This has probably already been discussed (knowing how ear-to-the-ground everybody is), since the Wired article is dated December 2006...

http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2006/12/72263

...but what can I say? December is chock full of football, and I must've missed the initial thread. Maybe some other folks did too...

If it hasn't been discussed:
Hooray for us! We're finally getting a Firefly MMOG! Within the next year!

If it has been discussed previously:
Oops...

In either case, if ever there was a property that simply screamed for a MMORPG, it's Firefly. I've been crying about the lack of one for at least 4 years.

Hopefully,

zoid

There has been numerous threads.

Don't get your hopes up all ready though. What has happened, is that the Multiverse creators has received permission to hire a team of MMO developers to use their Multiverse engine, to create a Firefly mmo. This means, that there is currently no development on the project(I might be wrong though), as no they haven't selected any developer.

Good news about this, is that the engine is mostly ready, meaning if they get a developer, a game could soon be out.

Yeah, I figured it was old news...

However, the Multiverse team used to be Netscape developers, so, 'bonus!'; and they must have paid out some actual cashy money to F*x on their gamble that they could find a proper developer for the property...

So, on the whole, I'd have to say I'm pretty optimistic that they'll deliver.

...unless the company goes 'tango uniform' in the meanwhile.

Tardily,

zoid

P.S.
Thanks for not grilling me.

Well I'm optimistic too... it's just that so much could actually go wrong, and nothing is worse than getting hyped up for something that eventually turns out to be the so called vaporware(meaning it never reached a releasable state)

But yeah... they'll probably find a developer and we'll have a new home. I haven't tried the multiverse engine demo, but as far as I've heard it should be pretty decent.

Anyways, I guess there'll be more news on the project later this year.

Its actually likely to be great timing, a heap of WoW players are quitting right now and over the next 12 months are going to be looking for the NEXT BIG THING. A lot of WoWers are also coats so fingers crossed that this game lives up to the hype!

I don see why there aint more games an stuff based on firefly/srenity verse. Would make a great X3 style space exploration/trading game. A cool FPS and even a Total war type stratagy game
still on-line would be great too.
There is of course a pen and paper RPG out there which is pretty good

He's lookin to shoot some folk!

'pen and paper'... What're those? *looks it up in encyclopedia* Ahhh! Archaic 'handwriting' instruments...

The problem with P&PRPGs is that you either: a.) must live very close to at least four other aficionados of the game, both style and content; or, b.) play with yourself, while acting out all the various male and female roles. In a word, ewww! Whilst, in the best scenario, it would undoubtedly help one form unbreakable bonds with friends, coworkers and neighbors, I personally find that I know more about those fine folks than I'm comfortable with, already. Additional intimate detail is not something I'm desirous of. ...And in the worst scenario, you'd probably wind up climbing a tall tower with Daddy's deer rifle, while wearing Mommy's undergarments...

An MMOG, otoh, allows one to interact with potentially thousands of the best possible game AIs: Actual (human) Intelligences. I'd really like to see a Firefly game with both online and single-player storyline (written by Joss Whedon and Company, s'il vous plait); but, a Firefly MMOG is the first one I'd actually pay a monthly subscription fee to participate in.

Just think (and try not to drool): It'd be pretty much like FFFn, except set in a virtual world, from a socialization standpoint. You could have your SereniTree and similar haunts/bars where folks just went to share a little zaniness, or talk politics, or whatever. And of course, become a part of the 'verse itself in mission play.

My son is an avid Final Fantasy online player, and most of what he does is chat with other players. Imagine getting your own Firefly, filling it with cargo, crewing it with other FFFn'ers, and then spending a lot of time traversing the intervening Black...in the galley, sharing a laugh over a story the Shepherd told about one of the brothers from the abbey, or playing 'throw the fuel bladder through the engine coupling' down in the hold...

That my friends, would be pretty sweet, indeed.

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
Firefly Online: "Find a ship, find a crew, find a job. Any job. Keep flying." ...Like I said, try not to salivate excessively.

P.P.S.
Given the BDHs' willingness to interact with fans in forums (especially AB): Imagine the actual Jayne getting into a virtual barfight with you 'cuz you took exception to his Conservative political views...or signing on to be your merc for a short hop to Whitefall... Dude.

There are honestly some features which they NEED:

- Being able to fly in space of course
- Being able to have a crew or be a part of a crew
- Being able to share property such as spaceships
- Being able to walk around inside your ship while travelling/when on the ground. Your spaceship should be like a portable house
- Being able to built property. Imagine having your own house or store on the outer planets. Running your buisness like badger or something :P

I tried the multiverse demo client by the way. Of course it VERY unpolished and more flawed than a 14 yeared old pimple infested kiddy face, but it has potential. They've implemented basics such as moving around(WASD keys) combat(point and click), spells and more. I could easily see how being on ground would be like. They need to polish it big time and fill it with content.

The thing I'm worried about is how they'll add the aforementioned features? They are necessary to get the firefly feel we all love.

P.S. Lol a bar fight with Jayne? Would be awesome!... until he beats you senseless and then procedes to rip you of your belongings...

I can give an update on this. They haven't even selected a developer yet, so there's no way it's going to make 2008.

I'd predict about 2010 or so for release. The technology they have is really interesting (I'm a testing developer for them) but it's not there yet (example: there's no off world stuff, physics are rubbish etc).
