Thanks to the SFX "10 Best Sci-Fi Movies" poll, Mark and Brian < http://www.markandbrian.com>, the L.A. morning radio duo I've been starting my days with for almost 20 years, have taken note of Serenity!

I'd called-in back when the BDM trailer first started running before Batman Begins, to try to spark some interest in them and get the word out to their listeners, but to no avail.

Mark was bugged by the words "From the mind of Joss Whedon" in the trailer, because he had no clue who Joss was.
(I'd been calling in for years to try to get Mark to watch Buffy and/or Angel ('cause he's a horror fan), but the screeners never let me through.
Brian doesn't have a stomach for horror, and won't go to a theatre to see a movie, so I was leaning on Mark.)

Both of 'em like science fiction and westerns, and appreciate clever writing, but they just had no interest in the Whedonverse.

This morning, Mark said, "I have here the '10 Best Science Fiction Films of All Time', according to 3000 readers of SFX Magazine, and you all can guess what they are. None of you are gonna get #1, but I'm gonna have to Netflix it, because they say it's the best, and I believe them!"

Brian and the other two members of the program, Frank & Kelly, guessed the obvious: Star Wars, 2001 & Blade Runner.

Mark said, "Let me just give you #1: Serenity. Now, I'd been so irritated by how the trailer kept saying that this was 'from the mind of Josh Whedon', and I'm like 'Who the hell is Josh Whedon and why should I care what's in his mind?' But I'm definitely going to be Netflixing this now!"

Brian pipes up with, "I think I saw that on cable. It was about some girl with powers, who wanted to be good, she tried to be good, but she had these powers. But, was it better than Star Wars? No. No, it wasn't."

Once again, I tried to call in, and the head screener, Preva, seemed receptive, so she took my name and put me on hold.

After 45 minutes, the line clicked and went dead.

I typed up what I was going to say and faxed it, ATTN: Mark.
Brian handles the faxes, so I doubt if Mark got it.

Oh well, I tried.

You did your best and that's all anyone can ask.
"There are none so blind as those who will not see" and all that. At least Mark is going to watch it. Who knows, he may love it and talk it up on the air!

I just hope that Mark, if he likes Serenity, is going to take the next step and seek out Firefly, like most do.
Much as I love the BDM, I wouldn't want it to be someone's only taste of the Firefly 'verse.
The series was just so wonderful.

I might have to take my Firefly DVDs down to the station and make a donation.

Mark and Brian run "Past Moments" from the previous day starting at 5am.
Today they led off with the whole SFX Poll discussion!

It was quite a bit more detailed and entertaining than the way I wrote it up in my original post.

Dang! I should've recorded it!

Allow me to take a moment to suggest that any Mark & Brian fans (besides me) call 'em @ 800.955.KLOS or fax 'em @ 310.558.5642 anytime between 6-10am PDT M-F and let 'em know what they've been missing (so that I don't feel quite so alone)!
(Might wanna emphasize the importance of watching the series in addition to the BDM.)

These guys are very passionate about stuff that they love, and they can actually articulate what they like about them!

Good voices to have on our side (even if it is a little too late to help at the box office)!

Well, if you're from Maryland, Brian was very entertained by how you started off with, "I wouldn't know you if you were standing in front of me..." but he didn't read past that.

Thanks for making the effort!

Mark's a big fan of Slither, especially Gregg Henry as the mayor.
Last time I faxed, I put a line about Gregg Henry's guest spot as a sheriff in Firefly, and how Nathan, who played the sheriff in Slither, was the main actor in Firefly.

"but I read on an Internet message site (fireflyfans.net) that you were unaware of the movie Serenity & why it is #1.

You two must go buy / borrow a copy of the box set of the series Firefly, the series Serenity is based on. It was cancelled in 2002, and since its demise and rebirth on dvd & the movie Serenity, the series box set has remained a bestseller on amazon.com (This morning it was #20 in tv dvds...5 years after cancellation!) Believe me, you will love this show. see the series before watching Serenity."

And I won't fax again...Maybe he read the fax & will see the series before talking about it on air.

Excellent, Mav! Perfectly worded!

Back about 7 months ago, while Preva was on maternity leave, I was actually able to talk at length with some of the other screeners (Priva's kinda terse), and one, Chris, was an actual Browncoat!
We talked for a good five minutes, and I suggested he circulate his Firefly DVDs around the office there, and he said he would.

I just called to see if he still works there (after I asked if anybody else's been calling in about Serenity: "Oh, yeah. Lots!"), and Preva said he only works on Fridays.
I explained to her (briefly) how Chris is a fan of the series that Serenity was based on, and owns the DVDs.
I also said that while I loved the movie, I loved the series a bit more, and she seemed to respond to that.
She promised to pass it along.

I also listened to Mark and Brian that same morning and when Mark started to read the list, I almost knew what number one was (since Star Wars was #2), and I was right. So, I called in as well and was put on hold for about an hour, until I was cut off. So I emailed them and of course mentioned the Firefly DVD set, and too watch the 14 episodes first before judging Serenity. I just wonder if either of them will even "get it", and not give it a chance to sink in? I found that it got better the more you see it. Anyway, I will have to keep listening to see if they pursue it. Did someone say they may have access to the Firefly set already?

Well, when he said, "You're never gonna guess #1, because I'd barely even heard of it..." I went, "Nawwww! Couldn't be!" When he said "Serenity", I did every step of my Happy Dance short of jumping up & down! (Didn't wanna disturb the tenants downstairs. )

Anybody calling or faxing in might wanna play up Firefly's connections to the other stuff they already love...

Mark loves Slither and the Alien movies.

Brian loves any Sci-Fi that's not gory.

Both of 'em loved Toy Story, as well as Dodgeball and I, Robot, and they're both eager to see "Spamalot".

Their HUGE fans of Westerns!

It's Friday, so Switchboarder Chris, the Browncoat, our "inside man", is s'posed to be mannin' the phones!

If a woman answers (that'll be Preva), ask for Chris.

Also, if you fax, you might wanna say some'n about how there're only 14 episodes in the series (so it's not a huge commitment), and how Fox jacked us by refusing to air the pilot until after the cancellation order, and how they scrambled the order of the 10 episodes that were actually aired (not good for a running storyline).

Ever since Janet's "wardrobe malfunction", the guys have been really bummed about the new FCC restrictions on language (There's a whole lot of their old material that can't be re-aired!), so mention how Joss snuck all that R-rated cursing onto Network TV by having them say it in Chinese!
That'll inspire camaraderie!

He hasn't worked the Mark & Brian shift since last summer!
Preva lied to me! (Either that or she's confused.)

Oh well, at least Billy let me explain myself longer than Preva does, and he seemed genuinely interested, and he said he'd talk to Chris about borrowing the DVDs.

Brian just had everybody try to guess Entertainment Weekly's "Top 10" Sci-Fi Movie & Television Shows.
When Mark asked, "What about that one we were talking about a little while ago. None of us had ever heard of it. 'From the mind of...' Is that on there?" Brian just says, "Hmmm, no."

Turns out it WAS on there, because the list is actually a "Top 25", and "Firefly/Serenity" was #15!

I haven't lived there since '91. Mark and Brian are still at it? wOOt! I have heard them a few times since while there on business, but it still has been a long while. Whoa. Many memories wrapped up around those two. Great times.

Good luck with your quest to get them turned on to Firefly and Serenity. What a thought...Mark and Brian as Browncoats, and Joss' 'verse a subject of "Miniature Theatre". SNORT! (Do they still do that?)

Do they snort? Not that I can recall... Ohhhh, you mean "Miniature Theatre"! They sure do, but not as much as they used to.

There used to be a couple of websites that had MP3 archives of M&B's sketches, but they both went the way of the dodo.

Since that Disneyland event was last Thursday, the phone lines have been refreshingly clear!
I called in on Tuesday (Preva's normal day off), and told Switchboarder Billy that "Nathan Fillion, the Sheriff in SLiTHER, is the lead actor in Waitress."
He wasn't able to put me on air with the guys because of the 6:30 game, but he said I could call back.
When I did, and I started to remind him what I'd been calling about, I couldn't help but mention Firefly, and he suddenly remembered me from the times I've called in before (I'd explained to him last time about the brown coats, so he knows me now as "Browncoat Chris")!

He let me play him a clip I'd put on my little digital voice recorder (the "You've never heard of Reavers?" exchange (I thought it was the shortest thing I could play that'd have the most impact)), and he thought it sounded cool, so he gave me a "valid" email address so I could send more stuff.

I spent several hours writing up a nice, "tidy" summary of what we've been trying to do for Firefly, with links to audio files, YouTube clips & Wikipedia entries, and sent it off.

Called in Wednesday to let him know to look for it, and he said he'd email a reply when he got it.

Called in just now to make sure I got the address right, and he apologized for not checking email the day before, and I thanked him for "being so gracious about this whole thing." He seemed to appreciate that.

Billy's the coolest, and he's gonna be handling the phones for the next few days (Preva's on vacation), so maybe give him a call at 800.955.KLOS just to thank him for putting up with me so well!

I live near LA, so I would be able to get it. And if you could re-post all of the phone numbers, fax numbers and stuff, then it would be nice to have them all in one place. Yesterday, Mark was talking about his weekend visit to Boston to get his son set up with housing for college, and how amazed they both were at the size of the insects ("That fly was about the size of a dime!"), and Brian replied, "It's true, people on the West coast don't know what real bugs are, like in the Mid West and the East coast. They've never seen a firefly..."

I think that's the only time they'll ever say "firefly" on-air.

I've been telling Billy the Screener about the CSTS screenings, the launch to the Space Station, Firefly at the Mission, the Universal HD showings...
