Bit random but hass any body noticed the connections between Firefly and Red Dwarf, im talking the BBC version here, although the american version was cancelled really early, but you have a small group on a beaten up old ship doing what they can to keep going, also theres NO ALIENS, (Gelfs are Genetically Enginered Lifeforms not Aliens) any one else see this? or is it just my poor deranged mind.

I dont suffer from madness, I enjoy it.

*grins* Ah Red dwarf gotta love it. With cracky mpreg, need for Indian food and Ace Rimmer you can't help but love. Luckily got 8 series but alas cancelled after that too-another thing in common.

I hadn't really thought about it, but i must admit to being there now. Darn you are instilling the RD/FF bunnies i swore to ignore! lol *hugs*

Actually I always thought of Red Dwarf having more in common with Quark, the intergalactic garbage scow.

Pretty much. Season 8 finished on a cliffhanger and all plans to end on a new season or movie have fallen through-at least that's what i've seen online and from brief scourings of the web site.

Quark was a short-lived SF comedy created by Buck Henry (co-creator of Get Smart)which starred Richard Benjamin as the Captain Adam Quark of an intergalactic garbage scow which somehow, kept ending up saving the galaxy. Among the ship's crew was Ficus the first mate who was a humanoid plant; Betty 1 & 2 one was a clone but nobody, including the girls, knew which; Andy the neurotic robot (who actually pre-dated Marvin the paranoid Android of HHGttG) and Jean/Gene who kept switching from one sexual gender identity to the other. They reported to Otto Palindrome who in turn answered to The Head.

Hmmm odd, lol. Looks interesting. Ship picture had me turning my head from side to side, it looks like two jumbo jets mushed as mirror images and clones? That really does call for smut.

Thanks for the link. Never seen it, think i'll stick with Red dwarf though *grins* I love the humour.

No surprising you didn't see it. It was on for only 8 episodes but was very amusing. I think it made me pre-disposed to watching RD. I have those on video and will eventually get DVDs, but for now the tapes are holding up.

I too have seen the Red Dwarf. We have a video store near where I live that has an eclectic rental selection on VHS. I've gon through al the seasons except for seven and eight. They also have Black Adder but it's not SF so it doesn't belong here (still recommend it though.) Now that you mention it, Red Dwarf also had their own slang. They didn't use Chinese but words like "smeghead" are hardly common vinicular. Good catch and keep it Flyin.

Ahhh Red Dwarf...good times, good times. I just got into it last year, in fact, and have the first 4 seasons on dvd. It does have a few similarities, but it's hard to compare anything to Red Dwarf too closely because it's pretty unique. I wish it was still on too, and I heard that Craig Charles (Lister) had a bunch of problems after the show. At least our BDHs are doing well. Still - one of the funniest shows on tv.

"Smeghead" certainly came into common parlance in my circle, still does when the bloody cat trips me up and my daughter is in the same room.

Red Dwarf was a great acheivement for the BBC, a Sci-Fi comedy that was FUNNY! It took a while to find it's feet but produced more than it's share of comic gems, Gunmen of the Apocalypse, Sgt Elvis, Duane Dibley and the previously mentioned Ace Rimmer.

And it brought back the lovely Claire Grogan - "I could be happy" indeed.

Unfortunately, as with most long-running series, the last 2 didn't quite reach the same spots as earlier seasons. The VHS of outtakes are great!

More excellent? not sure I'd say they're strictly comparable, i certainly don't watch them for the same reasons. Why not just say they're both excellent instead of reasserting the host show's superiority?

Well, sort of. Rob Grant and Doug Naylor want a film, though backers aren't forth coming. Last I heard was that the BBC may pickup another season, but the hope is for a film.

Actually, I have found some Red Dwarf episodes (chopped in to 3 segments) on YouTube. Just do a search and check it out for yourself.

And yeah..Black Adder rules! If there are any HOUSE fans out there, you really need to see Hugh Lowrey's earlier work as an incompetent inbreed member of the Bristish gentry.

Red Dwarf Is awesome and one of my all time Fave Sci Fi shows. I own all 8 seasons on DVD and go back and watch them often. I would not put them in the same category as Firefly thouhg. Both are very good and very different so I can't compare. But anyone who has not seen it should def. check it out!
