Wheeeee! Stealth huggles!! Thank you my wonderful Jimi-bear!!

I did miss you over the weekend - I was going to call and if someone other than you answered I was going to put on my 'phone-sex-line' voice and ask for you! bet that would have floored someone!

NB: My phone sex line voice is not something I worked on for a previous career, it was something I did for a voice production project at Drama School that then became my party trick! So keep your minds in the gutter and not any lower please!!

Glad you have your signature back, LA! I was worried I might have deleted it, but it was saved on my computer. If you right click on it and click on 'Save Picture As' you can save the graphic to your own computer. That way you can save it to imageshack again if they move it, or you can add it to a photobucket account.

Sorry, RIMG, it's a hippie thing. I feel a deep need to rescue animals from getting shot, despite all logical, reasonable explanations as to why it should happen. Then I put on my leather pants and go eat a hamburger

Yes, I'm kidding. Sort of.

I've never really worked with totems since I considered it a native American thing, but I collect Tarot cards and other similar decks and came accross a beautiful Druid Animal Oracle set by Stephanie and Pilip Carr-Gomm. The cards are absolutely gorgeous, and there's a great book with loads of references to animals in Celtic myth and legend.

So here's an imponderable - if you had a choice of any animal, just one, to be your totem, daemon, to represent you, whatever, what would it be?

Mine would be the fox. I see a lot of foxes around where I am and I've loved them ever since I was a kid. Not only are they beautiful animals, but I respect their ability to survive in an-ever changing world and adapt to their environment so they're at home in the city and the country. Plus I have on occasion been referred to as a vixen

My sacral totem is a fox!!
One of them. I actually have two. The other is a doe.
To answer your question... the big 'duh' answer would be phoenix. If I couldn't have that, I'd have the closest non-mythological thing; a gold eagle!

But I like my huge totem pole...

And yeah, there's a reason I say I dabble in Shamanism along with everything else. I like melding it all together.

Good Morning, everyone. Wow, you guys have been busy little bees this morning! I've barely had my coffee and there are already 18 posts this morning.

RIMG, I think you and Husband would get along JUST fine. A few years back ( and thank goodness I wasn't around ) Husband took his .44 Super Black Hawk, a few chicken necks, and super tough saltwater line to his Father's pond and hunted a huge snapping turtle that was eating all the bass. Took him about 30 minutes to get the turtle to bite, 10 minutes to haul him in, and about 1/4 of a second to have him meet his maker.

Not so busy a weekend for me, so I'll be around...

More coffee!!!

I wouldn't mind having a chimera for a totem, were I to have one. If we're going with real animals, some sort of great cat, preferrably a tiger.

Not sure if that is supposed to tell you anything about me or not...

MAGDA!!!! *runs up and hugs Magda*

Nope, LA, never had turtle soup. Not a huge fan of seafood anyway, though I fish occasionally.

PR - Going by Pagan stuff my totem really should be a snake, since snakes are a Brighid thing and I was born on St. Bridget's Day, in the Chinese year of the fire snake! Still, the fox is the animal I most feel a connection with. Maybe because I read a series of childrens books about a group of foxes when I was young and impressionable.

If I were going with a massive totem pole like yours I'd include the snake, along with the swan and the magpie. Swans because I'm slightly obsessed with the story of the Children of Lir (another one I read when I was young and impressionable!) and the magpie because even thought they're bullies and thieves and have a very bad rep... I like them! And I see them all the time where I live.

Like I said, not really a totem person, but those would be my choices I know a lot of Pagans that get very snippy about the totem thing, saying that people are just choosing "cool" animals instead of actually working with it. I have a friend whose totem is the frog, and it drives her nuts when every second person says "Oooh! My totem is the wolf!"

That being said, I'm not expecting anyone to work that hard in this thread, even if you are Pagan! Any wolf people about? RIMG, your totem HAS to be the bear!

Oh - but are you watching the British version of "The Office" or the American one? I think they tried to make an American one and I can't imagine it translating - mind you this isn't the first time they have done that!! "Coupling" got the treatment too I think... Though there was a British sit com based on 'Married, With Children' That was much funnier to me - but they didn't try to just copy it completely!! It was called "2.4 Kids" and was quintessentially British in it's humour...

Hi all...... after a night of homework and misery (that being after a birthday party and a fun little study session) i thought to try FFFnet again and it finally worked.... was the site totally down or somesuch? for... several days?

Only have a short span before i go to school and take a calculus test.... Just wanted to say hi to ya all....

And in other news, La Presidenta and I are... well, progressing. We got to the point where it is at least as comfortable to be with each other as others, and we're spending more time together and... yeah's it's weird. But I have no regrets, awkwardness aside. Amazing (and amazingly patient with my crappy morals when doing my homework at said study session last night) woman, that Presidenta.

Off i go.

Ah, I see. The "The Office" that I'm talking about is the American/US/Hollywood (whatever) one.

British humor can be a bit Hit or Miss for me. Much more often "Miss".

Much too much of the (US) "The Office" just reminded me of the stupid office culture that I've had to deal with.

Yeeeeaaah, I don't really think a boar is a 'cool' animal, and that's my throat chakra totem. Quite a few of them surprised and puzzled or even irritated me when they showed themselves. And not a single one of my totems is a wolf.
And I didn't chose these animals. They came at me. Really, some of them felt like they were charging me. Like the boar.
And really, I wouldn't have 'chosen' an Alligator to be my friendship totem. Really. I thought that was totally messed up. Then I saw the cutest little figurine of an alligator and went "Oh look there it is! How cute!!!" so that worked out in the end. Also, my relationship totem is an Ermine. Not really what I would have picked, but there it is.
Working on uploading my totem pics now. I'll do my best to post the full totem pole.

*whew* Okay, got em all sized proper and uploaded. There are a few totems that reside in the same chakra, too. I've got a triple totem in my stomach. And there's also the life domains. Many of these animals, looking over them all, aren't 'cool'. They all fit, though.
Starting with chakras first.

- Crown
- Third eye
- Throat
- Heart
- Solar Plexus
- Stomach 1
- Stomach 2
- Stomach 3
- Sacral 1
- Sacral 2 (the dual fawn and doe is deliberate here; when she first came to me she wasn't grown yet)
- Root

- Relationship (it changes its coat, like any ermine. The white one is more feminine, the brown more masculine)
- Prosperity
- Career
- Learning
- Teaching
- Travel
- Creativity
- Health
- Family
- Friendship
- Spirit

My luck totem is a blue pixie. I haven't been able to find a good picture for that one.

How does one "encourage" a totem to "pick" you? Being not of the paganistic persuasion, I've been reading these totem postings with a little confusion / interest.

Ok...the main reason for this post, and please excuse the most unkarma ( I do believe in that )nasty undertone and the resulting evil laugh that will follow.

I was just reading up on a few local yoga studios, the classes they offer, etc...and I came across the name of an instructor...let's call her "Ms X" Her name is VERY familiar to me.

Her little bio (and picture which confirms identity...) on the site said "She graduated from the University of Maryland, blah blah blah...and she started practicing yoga 5 years ago to help her deal with "the stress of her divorce."

DIVORCE? (Ok, here comes the totally uncalled for part...)

BWAAA HAAA HAAA HAA!!!

I dated a guy all through college - the same guy - and I would have SWORN we would be getting married, up until the moment he told me he was breaking up with me for this woman. They got married a few years after graduation. And now they are divorced.

I need to go rescue the ants on cybersnark's thread to atone for this outbreak of sheer evil. Excuse me.

You don't encourage a totem to pick you. Totems have already picked you, you just don't know what they are yet. That's the best way to put it.

I sat in my room with my eyes closed and asked "What is my heart totem?" and gradually the lounging white tiger appeared to me. She became an image in my mind, and I am not usually a visual person. I don't 'see' memories and I don't think in pictures, but there she was. Part of the reason I looked for pictures was so I could easily look at any of them, since they first appeared to me as images rather than sound. They still appear as images when I focus on one. I've tried to get as close to how they appeared to me in the pictures. Wasn't always possible, but I did my best.
But I didn't sit there and say "I want a white tiger totem! C'mere white tiger!" I guess that's my point. She just came to me. They all did; I just asked.

Do people who do not follow the path still have totems that are linked to them, they just don't know/acknowledge the, ??

I believe so, yes. Everyone I've talked to about it has found totems. Sometimes I've even talked them through the process. I've met people with blocked chakras who could only find some of their totems, while the others eluded them, even though they knew they were there. I've known people who chased a totem for months and finally had it come out snarling at them, angry because they blocked its energy. I've known people who had totems come to them in dreams, totems they didn't even know existed. A Life totem, to be precise on that instance.
Totems are a symbol; a part of your life that takes shape as an animal. Everyone has these pieces to their lives, and they can take shape as totems. It's just another way of looking at yourself and drawing all the pieces of your Self together. When I 'talk' to my totems, I know that they're a part of me, and it just helps my thoughts to be more clear about things. I like 'em

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Could a totem animal be an animal that reoccurs in your life from time to time? You see/hear instances of this animal as kind of a leit motif as an undercurrent in your daily existance?

Could it be an animal you seem drawn to as well? Or is it more how you said, meditating on it?

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Sometimes an animal that you're drawn to will end up being a totem, but not always. I was always drawn to lynxes, and have no lynx totem. But I was also always drawn to dolphins. I was surprised at where the dolphin showed up, but there it was.
An animal being in your life, though, is a likely totem. I remember magda telling me about being bitten by a wombat and going on to collect them. That's a sign to me that her totem 'marked' her, so to speak. Sometimes a totem that's tired of being ignored will, in fact, attack you. Only way to be sure, though, is to meditate on it. Especially finding out just where in your life that totem is placed.

*edit* You okay, Jimi?

Several of mine are male. Several others are female, some have no gender, and the Ermine is, for lack of a better term, a hermaphrodite. When its coat is white, it's female, when it's brown it's male. Most often she is white and female. Kinda depends on which way I'm swinging at the moment. That makes sense, but not all of the genders make as much sense.

(P.S. it's ridiculous how many times I had to try to post this)

Let him go. It'll get the place out of his system (it did for me, anyway), and when he gets older, you can add that to the list of things you've done for him. ("Don't say I never do anything for you - I took you to Chuck E. Cheese's for your sixth birthday!" If that's not love, I don't know what is. )
