I just have to say that's a piece of fiction from those romance novels. I've heard tell of a few women enjoying themselves, but it all involved a specific kind of saddle and some concerted effort. Really? I'm mildly disappointed to find that out. To me it would explain women's fascination with horses (as I was kicked by a horse as a child I won't go NEAR them) because that would be the only thing that would get me to ride one.

Well shoot. PR, we need to find other sources for your amusement.

EDIT: Actually, msg - I think it is too explicit, as I generally try to stay PG-13. If you are that curious, look him up on photobucket. The .gif is actually on page 1. (Trying this, I actually shivered in yuckiness as I had to look at his pic. Disliking him is an intense feeling!)

Okay, now for the shower of pain. Just had to react to such a fine suggestion

Sorry to burst your bubble. MSG is correct, it's more about bruising and pain. My old trainer used to joke that her OB/GYN thought she was victim of a violent crime.

I think the fascination with horses is a big, pretty animal that is flighty and unpredictable. Horses are the ultimate 'bad-boy-that-needs-taming' fantasy...as well as the adrenaline rush, the "speed" aspect and the technicality of riding correctly.

Edited to say: I agree about Colin Farrel. The package was attractive at one point, but know he just seems disease-ridden, sloppy, drunk and just plain nasty.

Thanks...but no thanks. If I want to walk like a duck, I don't need a horse undern...NEVERMIND!

I've just never understood the draw of horses. I totally get what you are saying...but it just doesn't do it for me.

PR, You could be a Firefighter Supporter. Kind of like an Athletic Supporter, but more NicoCentric.

C'mon. Every man needs a little support now and then!

PR- Seriously I think it'd be a riot! We could do a fire and a cleansing ritual and everything. I bet they'd all flee the building for fear the break room was contaminated by the evil aura of Satan.

Jonny- now now we weren't there and we can't be sure that rumor is true

I wonder if we scared off the guys. Just us girls here, mostly.

This isn't an imponderable, but I was wondering if anyone could help. I'm thinking of changing my major to English, but I'm wondering what kind of versatility you would have with that kind of degree. There's always authourship (is that a word?) and journalism, but I don't see myself in those fields. So is there anyone with an English degree out there?

That would be me, deepgirl. BA in English, 1990 from the University of Maryland.

I can quite honestly tell you (except for managing a bookstore...whoo hoo on the career scale) my degree in Pre-Civil War American Literature comes in handy at 7:30 PM EST every night, when Jeopardy is on. But that's about it.

Unless you are good - and I mean a very good writer, it is hard to make money by writing. I've written many magazine articles and only sold 2 in my whole life. (I write non-fiction)That's about $300.

If I knew then what I know now, I would beg my past self to get a degree in accounting even though I had (then) absolutely no mathematical ability. I would LOVE to have a degree in Forensic Accounting. Now.

I would also have looked into something computer related - something more applicable to getting a job than knowing Hawthorne and Poe.

But then I come back to...would I have the same life I do now? Probably not, and I like my life now. Besides, I would have hated college if I had struggled through Accounting.

But if you studied Oenology you could get a job knowing about Blackthorn and Sloe. (the names twin brothers in an unfinished novel of mine, btw.)

Well I know many people with English majors, but with the exception of the teachers, all of them went on to get degrees in other subjects to get a job ( doctors, lawyers, library sciences, etc.) So if you are looking for a career path major that'll bring in the cashy money...move away from the liberal arts and over to business, computers, etc. If you just want to enjoy and are content teaching, working at B & N, etc then stick to English and have a ball:) Hope that helps sweety

Jonny- this is for you for no apparent reason other than my profound belief that 90% of America does this instead of read

Well, not quite the the response I expected. But I really appreaciate everyone's help. I'm kind of in this funk right now, trying to figure out what exactly I want to do with my life. I was focused on psychology at on point, but it just doesn't seem like the right field for me. So I've been considering English, Music, all sorts of things. Library science is another area that interests me, so maybe I'll have to check that out again. At least then I might find a job with a halfway decent pay scale.

What kind of response were you looking for?

*cornfused*

I think msg & I are both coming from the

a) cashy money side of things
b) following your heart's desire thing

It's difficult to balance, and sometimes...more often than not...cashy money wins. Cause eating and having a roof over your head both rock. You just have to be content in what you do for cashy money. I have a degree in English, have done several diverse things in my life, and am pretty content working in a business office. I think I can speak for msg that she seems to be content teaching - but it wasn't her first choice of a career, not by a long shot.

I would also suggest look into what the up and coming careers are via the Internet. You may find something that will spark a fire.

Good luck, deepgirl. (HUG)

You were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens.

Deepgirl - You could consider studying something else, as well. Being able to communicate is an important skill, so doing something with English wouldn't be bad, but it'd be nice to have business-y skills, too. Double major, anyone?

Besides, the degree you earn in college doesn't dictate what you do for the rest of your life (unless you specialized and wanted it that way) - it's more of a way to say, "Hey, look! I slogged through college, so this work thing will be easy!" It's the assurance for them that you'll be committed (at least, that's how most people tell me it is) and good, an asset to the company.

yingyang has a good point. It may be less about what you study than hey, you went and you graduated.

Time for us East Coasters to run along now. Grocery store, Pick up son, Drop off son, Use mani/pedi gift certificate I got from sister.

Have a great evening, all.

And this is for you, MsG, Champion of the Cause!
(and maybe why DeepGirl shouldn't jump ship yet on the English thing)

Library Science is not what it used to be and we have an excellent program here at the University of Michigan. (This is not a commercial; I would never send my kids here...! Just displaying my cred-is-all.) A good friend of mine went there and...well I don't know what she's doing now, I don't ever hear from her. But that aside, it might be worth checking into if it interests you.

EDIT: Hey Manik2k, you couldn't have come to a better place. Unless you like to argue rather than discuss civilly. In that case you'll need to wander over to the Real World Events section. They eat their young. Well, we do too, but only when absolutely necessary.

I didn't mean to sound negative. I guess I thought there would be options with just an English degree. Just trying to look at all my options. But again, I thank everyone.

And here's a basket-full of hugs from me Mavourneen.

Yeah, I know...

Filthy truth mongers can't let a boy have any fun...

Has the rumor aspect been verified...or is that just what people what to believe? 'Cause sadly, I know of someone who liked to have "fun" with animals, mainly horses and dogs. It was very disturbing to find out. He stood (marketed a horse for breeding) a fairly popular stallion and to find out his extracurricular activites just made the whole situation nasty. There is photgraphic evidence on-line...but thankfully, I never looked at the pictures...you just cannot wash those types of images out of your mind's eye. Blech...double blech...and triple blech.
