First off, I'm new here and really enjoy visiting this place!
I am relatively new to the Firefly 'verse' but am hooked!
I rented the Serenity DVD when it came out at Blockbuster and instantly fell in love with this show, the actors, the characters, and of course the entire 'verse'! I feel very guilty now and I regret terribly not seeing it in the theater now that I know how much was done to bring it to the bigscreen.
Of course, I immediately purchased a copy and I've watched the movie over and over!
Thank you Turner Broadcasting for relisting/showing the Firefly series in High Def!
I have now DVR'd every single episode and have watched them over and over as well.
Watched the original pilot and a few other episodes again just last night.
I purchased the series DVD pack as well but watching the show in High Def is just awesome.
God I so hope we can get the series back on TV or at least a few more feature films!

"You wanna run this ship?!"
"Yes!"
"Well,....you can't."

Welcome!

I'm just curious......

If you're watching Firelfy DVD on a large LCD screen - versus - watching Firefly DVD in HD...how much difference? Is HD DVD that much better than regular DVD?

Hello,
I have to say with a definative 'yes' that the HD broadcast is exponentially better, both in video and sound quality, than the DVD.
I'm watching on a 65" Sony HDTV. My DVD player is a mid range progressive scan Toshiba with compenent video and optic audio connections for the best sound I can get at this time without upgrading to HDMI cables and an HDDVD player.
The HD widescreen broadcast picture is crystal clear with amazing surround sound clarity. The only draw back is fast forwarding through the commercials
I watch the episodes over and over again and its easier than loading the DVDs to tell the truth.
I'll definately be getting the new HD Serenity DVD when I upgrade to an HDDVD player soon.

Wwlcome to our end of the 'Verse!

I smell a potential for great screen grabs. : ) Did anyone tape these episodes in HD?? I'd sure love to get my hands on those.

Number 25,000! Wow, that's awesome. Feel like I kinda won the lottery!
Thanks for the welcome all! Hey, where can I pick up my 'browncoat'?
I am so addicted. Watched another two episodes after work today. Its a great stress relief.
The stories and acting is just top notch all the way around.
Thanks again for the welcome! I'm glad to be here!

DONCOAT

Welcome, SeanCJ!

What, you haven't been 'coated yet? FollowMal is usually pretty quick to find and clothe the new folks around here. She must be busy in Mal's cabin.

Anyhow, I run a little Virtual Browncoat repair shop and can offer you a recycled coat, as long as you're not too fussy about the fit, some sewn-up holes, or a stain or two that I couldn't get rid of.

*hands SeanCJ a previously-loved 'coat*

These are getting harder to come by. For some reason, nobody wants to give back their old coats these days.

Oh, by the way... if UHD follows the same pattern as in past weeks, they should be showing "Bushwhacked" tonight at 8:00PM Eastern Time. As somebody said, I loves me my Firefly in High Def!

P.S. I was going to comment on the "DVD vs. High Def" question that was asked earlier. My experience is a little different from Sean's. I don't see a huge difference between them (visually). The difference is noticably far less than the difference between regular TV and the same program broadcast in high def.

Some reasons why this may be: I have a smaller TV than Sean's (37" vs. 65"). My set may do a better job of upconverting the DVD to the set's resolution. My set may do a poorer job of upconverting regular TV programs, making for a more startling contrast with HD (and of course there's the change in aspect ratio, which is not there when comparing Firefly formats.)

But I think a fundamental difference is that most HDTV content is shot using HD video cameras, whereas Firefly has been converted from film. There are substantial visible differences that result from this, especially regarding film grain and color characteristics. Consider "Out of Gas", for example, where different film stock was used for each of the interwoven timelines, helping the viewer keep them straight. The differences among the "look and feel" of the timelines in that episode are comparable to the difference between direct-to-HD and HD-converted-from-film.

In short, while Firefly in HD is superior to Firefly on DVD, it doesn't give me the same "oh wow" reaction I get when comparing regular TV with HD.

Yet, after all that, if Firefly came out in HD-DVD format I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
