You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I'm sure Altoids would have a much harder time killing you than a caffeine inhaler

For some reason this is under caffeine accesories. Made me think of some of our patrons, so I thought I'd share.

My chocolate altoids are basically the only thing keeping me going. I've given myself one per hour as the incentive....hmm I wonder if there's a maximum dosage for them???

Ok, so I learnt something new today, was unaware that the yanks had got pints wrong as well as billions.

Still, tea doesn't come in pints so shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I'm off to watch the Champions League match, or possible read a book if the score line goes wrong.

Once you have a local directory full of pictures, you can use this tutorial:

http://tutorials.photobucket.com/tutorial_7.html

to just drag and drop your files from your open picture folder to photobucket. Lot easier than using the photobucket interface to do one at a time.

I've felt the same more than once. Don't panic, Emma, the feeling will pass and you'll become more confident with time. The good teachers are the ones who care enough to cry in a cupboard because they think they're not good enough! *hugs* A few classes that go south does *not* a crappy teacher make. *HUGS* I'm sorry to hear you had to do that (hide, curl up, and cry your eyes out). *More hugs and places a box of kleenex and a trash can beside Emma* The way it sounds to me, you are doing a good job as a very new teacher. You're working on your lesson plans, you correct your students' work (the very same day, no less), and trying very hard to make your lesson meaningful and interesting. (In fact, you might be overdoing it a bit if you're burning out.)

*waves whomever's at the bar to "hurry up" and bring some calming tea/hot chocolate/alcohol for Emma*

Some suggetions before you burn yourself out: Is there a co-worker nearby who has taught the course (or the type of students you're teaching) before that you can ask for help? See if they're willing to let you borrow (and adapt) some lesson plans for the rest of this week and most of next, or if they have some advice on the lessons you've planned so far...Maybe adjust your turnaround time for homework?

Listen to DancingNeko, Emma, for DancingNeko is wise.

Also, don't be afraid to have a look online. I slaved at preparing lesson plans before I found bundles of great ones available for free on the internet. Check out education sites and see what you come up with. Teachers love sharing ideas with other teachers, and you can easily adapt the plans and make them your own. Check out some education sites and see what you come up with.

STINKINGROSE

All the teachers here will be able to appreciate this one:

A friend of mine has taken over for a teacher who is out on sick leave.
She is working in middle school (7th&8th grade).
Classes have a tendency to "test" the new teacher/sub.

There are teams of teachers who follow a group of kids, and not all the kids are in the same class group all day.

At a team meeting she discovered that two of the girls (we'll just call them Jennifer and Tiffany) had been sitting at each others' places and handing in the other one's work and pretending to be the other girl in her class.
They had managed to get the whole class to play along.

The more senior teachers notified the vice principal who then called my friend in for a talk. My friend was actually impressed that the little darlings were good enough that they had managed to pull it off for over two weeks without a slip up, but VP said it was still inappropriate behavior by the girls. The VP has lunch duty, so he decides to really give them a hard time. He and the other teachers on the team start insisting that the two girls are *really* the other one. After a couple of days of freaking out, they had gotten the message and apologized to the new teacher.

She was tempted to not let them off the hook.

See? It's the kids! They really *are* out to get you!

It will be OK.

Sadly not. It's my first week back after the Easter 'break' but I've been here nearly 4 months now, and instead of getting better at it I find myself cutting more corners just to try and keep up with where I'm supposed to be up to, and still failing miserably to get them through everything on time. I had hoped that things would get easier but this does not seem to be the case. On the plus side I did start teacher training yesterday so I'm hoping to find a few tips as to how to teach more efficiently.

Thanks so much for all the encouragement guys! I really needed all those pep talks! It's not as if the other teachers here are nasty (well there is one that has upset me but I won't go into that) but this place is chronically understaffed and no-one really has time to chat or swap notes.

I've got my first severely handicapped group today which is a bit daunting. 14 of them! Yikes! I'm going to help them to clean the lizards - should be interesting!

Okay, enough of my problems, I want someone else to come and cry on my shoulder when I get back this afternoon so that I can give back some of that comfort and sympathy and feel less selfish and self-absorbed.

Come on, bring me your stresses and woes so that we can all feel as if we're not alone in our misery!

My personal favourite teacher nightmare story.

I teach English as a foreign language during the summer, to kids from other countries who are here to improve their English. It's *always* a nightmare, as they consider themselves on holidays and resent being made to *gasp* learn stuff.

Anyway, one guy I know had to deal with two German girls who just would not stop talking to each other. He kept making them sit apart every time they spoke, and eventually decided they should be made sit apart from the very beginning of class.

The next day, they were sitting together again.

He told them to move.

They said no.

He told them to move RIGHT NOW.

They informed him that they couldn't.

He asked "Why not?"

They lifted up their hands. They were handcuffed together.

One march down to the principal and what in Ireland is referred to as a "bollicking" (getting yelled at for being an idiot) later, the girls were placed in seperate classes.

It gets better.

Once the girl was home, the principal received a nasty letter from Daddy who was furious that someone had dared to discipline his precious daughter and seperate her from her friend.

The teacher had one question - "Is she coming back?"

The principal said no. Daddy had sworn never to bring his precious little girl to the school again. This made the teacher very happy.

I'm looking at schools. For being a student, though, not a teacher.

I am terrified.

Morning pretty Bryce

Terrified together sounds good. Better than being terrified alone.

*terrified face*

See, now that's a badge that I wear proudly. Nice article by the way Jonny.

Emma *bigassjimibearhuggles*, I am sorry to hear of your troubles, but I am going to echo what everyone else said about it: You are doing a much needed job, and if it is getting to you like it is, then I think it means you care enough to do that job right. :)

Rose & LA - good luck with the schoolin'. I miss GT (and Atlanta) somethin' fierce, and had I the finances I would do nothing but learn for the rest of my life.

* gets himself a big mug of Blue Moon with an orange wedge and sits to watch Shindig *

Blue Moon is a Belgian style witbier, similar to a heifenweisen (unfiltered wheat ale). It is made by Molson/Coors. It is served with an orange wedge for flavor and presentation.
