TheOneTrueBix,

I wonder is there a remote possibility that they might gauge the cost effectiveness of releasing a direct to DVD movie though?

I don't know what they have in mind either, but I find it very hard to not allow my heart to hope.

I plan to be realistic and not hope needlessly, but a bit of watching past the sales of the Special Edition is warranted I'd believe. Especially with the interest in the SG-1 direct to DVD movies and Babylon 5 movies. I'm just sayin'.

I'd be interested in your opinion. I respect your judgement.

Okay, gang, I propose a world-wide Shindig to celebrate. Mass purchase on the release date, mass viewings/sleepovers with gobs of Ng Kai Pei involved, p'raps we make it the Second Annual Serenity Day? Game on!

Hmmmm, you know that Landmark theaters also sell DVDs. Maybe Landmark would be willing to screen Serenity and sell the DVD to the people attending. Hmmm, maybe a day early.

Hi all, I'm just learning about Firefly & know what having a great sfi show cancelled in it's infancy sucks.
Two that caused me grief were Farscape & Babylon 5
does Firefly & Serenity stand up to them?
So is it worth my money to pick up the DVD's

We're all slightly biased here, Moya, but I'd say "Yes"

Ideally, though, I'd recommend that you see Firefly before seeing/buying the film. Check with your local library or Video Store and see if they have it. If you have NetFlix, you can go that route. I think you'll love it, and it'll help you appreciate the Movie more.

Welcome to the 'verse!

Anyway I have a few things to say other than, "Yay."

I too will be buying at least one of these (if not several, as I did with the series and the initial BDM DVD).

...But all this begs the question: Why is there going to be a sequel to The Fantastic Four, and yet no sequel to Serenity? W...T...F!

Disbelievingly,

zoid

P.S.
The fact that F4 is getting sequelized, while SereniFly moulders, is elegant proof that there must be a God...Because there sure as hell ain't no such thing as Evolution! People get stupider each and every year. The studios, the press, the moviegoing public...all dumber'n a bag o' hammers.

Very simple... because The Fantastic Four had good DVD sales. The Special Edition of Serenity is a very good step in the direction of getting Serenity II

Is it really that simple?

Serenity has been near the top of DVD sales since it was released. Furthermore, due to such good sales, its release on pay cable was delayed by nearly two months from its original schedule, and its airing on basic cable has been delayed by almost six months by (I presume) its success on HBO/Cinemax, etc.

Fantastic Four was a craptacular. But, I suspect its studio paid dearly for its rights and (again, presumably) a multi-movie deal for Jessica Alba.

...It's kinda like Donald Trump. The F4 movie is so over-capitalized the studio dare not pull the plug, for fear of collapsing the world economy.

Perhaps SereniFly's greatest weakness is that it's cheap enough to ignore. In the words of Thomas Paine, "What we obtain too cheaply, we esteem too lightly."

zoid

While F4, in my opinion, was kinda lame and Serenity was, let's face it, the best thing ever, F4 made over 150 million dollars in the U.S and...well...Serenity didn't. That's why it is getting a sequel.

Sad but true.

I have nothing against other movies having sequels, but when I see Cinderella III: A Twist in Time, Goal! 2: Living the Dream..., Walking Tall 2, Highlander: Vengeance, The Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning, Decoys 2: Alien Seduction, The Hills Have Eyes II, Mr. Bean's Holiday, Recon 2022: The Mezzo Incident, Are We Done Yet?, Spider-Man 3, 28 Weeks Later..., Shrek the Third, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, BloodRayne II: Deliverance, Hostel: Part II, Ocean's Thirteen, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Judges 2, Live Free or Die Hard, The Bourne Ultimatum, Rush Hour 3, High School Musical 2: Sing It All or Nothing!, Resident Evil: Extinction, Highlander: The Source, Saw IV, The Punisher 2, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, An untitled Friday the 13th Sequel, November Son, Species IV, The Book of Mormon Movie, Volume II: Zarahemla, Old School Dos, Raptor Island 2: Raptor Planet, Bats: Human Harvest, Return to Sleepaway Camp, Johnson Family Vacation 2, Pretty Cool 2, Mortal Kombat: Devastation, "The Sarah Connor Chronicles", and Walking Tall 3 coming out (or having come out) this year and, John Rambo, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, The fourth installment of the Indiana Jones Adventures, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, Angels & Demons, Harold & Kumar 2, Deathrace 3000, Terminator 4, The Brazilian Job, Sin City 2, Boogeyman 2, Jurassic Park IV, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, Sin City 3, House of Re-Animator, Super Troopers 2, Ju-on: The Grudge 3, Kung Pow 2: Tongue of Fury, Alone in the Dark II and Shrek 4 being planed I get pissed off that we don't have one.

Nothing against these things as a whole, some of the sequels are well deserved, I just ... get pissed off. On a related note, I've lost my ability to elaborate.

I'm feelin' ya bruther...

But Gor did make a valid point: F4 raked in $150 million. Even though I find it very hard to believe, considering that the word of mouth was absolutely horrendous and it was out of theaters in my pop. 300,000 burg within a month.

Isn't accounting wonderful? Still, a 150 mill credit is nothing to sneeze at, even if it took several 'educated pencils' to get there. I wonder how much it cost to produce (couldn't have been much more than Serenity's $50M, from the looks of its production and SFX quality), and to advertise (okay, they got the full-court press, complete with fast food and breakfast cereal tie-ins). Does anybody have a (undoubtedly fudged) cost breakdown for F4?

I'm just having a very hard time wrapping my head around F4 being profitable, let alone getting a sequel, based on the inescapable fact that the movie I saw (once it was released on pay cable) was a total turd, and a waste of two hours of my life.

I think the producers of F4 owe me $50 for my time...

Respectfully,

zoid

He's already had a sequel it was House of the Dead 2 even though he's only directing Alone in the Dark 2 not Bloodrayne 2 and didn't direct House of the Dead 2.

Strange how a post about the Serenity SE ends up talking about Uwe Boll. And personally his films are yes bad but not as bad as everybody makes them out to be.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I was curious so I looked up the reported budget for Fantastic Four online & it is reported on several sites as being $100 million. I could not find anywhere whether that figure included marketing and PR. Box Office Mojo shows a total box office take of $154,696,080.00. Not sure what dvd rentals and sales raked in, but it seems it was more than enough for a sequel.

I think our problem here is the fact that Serenity was based on a canceled tv show which some of the public knew. Secondly was the fact that none of our cast are recognizable to the general public. That hurt us. F4 had Jessica Alba which drew the fanboys, Julian McMahon (from Nip/Tuck) for eye candy for the ladies added to the fact that all the Marvel comic fans will turn out for it. That adds up to butts in seats meaning dollars in the pockets of the studio. We just did not have that kind of draw.

Now I am hoping that the special edition dvd for Serenity will put enough money in Universal's pockets that they might greenlight a direct to dvd movie sequel. As much as I would like a big screen sequel I just don't see Universal doing it. They've made no moves and as Joss has said he is not getting any calls about it.

Don't get me wrong people, I'm still holding out hope and I'm not about to give up, but the odds aren't looking good. Odds don't concern me none, but I don't want people getting a lot of false hope based on the release of the SE dvd. No doubt this is more of a search for more money by Universal from a fanbase they know is hungry for anything they will send our way. I'll buy the SE dvd because it has content I haven't seen and I'll do my part to help push it. Just saying I'm not looking for Universal to ride to my rescue on a white horse blowing the cavalry charge.

Apart from the poor advertising for Serenity and that it had nobody well known starring in it I believe that it was cause Serenity came late in the year come on the record for highest amount in a weekend for a film in the month it came out is like 40 million dollars when compared to summer months whech have records like 80 million+.Not coming out in a popular month means film studios are not going to spend loads of money on advertising and I'M afraid advertising makes or brakes a film since it cause the buzz, excitement, the talk in the offices which make the film popular.

Thank's for sayin' Browncoat1. Because like you I'm not giving up, can't do that, never will... but I also want to warn folks about thinking that good sales of the SE DVD might make Uni think about giving us a sequel.

I think our hope right now rests in the possibility of a direct to DVD movie... and I think our chances of that at this point are slim. I don't want folks to feel hopeless about that... just be aware of it. We have to look at what's ahead realistically.

There is a really good discussion on this at the OB with Chris Buchanan. It started off talking about the recent ebay auctions then went into this same subject. I suggest everyone hear reading it because it may clear up a few things. Especially us newbies.

I find Chris being hopeful and informs us that there is no "formula" to get a sequal. He tells us it just takes "love & patience". (of course)

I think everybody who has any knowledge of PHOTOSHOP should start making loads of Banners saying, "Serenity DVD Special Edition out in JULY", then everybody can put them in their signatures on all their forums they belong.

Myspace
Signatures in all your emails

When we've done this we might just make that extra few people buy the DVD which might make Universal notice & consider a sequel
