Just a couple nitpicking things on Drive in Florida.

On the Kennedy thing. There is no Cape Kennedy, it's always been Cape Canaveral, never changed. There is a Kennedy space center though. They don't let you get that close to shuttle either.

Quote:

From 1963 to 1973 it was called Cape Kennedy. President John F. Kennedy was an enthusiastic backer of the space program, and after his assassination in 1963, his widow Jacqueline Kennedy suggested to President Lyndon Johnson that renaming the Cape Canaveral facility would be an appropriate memorial. However, Johnson recommended the renaming not just of the facility, but of the entire cape. Accordingly, Cape Canaveral was renamed Cape Kennedy.

Although the name change was approved by the United States Board on Geographic Names of the Interior Department in 1964, it was not popular in Florida, especially in the city of Cape Canaveral, Florida. In 1973 the state passed a law restoring the former 400-year-old name, and the Board went along. The Kennedy family issued a letter stating they "understood the decision"; Jacqueline Kennedy also stated if she had known that the Canaveral name had existed for 400 years, she never would have supported changing the name of the Cape. The Space Center itself retains the "Kennedy" name.

Some outsiders still refer to the geographical feature as "Cape Kennedy", though it's typically used in the context of its continuing status as America's Spaceport.

Sorry, it was Cape Kennedy when my grandpa lived nearby - back in the mid 60's.

The Florida inaccuracy that bugged me (as another son of the sunshine state) was the fact that it obviously wasn't filmed in FL. After Alex (i'm trying to get in the habit of using the character's name instead of Nathan or Mal) wakes up on the side of the road you can see a big hill in the background. There aren't any big hills in Florida unless you get up towards Georgia, then there are a few. Definitely not any in the everglades either which is where the racers would have had to have been if they were going from the keys to cape canaveral. Growing up in Tampa the highest piece of ground around was the landfill. No hills. None. That was my only problem with the show. Besides that...well, I'll be eagerly tuning in tomorrow.

I checked the NASA website and your right about the name after all. I grew up in Tampa too during the sixties and no one ever told me they actually changed it. But then I was only five years old in '63. We always thought the northerners were mixing up the name of the Cape and the Space Center. Regarding hills in Florida there are a few but you can't really see them for the trees. I lived on top of the highest point in Hillsborough County (Tampa) at 114 feet elevation. Not too big but still a hill. I could stand on the road and look over the treetops in the distance.

I watched every Apollo launch while standing in my front yard. Most people don't know that just about everyone in the state can see all the launches if your looking the right direction at the right time. I saw shuttle launches from Miami and one in 1984 from just down the coast on the beach in Indialantic. That one was amazing as it curved out over the ocean. I still watch them when ever I'm back in the state, but no one else seems to care anymore. I'm usually alone with my radio waiting to spot the trail.

But I digress.

What part of Hillsborough you from Lance? My folks settled down in the Brandon Valrico area and the rest of my dad's side is scattered from there to the bay to Temple Terrace. BTW, most of my neighborhood still turns out to see the shuttle launches.

You're wrong about Florida. It looks just like California. Just like Korea looks like California (M*A*S*H), and many Enterprise-visiting planets look like California...

My personal annoyance is Hollywood's fake snowflakes that float on the surface of water...

I was bored to tears by Drive. Nathan, of course, was a stand-out and oh so very pretty to look at but I had no attachment to any of the characters at all. Sorry Tim Minear :(

I live in St. Pete and went to school in Daytona and loved (and still love) going outside to watch the Shuttle trial.

I aim to misbehave!

Nope , you are not alone...I wouldn't say that you
are 'digressing' , either.

When the weather is clear enough , I watch the shuttle ascents from coastal N. Carolina...They fly right by the East Coast , pretty close...We can see them within a few seconds of liftoff...One
time , the air was so clear , I could see the SRB separation , the boosters falling away , then slowing...Couldn't actually see the chutes , though...

On another ascent one evening , the SRB's left a shiny trail that drifted inland , and became a noctilucent cloud in the bright moonlight...Our local TV stations were besieged with calls about the 'weird cloud'...One woman was recorded saying that she thought it was " the end of time "...

My local airport is a 'contingency abort' site in the event an RTLS abort is not an option...I talked on the phone with a local air traffic controller about what they do to configure the airfield...After a few minutes of conversation ,
he asked me , " Who are you WITH ? " , so I began to cut it a little short...

I also have a hobby of watching for the shuttle and the ISS while they pass overhead...On the most recent mission , I was watching the last spacewalk on the Internet via NASA TV , and before the spacewalk was over , the Shuttle/ISS combo passed overhead that evening , brightly visible in our sky...

On that mission's ascent , there were about 60 people out on the beach watching the Shuttle go by...Some folks bring laptop PC's , with an aircard , so we can see on the Net when the launch is confirmed...Then we see the flare of the Shuttle a couple of seconds later...

I watched the Columbia on-orbit , a couple of days
before the tragic re-entry...Godspeed , STS-107...

I was not thrilled with the show, although I love Nathan and was happy to see him on the TV again. As stupid as this is going to sound, there was just too little plot and FAR FAR TOO MUCH....DRIVING.

I know, I know, it's called Drive and it's on Fox. That should have been my clue that I wasn't going to like it all that much.

I just had higher hopes for something from the guy who wrote (IMO) the absolutely best TV episode EVER (Out Of Gas).

I'll keep watching for a bit longer because, well, there is Nathan and I'm curious where they are going with the whole plot. But there needs to be less DRIVING and more ACTING.

Just my opinion, but I'm a 40 year old geologist. Definitely not the demographic that Fox is shooting for.

Oh, and the bitchy woman's name is Ivy - that didn't please me all that much either!!

I saw 20 minutes of it ... tuned in to the premiere with moments to go before the end of hour one ....

Nathan did a great job ... he even said "hunh" at one point

I found myself overwhelmed with all the characters being shown in like five minutes ....

I saw all these characters either on their own or being forced to consider doing harm to the other racers ...

I felt overwhelmed

The building they were standing in front of, looking across to the shuttle launch pad, was the Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena, California. Pretty funny.
