't weird how fast you actually start to recover senses when you do? Things smell different, taste different and such.

I doubt I would, but it was a quote I felt necessary to butcher.

Mav and Kel - Keep up the good work avoiding the cigs. We'll be here to give you a whoopin' any time that you feel you need motivation.

I've been doing what I can to stay part of the thread(s). I just find I can't stay away! FFF makes for a way to clear my mind from work.

Oop. Back to work.

Sugar is the only thing keeping me going! One vice at a time...but I'm trying to be a good dog with the munchables so that giving up smoking doesn't make the scale cringe when I come near! However, the choc covered apricots and altoids are mocking me...

Qualified: all bad (ie:processed) sugar. Unprocessed sugar is what makes us run; it's our fuel. But when the body has processing it's own fuel trouble ensues int the form of a fairly sure-fire, non-lofty way to quit sugar: Diabetes.

Then, my wife got diabetes. Well we're not sure when she got it for sure, but she was diagnosed with it. Anyway. I quit sugar. (until very recently) To help her quit. Yeah for me it'd be a diet thing. MisterG and I are both on a diet and in one month he lost 11 pounds and I lost 4...freakin 4 pounds! So very unfair. Then I saw how brave and strong Mav and Kelkhil and NV were being and I thought...I can do that. Sweets are my downfall ( well that and pizza) so I have already given up pizza and now I am giving up sweets.

Husband can give up sodas & hotdogs and loses 10 lbs. I give up the same and the scale doesn't change.

Thanks for the positives, msg. Like I said previously, I was in a physical place where quitting would be easy(er)...I didn't go cold turkey after smoking 2 packs a day.

OK I have a weird language oriented ponder...

the word commitment

If you had been sitting around with a group of friends and one casually suggests " We should get together. You could come over the next night to watch a ball game" and you say " sure that'd be fun " Would you say you'd made a commitment to be there??

Enough to the point that I'd tell the person if something else came up and I wasn't going to be able to make it. That or maybe I'd be waiting for them to send me an email or call me to tell me when to come over.

The key words for me in that conversation is "could" and the selection of a specific night.

If it was "You could come over some night..." and you say "sure, sounds fun" that isn't a committment. That's a promise of future committment.

If it was "You should come over on Tuesday night" and you say "sure, sounds fun" its a committment.

Huh. I have a fear of commitment. I'm afraid someone's going to commit me. I just made that up in my head but I am equally sure it's very old joke. The reason I'm "huh"ing is that I'm not sure this has ever happened before or even can happen: I agree with Zeek and Mavs. At the same time. Huh. oops i did it again.

Between friends it sounds like a committed activity. But, it seems a little open ended. It seems if the person couldn't make it they should call at the very least.

Seminar wasn't too bad. Didn't contribute anything since the majority of the two hours focused on the peasnatry before 1917 and all my reading was post 1917.

Now i am going to spend the weekend watching the Firefly weekend on Sci-Fi and attempt to do notes.

Hey all, gunna try to do some catch up here before running out to assault this gorgeous Friday (82° and sunny today, woot!).

Go Mavs and Kel! Keep it up! It's totally worth it. I was mostly a social smoker, but I did find myself really craving a cig when I was stressed. That's when I stumbled upon a little bit of something that I think everyone should know, smoker, ex-smoker, and non-smoker alike. What I realized is that when you're smoking, you breathe differently. You take in a very focused breath, hold it in, then blow it out purposefully. When I quit smoking, I found that if I just breathed like I was smoking, it really helped with the stress. I quit over 7 years ago, and I still use that breathing technique when I'm stressed.

MsG, good luck with the sugar thing. Last fall, hubby and I decided to give up corn syrup/high fructose corn syrup completely. It's crazy difficult -- corn syrup is in frickin everything -- but I'm glad we did it. It does mean basically giving up breakfast cereal and things like hamburger buns, but unlike when I've tried to give up all processed sugar, I don't feel deprived. We keep honey around for when I bake bread and for in tea and such, and I've switched to a sugar-free coffee syrup (hubby was already a Diet Coke man). And when we want a treat, we go with something that lists "sugar" instead of "corn syrup" on the label, like good chocolate or Ben&Jerry's. It is kind of shocking to me how many things corn syrup is in.

As far as commitment goes, I say as long as you call, your siblings will get over it. (Though I think my brother might kill you for missing a Jazz game, lol.)

Ok! Work! Optometrist appointment! Finish sewing my swimsuit so we can go to the beach tomorrow! Woo!

Highly caffeinated,

No it's my email...my hellspawn email. It's offline again!!! *(*()*(&*&^&!@#$%^&*()_!@#$%^&*!!!!@!@!@

So annoyed. Can't send or receive which is really causing serious problems right now as I am in the midst of this big deal thing with the district office and email being down makes me look at best flaky and at worst irresponsible. Not that it can't be corrected once email is back, but there are some time critical issues and the delay is becoming a real problem...and of course today I accidentally left my cell at home so I'd have to leave my students alone and go about 1/2 block down to the faculty room to make phone calls...!@#$%!@#$%^!@#$%^!!!!!!

Anyway...he didn't go without me 'cause I said I'd have to go if he did 'cause I'd be the only one who wasn't there....we've sorted it out.
