Hey All

As I was watching some KIDS IN THE HALL sketches on YouTube, I remembered in the commentary track for SERENITY Joss's comments on Michael Hitchcock as Dr. Mathias in the opening scenes of the movie. How Joss was a fan of the Christopher Guest movies, and how he likes casting comedic actors in dramatic or villainous roles since, because they can do comedy which is incredibly hard, thus doing something dramatic is really easy.

And I was wondering. If any of us had the power to re-cast Dr. Mathias, or if there were endless SERENITY movies or if the show was still running, what famous comedic actors or sketch comedians or just actors known for being funny would you have liked to have seen in dramatic or scary roles in a Joss show.

For me, if I could re-cast Dr. Mathias, I would have had either Dave Foley or Kevin McDonald play him. I like KIDS IN THE HALL a lot, and the sketches the two shared together is generally known as the best sketches in the series. So wouldn't have minded seeing either of them as Dr. Mathias. Dave especially, since he can do smarmy really well. Plus, it would have been the second movie that he did with Nathan.

So what comedic actor would you like to have seen as Dr. Mathias, or as a dramatic or bad guy role in a Joss show?

How about John Cleese as Mathias? Of course, he's done other dramatic roles... and his comedies are so ruttin' hi-larious it's hard to take him seriously. So, maybe not.

That's one problem with comics these days. They all seem to move on to dramatic roles right away. Think of Tom Hanks, Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, and Dan Ackroyd. There aren't that many pure comedians.

Hmmm... how about Jon Stewart? That way the BDM would get occasional references on The Daily Show, which would bring it to a much wider audience.

That's who came to my mind first, followed closely by Terry Jones.

But...I could see Johnny Depp having fun with it, too.

I always thought that Rob Schneider had the potential to be a serious actor. I'm not always fond of the stuff he does but I think there is the potential there.

I find comics from over here, (in the land of the bowler hat), always seem to do well in serious roles.

I would have some big name star actor, wouldn't really care who, as they would get killed off pretty quickly.

It was a relatively small role, and the name could have maybe pulled in a few more viewers without ruining the movie. Use the cameo in the marketing.

I have seen a Jackie Chan film where he was in it for the last 5 seconds fishing. If his name was not used, I would not have watched that rather poor film.

Overall I did not recognise too many of the actors, so they were the actual characters for me. I liked that.

But sometimes for the greater good... :)
