In which:

The crew went to Beaumonde and meet Fanty and Mingo who gave them a job on the Rim moon of Lilac, the crew got smaller even still, Fly is about to leave as Serenity enters Muir's orbit, to join Pain's friend Reggie's crew and the shortage of people posting has brought up the question: Where has the life gone from this thread?

The Training House

Inara was teaching a class to some of Sheydra's young students, which left Sammy to her own devices.

She wandered the vast halls, wrapped in a warm woven shawl against the cold of the coming autumn. Sheydra's voice called to her and she turned, meeting the eye of the Companion with a smile.
"Madame Sheydra? How are you?"

Sheydra smiled gracefully, "Well enough. How are you fairing?"

Sammy shrugged, forehead creasing, "The pain is less every day, but... I don't remember anything. It's like living through a cloud, if I just look hard enough I'll be able to see the other side."

The beautiful Companion smiled tenderly, draped a gentle arm around the other woman's shoulders, "Perhaps this is your chance to reinvent yourself anew. I believe you're allowing what you've forgotten to prevent you from capturing new memories."

The Companion's cool lips touched Sammy's cheek with a tender kiss, "Life is for living, Samantha. You cannot hide here forever."

The bitter thought occurs to her but she holds it back, Inara's hiding here. Why can't I?

The plan had changed. Instead of meeting Reggie in orbit as planned the crew had agreed to meet him on the ground, which is where they were currently at.

"Remember people we got no time for R&R. We're only here to see Fly off." shouted the Captain from the cargo bay.

Turning to Fly, Mal said "You got everything mei mei?"

"Yeah I believe so sir." replied Fly as she hoisted one of her shoulder bags over her shoulder.

On the cargo bay floor sat about six large duffle bags. Most contained weapons, both belonging to Fly and Pain while the others contained clothes.

Mal simply stood by and watched as Guy, Jayne, and Zoe helped Fly take her things over to Reggie's freighter a short ways ahead.

"Family's gettin' too short." Mal said to himself.

Jayne intentionally bumped hard into Fly as he dropped two of her bags onto the cargo deck of Reggie's ship.

When she whirled on him, he blocked the swing with a half-snarl/half-grin, "You ain't comin' back anytime soon..."

Fly stopped and dropped her arm, meeting the eye of the big merc, knowing neither of them were going to say what they meant; that he wished she weren't leaving, and she wished she was staying, "Not as long as you're here."

"I'm keepin' your stash of mead." The merc countered, and they held each others gaze for a long moment before Jayne turned around and headed back onto Serenity.

Zoe just shook her head, "You come home soon."

Fly stood in the cargo bay doors and watched them go.

"Heya, Fly! We's gotsome flyeeen to do! You raedy?"

Reggie was standing there, a broad grin on his face and she felt her heart lift a little. "Yeah, Reg. Let's do this."

But as the cargo bay doors closed she looked back at Serenity, at the departing backs of her friends, of her family. She'd be back, as soon as the time was right. Right now, Reggie needed her. And she needed to be needed.

"They always go. They don't always come back." River whispered to no one in particular, her face tilted against the cool fiberglass of the crate she was lying on.

"Yeah, well, that's the way of things." Mal answered her as he pressed the button to close the airlock doors. "Wash? Get us in the air. We've got our own work to do."

"You got it sir. So where are we going this time? Can we go somewhere with a beach or maybe a duck pond?" came Wash's voice from the ship's comm.

"Wash you know where we're goin' and you know how I feel about ducks and sand. So the answer to your last two questions is no." came Mal's response.

Wash clicked off the comm and sighed "I never get to go anywhere fun."

The pilot fiddled with the buttons, dials, and controls in front of him and Serenity blasted off from the ground and headed off into the Black for Lilac.

Clicking on the comm Wash announced "We'll be landing at our destintation on Lilac in two days. Please keep all hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times. Today's inflight vid is titled 'The Grumpy Man in the Brownish Colored Coat'."

OH NO! Mal doesn't like ducks????? ;)

"Honey, you are just askin' for trouble." Zoe dropped a hand on her husbands shoulder, but her grin plainly said how she really felt.

"Well, I figure it finds us whether we ask for it or not. Might as well send it an invitation." Wash answered as the ship lifted through atmo.

In the Galley, Kaylee started dinner, trying not to think on those who were leaving, or how unhappy it made her. "Wolf? Hand me them sweet potatoes, would ya? I'll fix us up something hot and tasty and we'll all be able to get a good nights sleep tonight."

Apparently not.

Location: Inside the Records Room of a secret Alliance facility on Osiris. Time: 2 weeks ago.

The room was long and bare except for the walls lined with drawers all full of holo-records, a computer console, and a recorder. The man standing in the room was watching a recording of River Tam's escape from the facility.

"Stop. Backtrack. Stop." said the Operative to the computer, which complied instantly.

Dr. Mathias stormed into the room, followed by two security agents, and a very nervous intern.

"Excuse me! No one is allowed in the records room without my express permission." shouted an annoyed Mathias to the man.

"Forgive me. I prefer to see the event alone, without bias." replied the Operative.

"I need to see your clearance." asked Mathias as the two agents took places near the man.

"You have the right to insist." said the Operative as he walked over to the console near the wall and placed his hand on the screen.

A few short moments later the computer confirmed the man's identity and said in a female voice "Parliamentary override. Full access."

"Apologies. An Operative of the Parliament will of course have full cooperation." said Mathias. As he looked at the screen he continued "I'm not sure what...I see no listing of rank, or name."

"I have neither. Like this facility, I don't exist. "Let's talk about the Tams." replied the Operative as he faced the Doctor.

"I assume you've scanned the logs." said Mathias.

"River was your greatest success. A prodigy. A phenomenon. Until her brother walked in and took her from you." replied the Operative in a calm manner.

"It's not quite so simple." retorted the Doctor.

"I'm very aware of that." countered the Operative.

"He came in with full creds. He beat the ap-scan, the retinal...There was no way I could..." explained Mathias.

"No no. Of course. The boy spent his fortune developing the contacts to infiltrate this place." said the Operative.

"Gave up a brilliant future in medicine as well. Turned his back on his whole life. Madness." replied Mathias.

The Operative was taken aback by the Doctor's response and offered his own.

"Madness, no. Something a great deal more dangerous." The Operative walked foward to the still image in front of him and continued "Have you looked at this scan carefully? At his face?"

Mathias looked at the scan uncertainly as the Operative continued "It's love, in point of fact."

"Why are you here?" asked the Doctor a little peeved.

"I'm here because this situation is even less simple than you think. Dou you know what your sin is Doctor?" said the Operative, turning his attention to Mathias.

"I...I would be very careful about what you.." stammered Mathias.

"It's pride." said the Operative as he cut off the Doctor.

To be continued....

Mal doesn't like ducks? thats ..er...quackers

Location: Beaumonde.

"Yep....that went real well." Choo muttered, slowly using a metal pick to undo the handcuffs that attached him to the bed post.

Great...

After handing over the Serenity Dossier to The Syndicate, Choo had proceeded to get absoutly hammered, pissed and then grab a few from one of the hotels...cleaners...so to speak. Who then proceded to drug him and then rob him.

At least the b*tch hadn't taken any of his mercandise or documents, the trader/informant thought, so not a insider then. Besides his cards would have been frozen by now and he had plenty more accounts. Hell, at least she weren't The Bride of a Thousand Men. Would of have been in big trouble then.

"Everytime....every sodding time," Choo muttered, shaking his head. Reaching under the pillow he grabbed another pick from the small case.

Hopefully the others will be having more fun than he was...

John sat in the galley as Kaylee and Wolf made there meal. He never liked them as a couple. There were so many more desirable crew members but he couldn't do anything about it. Continued from my last post.

The Operative walked over to the small control stand near the hologram and pressed a button. The hologram changed to one with the Doctor and Simon in the lab.

"Key members of Parliament have personally observered this subject. I was told their support.." said Dr. Mathias in the recording until the Operative switched the hologram back to the image or River.

"Key members of Parliament. Key. The minds behind every diplomatic, military and covert operation in the galaxy, and you put them in a room with a psyhic." said the Operative to Mathias.

"If there was some...classified information that she..well she never spoke of it. Idon't know what it is." replied a bumbling Mathias.

"Nor do I. And judging my her deteriorating mental state I'd say we're both better off. Secrets are not my concern. Keeping them is." replied the Operative.

"Whatever...secrets she might of accidently gleaned...it's probable she doesn't even know them. That they're buried beneath layers of pyschosis..." replied the nervous Doctor.

"You know in certain civilized cultures, when men failed as entirely as you have, they would throw themselves on their swords." replied the Operative as he moved to his briefcase and opened it.

A fed up Dr. Mathias said "Well unfortunately I forgot to bring a sword to.."

The Doctor's sentence was stopped short when the Operative pulled out a sword from his briefcase.

"I would put that down if I were you." replied Mathias.

The Operative faced the Doctor, his sword in his right hand, hilt facing Mathias and asked "Would you be killed in your sleep like an ailing pet?"

Mathias motioned for the security agents to move in on the Operative, but he was too quick for them. The first agent's throat was slashed before he could go for his gun and as the second had put a hand on his, the Operative stabbed him through the arm and through his chest. As the agent dies, he reflexively squeezes the trigger of his gun and shoots himself in the arm.

The Operative pulled his sword out of the man, whose body then fell silently to the floor. Mathias runs out of the room scared and almost trips on a dead agent's foot. He is almost halfway through the hallway when the Operative sidelines him to a wall and jabs the Doctor in the side with a bunched up fist, paralyzing the man.

The Operative then goes down on one knee, holding his sword out, hilt to the floor. Dr. Mathias looks at the sword in horror as his immobile body starts to lean forward.

Turning his attention to the frightened intern in near the hallway's enterance, the Operative says "Young miss, I'll need all the logs on behavioral modification triggers. We'll have to reach out to River Tam, and help her to come back to us. No matter how far out Simon has taken her, we can..."

The Operative is almost startled when Dr. Mathias drops onto the sword.

"This is a good death. There's no shame in this, in a man's death. A man who's donbe fine works. We're making a better world. All of them, better worlds." say the Operative as Mathias takes his last breaths.

As the Doctor finally dies, the Operative rolls the man over and removes his sword.

Turning his back to the intern and wiping of his sword with a cloth, the Operative says "Young miss I'll need you to go to work now. I think I may have a long way to travel."

The intern leaves, albeit a litte scared. The Operative then walks back towards the holographic image of River and says "Where are you hiding, little girl?"

*supah-bum, supah-bump, it's supah-BUMPAY!*

I've got to stop all this. The mock-honor, the killing, all of it. What was it I said, so long ago? Back when Jack was still alive? 'I am a blade of silver, I am a sickle of ice.' That's the sort of sh*t I'm talking about, that warrior sh*t I've been trying to go by since I got to you guys.

Jack wasn't the first person I've killed, although he was the only person I killed twice. Years ago, I murdered someone with nothing in my eyes or mind. That was when it all went downhill, I suppose. I won't bore you with the ins-and-outs of it, but the whole crazy-train really got started when I died for the first time (how many people get to say that, I wonder?). The voices aren't stopping, no matter what I do. Retreating does nothing, talking does nothing, even dying does nothing. If you're reading this, you'll know that I've already come and gone, like so much trash hitched up underneath your hull.

I guess what I'm getting at here (yeah, there's a point) is that we can run from everything but ourselves. Just look at the Shepherd, for Christ's sake. I know myself now, and that's what frightens me. If anyone finds this (and I think you will) , then it'll be a sort of clue to why I'm gone, although you'll be able to figure it out yourself.

I know myself now, and it horrifies me.

Yours forever,

~ Joseph ‘13’ D’Allaird, Rebel And Deviant

(P.S: Don't bother finding out what I'm really for. I'd want that to stay buried.)

(P.P.S: If you've bothered to read this far (that means you, Pain!) then make sure to tell Fly that I'm mostly sorry.)

Location: Ito's Bar & Lo Mein House - Persephone

Fruity Oaty Bars make a man out of a mouse! Fruity Oaty Bars make you bust out of your blouse! Eat them all the time! Let them blow your mi..

"I'm gettin' sick of that ruttin' commercial." replied the short, sticky old man behind the counter as he switched the channel on the vidscreen.

Yeah I know what you mean Ito. Every ruttin' time my daughter hears that commercial, she wants me to buy her some. It's freakin' ridiculous if'n you ask me." replied Pain. Finishing his beer he continued "Another glass of your house stout my good man."

"Comin' right up." replied Ito as he turned around and grabbed another bottle from the cooler.

"That daughter of yours' is somethin' special Pain. Is her mother around by any chance?" asked Ito as he handed Pain the bottle of beer.

After taking a swig Pain shook his head and said "I'm afraid not, but I do ihave a girl who I hope wouldn't mind takin' that position." Pulling out his wallet, he pulled out a picture of him and Ertia and handed it to Ito. Pain then continued "That's my baobei Ito. Not a day goes by that I don't think of her. Someday I'll be with her again."

Ito looked at the picture in his hand. It was taken in Serenity's cargo bay by the ships' mechanic. It showed Ertia with her arms around Pain's waist and his arm aroud her shoulder. Both of them were smiling at the camera.

"She's a nice girl Pain, pretty too. I wish you two the best." replied Ito as he handed Pain the picture back.

"Thanks Ito that means a lot." replied Pain, putting the picture back in his wallet and his wallet back into his pocket.

Pain took another swig of beer and turned his attention back to the dog race on the vidscreen. He was too busy watching the action to see a familiar businessman and his hired guns walk into the bar and saddle up to Pain. Ito noticed however and cowered behind the counter.

Pain was about to take a sip of his beer when he stopped midway. He saw the lack of the barkeep/owner in front of him and peered over the counter. Sure enough there was Ito hiding behind the counter.

"Awful smart thing 'e did, 'idin'." came Badger's voice from beside Pain.

"Badger whatever brings you here." said Pain sarcastically as Badger sat down next to him.

"Thought we might talk a lil' business Pain." replied a grinning Badger.

After taking another swig from his bottle, Pain said "Really? 'Cause I was thinkin' of aqauintin' your face with the bar."

"Are you threatenin' me Pain?" asked Badger somewhat angry.

Pain felt the barrel of a gun press against his back and chuckled.

"Silly Badger threats are for kids and amateurs." replied Pain still chuckling. Then Pain stopped chuckling and continued "I don't make threats, I make promises."

"I'm startin' to dislike your attitude Pain." replied a pissed off Badger.

"And I dislike you pesterin' me Badger. So why don't you and your goons leave." replied Pain, casually taking another sip of beer.

"You're startin' to get on me nerves PAin. I'm seriously thinkin' of lettin' me men shoot you 'ere an' now." came Badger's reply.

Pain could feel an additional gun barrel on his back and said while he quietly reached for something in his coat "I'm sure you are Badger, but if'n you do that you won't be leavin' this bar alive."

"An' just 'ow're you goin' to do that Pain? By magic?" asked Badger, his goons laughing at what their boss said.

Pain laughed too, then put his closed hand on the counter, and said "Nope no magic Badger, just your run-of-the-mill grenade."

Pain then removed his hand from the active grenade now sitting on the countertop.

"You're one crazy kuang je de 'un dan Pain. You know that?" replied a bug-eyed Badger as he looked at the grenade.

"We're all a little bit crazy Badger and if you're still here by the time the last bar on that grenade goes out, then we'll all be a bunch of dead, crazy hun dans." replied Pain still not looking at Badger.

NICODEMUS

Despite the fact that he could of gotten off at the first moon they arrived at after picking him up (Beaumont, Beaumonde, whatever it had been, he hadn't being paying attention really), Nico kept finding excuses to stay onboard the ship.

He spent most of his days helping the other performing whatever chores they had to do (cleaning, re/assembling weaponry, tinkering with the engine, cooking, darning clothes and so forth). Whenever his help wasn't required / wanted, he stuck to his cabin, mulling over where his life had taken him thus far, and if he really wanted to try and resume it.

Over time, he began to understand the different crew members a bit better and tried to amuse himself during the long hours of nothingness by imaging various situations they might end up in (no matter how unlikely) and the ways the crew would react.

OoC: so to sum up, Nico's been in the background since he joined and has a somewhat expanded skill-set, although he's not an expert at anything, just working his way towards being a jack-of-all-trades. I'll try to post more often from now on.

A beep sounded and one of the bars on the grenades timer went out.

"Four bars left Badger. Better get goin'." replied Pain, finishing his beer.

Pain felt the barrels of the guns leave his back and heard the gunmen back away as the grenade beeped again.

"Three bars Badger. Best make peace with whatever deity you pray to." said Pain looking at the empty beer bottle.

"You 'aven't seen the last of me Pain! shouted Badger as he motioned for his men to leave. Badger and his men hastily made their way out of the establishment.

"That's somethin' we can both agree on Badger." replied Pain as he watched Badger and his men leave. Still looking at his empty beer bottle Pain said "Ito my good man, get me another beer."

Another beep sounded from the grenade and Pain just looked at it contently. A short moment later the last bar on the grenade went out and everyone including Ito waited for the explosion. That explosion never came and Ito slowly rose from his hiding spot.

"You realize you just made an enemy today Pain." replied Ito as he grabbed another bottle of beer and handed it to Pain.

"Yeah I know, but it was fun messin' with him." came Pain's response as he took a sip of beer and everyone returned to watching the game on the vidscreen.

Tucking the note into his jacket pocket, 13 let out a deep, human sigh. Leaving, coming, going...would he ever finally stay somewhere where he could make a place.

With a few mumbled 'whatevers' to the residents of Haven and a prim nod to the girl Dinah, 13 boarded the one-manner, a gift from Calisto. What a nice lady.

'Okay...just do it like Wolf toldja,' 13 thought. 'Go easy, try not to twitch the yoke.'

With a rumble and a triumphant grin, 13 lifted off of Haven, staring down at the planet. Haven? Not for him.

'Oh well,' he thought, Serenity's NavSat burned into his brain, 'At least I'll see Fly. That'll be nice, unless she shoots me again.'

...and thus the primary buffer panel flew of into the atmosphere of lilac like a leaf on the wind (with less soaring, and more hard impact at 300 mph into the ground)

"... what was that?" asked Mal, slightly concerned for the safety and well being of his ship.

"Whoa did you see that?" replied Wash as Serenity bucked again.

"Was that the primary buffer panel?" asked Mal, a little angry that a piece of his dear ship just flew off.

"Looks like." replied Wash as he handled Serenity's controls.

"I thought Kaylee checked our entry couplings! I have a very clear memory of it!" shouted Mal.

"Yeah well if she doesn't give us some extra flow from the engine room to offfset the burnthrough, this landing is gonna get a little interesting." replied Wash as he fought the controls.

Mal turned to Wash and asked "Define "interesting"."

"Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die?" replied Wash in a calm manner.

Mal walked over to the comm and opened the shipwide channel.

"This is the Captain speakin'. Due to a little problem with our enrty sequence, we may experience slight turbulence and then explode." said Mal into the comm.

As Mal prepared to leave the bridge he said to Wash "Can you shave the vector?"

"I'm doing it, it's not enough." replied Wash. HE then hit the comm and said "Kaylee!"

"Well just get us on the ground." replied a frustrated Mal as he leaves the bridge.

"That part'll happen, pretty definitely." replied Wash.

Jayne climbed out of his bunk, carrying enough weapons to outfit a small army. Seeing Mal, Jayne said "We're gonna explode? I don't wanna explode."

"Jayne, how many weapons you plan on bringin'? You only got the two arms." asked Mal as he looked at Jayne.

"I just get excitable as to choice, like to have my options open." came Jayne's reply.

"I don't plan on any shootin' takin' place durin' this job." replied Mal.

"Well what you plan on and what goes down, ain't ever exactly been similiar." shot Jayne.

Mal eyed the grenades that Jayne was carrying and said "No grenades."

Jayne groaned and Mal repeated "No grenades."

Zoe enters the front hall just as Mal makes his way for the engine room.

"Are we crashin' again?" asked Zoe.

"Talk to your husband. Is the mule prepped?" replied Mal.

"Good to go sir. Just loadin' her up." replied Zoe.

As Mal makes his way to Kaylee's domain, Zoe spots Jayne.

"Are those grenades?" Zoe asks Jayne.

"Cap'n don't want 'em." replied Jayne in typical Jayne fashion.

"Jayne we're robbin' the place. We're not occupyin' it." replied Zoe, who headed for the bridge.

OATH

"...lee? What in the sphincter of hell..." The captain's voice trailed off as I walked past the engine room, making my way into the cargo bay, leaning against the catwalk railing.

Well. If not at all smooth, we'd certainly hit the ground at one point.

"Have to go for awhile." The timid yet forward tone of voice only River could manage creeped up from roughly three feet to my left. Looking for her, I let out a high 'GAH!' when I noticed her spread out on the catwalk.

"Isn't that...uncomfortable?" I asked. "There are beds..."

She shook her head. "Prisons. Strap you down, cut you inside."

I winced at that. I'd gotten the story about her in little tidbits from the crew, and after the slow rage I felt so much...pity? Is that the right word?

"Never mind that," I said. Fantastic advice, Mr. Niccolo. "Why are you up here alone?" And an even more fantastic question.

She smiled. "Waiting. Thirty and twenty, then you'll see."

"Of course," I said, leaning against the rail in silence.

Roughly a minute later, I heard the clink of shoes on the grated catwalk.

"River?" Simon, soothing to his sister, yet still infuriating to me.

"I know," she said, not moving from her position. "I'm going for a ride."

John climbed slowly into Inara's shuttle he didn't know why he had come here he just wanted. He knew when his vision about Book happened he'd be near her. Book was a strange man, a shepard even after his dark past. They had met before a secret neither of them would tell. Book came out of it with a friend. Book had set John on a path to rightiousness. Did John do the same for Book? He felt a bump as the ship touched down.

He walked into the Cargo bay. "Do you understand your part in all this" He heard the captain say" "Do you" A monumental event was about to occur it started here. The Captian, River they would be major players. Would John? Should he stick around for the pain he felt coming. Yes for Kaylee, and for The rest of the crew they will need a shoulder.

OATH

"Wait, she's going with you!?" I shouted at Reynolds as he climbed aboard the hover mule with an irritated look on his face.

"How many people do I have to explain myself to? She's got skills rest of us don't, Oath, that might come in handy if we get into a situation."

Seething for a few moments, I spoke up just as Mal threw the hover mule into drive with a lurching hum.

"I'll accompany you, then."

"What?" Jayne grunted. "We ain't got a need fer a Core-born sissy!"

Reynolds shot Jayne a look, and turned towards me. "Jayne ain't wrong. 'Sides, mule won't run with five."

"Uh, Cap?" the engineer asked timidly. "Actually, it'll run just as easy with five as it will with four. Jack's ol' mule wouldn't've, but this shiny new one..."

Mal gritted his teeth, trying to ignore my expectant glare.

"Fine," he growled. "Get your ass on, and hold tight."

The hum smoothing out, we left the cargo bay in the care of smiling Kaylee, frowning Simon, and the others, as Mal grumbled, "Why do you wanna go with us anyway?"

Not being able to answer that question, I simply tried to enjoy the ride as much as I could.

"So, what's the plan, Captain?" I asked. "If I'm going to help, I should have a...worker's insight."

"There's a little bank in town," he explained, "That holds the local defense contractor's pay. We go in there, and we take it with as little fuss as possible."

"That's why we're goin' in on a Sunday," Zoe added. "Won't be any crowds."

I nodded, a little annoyed that they'd be so ready to bring River into an operation like this, but I suppose they'd been through much worse on their adventures. The gunfights, the dogfights, and that business I'd heard about on Londinium...Yes, they'd been through worse than this.

Parking in front of what must have been the bank, Jayne stood up conspicuously, unzipping his jacket to display a repeater.

"Shiny. Let's be bad guys."

We crashed into the bank, Zoe first, Mal barking orders to the patrons. With efficent movements, Zoe blew out the security cam while Jayne performed what looked like a Tombstone on a security officer. I shucked my mouseguns out of my sleeve holsters, sweeping the area cautiously.

Last came River, stepping carefully into the bank. I chuckled as I saw she was barefoot, and came this close to chiding her about it. Why, she might step on a gun or broken glass, or something.

She seemed to consider the place for a moment, before pointing at a rough-bearded, curly haired man. Zoe put her gun to the side of his head, and her vice was the only sound in the building.

"Know what the definition of a hero is?" she asked, the gun still pointed at his head. "Someone who gets other people killed."

The man threw a gun, and resumed the stay-on-the-ground position.

"Big happy family?" Mal said dryly.

BUMPILICIOUS!!!

Mal moved toward the Trade Agent and hauled him over to the wall safe, as Zoe and Jayne followed.

The Trade Agent said "This is just a crop moon, don't think you'll find what you..."

Mal cut the man off and said "Bi zui rong wo men fa cai! (Shut up and make us wealthy!)"

The old man moved towards the wall safe and punched in its combination. Zoe and Jayne stood behind Mal as the old man opens the safe and gets out of the way.

"At last we can retire and give up this life of crime." replied Zoe sarcastically, as she saw the small amount of bills and scattered coins in the safe.

Mal gives her his "Don't you have faith in me" look and reaches into the safe. He pulls on the hidden lever at the top and a passage way opens up near Jayne.

"Hey!" shouted Jayne as he was caught off guard by the sound of a part of the floor sliding away.

"Y'all are Browncoats eh? Fought for independence? Petty thievin' ain't exactly soldier's work." replied the Trade Agent.

War's long done old man. WE're all just folk now." came Mal's reply. He then shouted into the passageway to the vault "Listen up! We're comin' down to empty that vault!"

"You have to give me your authorization password!" shouted the guard from below.

Jayne sneered and fired off a burst from his submachine gun down the stairs.

"Okay!" shouted the guard as the gunfire stopped.

Mal then motioned for Zoe to follow him into the vault, as Jayne stood guard.

"She'll be back when she gets back" he called after look 50 he'd been counting.

"Next your going to tell me these jobs are safe." John began to climb down the stairs and stopped midway. "I won't lie to ya. I've been on many a job with this crew, and many on my own. I've been shot at 679 times 14 times a bullet hit. I've been stabbed beaten broken just about every bone in my body and even been totured for hours at th ehand of an elderly Russian man. But, I made it through. River's tough she'll survive. Besides job like this, there is absolutely nothin to..."

John stopped talking suddenly and grabbed his head. He let out a moan, intense pain eminating from his head. He fell down the stairs and began convolsing. Simon rushed toward him and tried to calm him. "John what's wrong"

Somewhere outside the Trading Station a little boy turned to his mother and said "That sounded like a repeater."

"It did sumwat sound like gun blast. Perhaps you ought to run and tell a lawman." replied the kid's mother.

As she turned back around a Reaver attacked her. Meanwhile back inside the Trade Station, River had a violent vision and fell to the ground. Jayne saw her and made his way towards her.

"What is it?" asked Jayne as he held both of her shoulders.

River turned her wide eyed gaze to Jayne and said "Reavers."

"The leg is good and it'll bleed plenty." said Mal to the guard inside the vault room as Zoe loaded up the loot.

"I was thinking more of a graze." replied the guard.

"You don't want to look like you just gave up." countered Mal.

Just then Jayne came running in.

"Mal!" shouted Jayne.

"Every heist he's gotta be yellin' my name." muttered Mal. Mal turned to Jayne and asked "What is it?"

"Reavers. The girl's pitchin' a fit about them. They're here or there comin'." replied a frightened Jayne.

Mal turned back to the guard and said "Does that vault lock from the inside?"

"Yes." replied the guard.

"Get everyone inside the buildin' and get them inside the vault." replied Mal.

"Yeah but.." replied the guard but Mal cut him off as he got into the guard's face and shouted "GET THEM INSIDE THE VAULT!"

Reavers. I'd never seen any in my years of travel, so I'd convinced myself they were nothing but stories and exaggeration, even with the crew’s obvious experience with the monsters. Horrified screams from outside the bank and shrieks of pure fury convinced me that the truth was much worse than the fiction.

“You see ‘em? Anybody see ‘em?” Jayne shouted with anxious fear, his head darting around.

About thirty yards from us, a trio of torn, snarling ‘men’, clad in makeshift armor saw us and began running towards us with jagged weapons raised. I put a bullet in one’s head, stunned to see it continue for several steps before collapsing. The other two Zoe and Jayne brought down while Mal ushered River onto the hover-mule.

Death was abound, Reaver’s flying from their ominous, black ships, tearing into the town like a summer blaze. Blood spilled into the street, as man, woman, and child were all killed alike. I shot down four more before Zoe shouted for me as she started the mule up. I hopped on, keeping my guns drawn.

The man Zoe had educated in the bank ran towards us, screaming, “Take me with you! I can’t stay here, please!”

“You’re too many!” Mal shouted as the man struggled to get onto the mule. With a shove, Mal re-introduced the man to the dirt, where Reavers hungrily snatched him up. Taking careful aim, Mal shot him in the chest, causing the Reavers to drop the fresh corpse with disinterest.

The hover mule raced forward, past a building with a yellow awning, smashing into some cages that had chickens in them. A few short moments later a group of Reavers followed in a menacing skiff.

"Faster! Faster would be better!" shouted Mal to Zoe just as the Reaver skiff tapped the hover mule. The skiff was about to ram them again when Jayne shot at it, causing it to back off a ways.

"How come they ain't shootin' us outta the sky?" yelled Jayne as sporadic gunfire erupted from the skiff.

"They want us alive for the up close kill." shouted Mal as both he and Jayne fired at the skiff again.

"They want us alive when they eat us." said River, from her scrunched down position.

OATH

OOC: This is going to be a mite long, with a little variation to the cargo bay scene. (Oath against Mal in this Big Damn Movie, it seems.)

This is it, I thought, as the skiff bore down on us, harpoons and jagged projectiles flying.

I fired bullet after bullet, sliding back into my time as a gunslinger-for-hire on the Rim. A time of muzzle fire and blood-smelling smoke. I’d lived a life of

They’ll take her, I realized with dawning anger. They aren’t just bogeymen; they’re as real as she is. Steeling myself, I reloaded, shot, ignoring the steel stake that rammed into my left shoulder, pushing the pain into the attic of my mind.

“Where are my clips!?” Jayne shouted, replied by an urgent reminder from Captain Reynolds. Reaching for the rear hatch, Jayne’s hand came close to removal from an over-sized shuriken.

In what seemed to be a split-second later, a harpoon had pierced through the mercenary’s leg, a hungry rope leading back to the Reavers. Gripping the bumper of the mule, Jayne shouted with fear as Mal tried to get a steady shot. I almost laughed at his remark, until the Captain severed the rope with a bullet. I still chuckled a bit.

What’s the point? I thought, numb blood running freely from my shoulder, dropping my left gun. They’ll run us down, pick us apart like insects. Only thing you can do is keep River safe for as long as you can.

Serenity, swooping from the skies, a rickety deathtrap angel. With a thought of ‘Deus ex machina,’ the ship swept us from the ground, (resulting in Mal flying from the mule to land with safety) leaving the Reaver’s dark skiff to crash into the underside of the cargo bay entry-way. My head collided solidly with a piece of sharp metal, and dark blood glazed my eye.

Ignoring the thundering pain of both that and my shoulder, I rose shakily to my feet, glad to be rid of that hellblasted mule. My right-gun was still in my hand, still loaded, still ready to kill as I fixed my sights on Mal, striding towards him with anger misting my mind.

“Are you okay?” a stairway-perched Kaylee asked Simon, who’d thankfully opened the cargo bay doors before we’d hit.

“Is he okay?” Mal asked incredulously, a shocked look on his face.

A dark, soul-rattling scream came from the wreckage of the skiff, which had somehow found its way onboard. A black-clad Reaver, face torn beyond humanity, whirled a blade high above its head.

Instinctively, Mal, Zoe, Jayne, and myself poured bullets into the monster, who maintained the ferocious stance for several moments before collapsing, blood dyeing the bay red. Not the first time that Reavers had died here, so I’d heard. Hopefully, it would be the last time.

I ceased the barking orders of the captain with a suckerpunch to Mal’s jaw with my good arm, sending him rocketing to the floor. Alright, maybe not rocketing. He did fall down, though, which sated my anger some.

“How dare you take her into that?” I hissed, trying to inconspicuously soothe my sore knuckles. “How dare you?”

The sight of Mal’s burning eyes did make me back down some, but I maintained my eyes on the slightly taller and heavier man.

“Seems to me that you ain’t in a position of command, passenger,” he hissed. “You done little on this boat but keep quiet and be over-eager,” he sneered, adding, “That is, to most of us ‘cept River.”

I sputtered for a moment, trying to conjure up an explanation.

“You knew she was going into a dangerous situation!” I shouted as the crew watched, remaining silent.

“I ain’t a gorram prophet! She shoulda been safe as houses, not for the Reavers!” His eyes narrowed. “What I’m worried ‘bout is your interest in her. I’ve asked, and now I’m gonna be told: what’s your story?”

"Stop fighting" John said his voice commanding echoing in the expanse of the cargo bay. He walked with an air of confadence anyone who wasn't there could never have known he'd been having a seizure just minutes ago. "There's no purpose just anger. Mal had every right to take River on the job. Simon you have every right to be angry at him. Oath you seemed overly concerned with someone that as far as I know is none of your gorram business but that's for another time. Many of us just had a near deah experiance I understand that but right now what's important is that no one died. If you all wanna bitch at each other do it another time cause this empath has a headache the size of earth that was and is heavily armed."

"We're leaving" Simon said from a corner after John had finished yelling. "Me and River we're gone"

"Fine but I got a hurt crew and until you leave the boat you're still my medic." Mal walked from the room head held high. John looked over and wondered how many locked doors it would take for him to let it droop.

I didn't even know the Super Bowl was on yesterday. As for who would play Pain, I have no clue, cause there aren't that many actors who're 6' 8".

Location: Cargo Bay

Before Mal and Zoe left the cargo bay for the Front Hall, Mal turned and said "Kaylee I want you to scavenge through this scrap for anythin' that might be usable. Jayne I want you, Guy, and Nico to clean up this mess and toss everythin' into the lower hold to space. Dong ma? Everyone else can do whatever."

There was no talking, just a couple of nods and Zoe and Mal left for the Front Hall.

Location: Front Hall

"No I think things'll glide a deal smoother for us without River and Simon onboard, but how long do you think they'll last?" asked Zoe as she and Mal entered the Front Hall.

"Doc made his call. They's as babes in a basket when we took them in. We sheltered 'em plenty. Man has to cut loose, learn to stand on his own." replied Mal as he made his way towards his bunk.

"Like that man in town?" asked Zoe.

"I had to shoot him. What the Reavers woulda done to him before they killed him.." replied Mal, stopping in front of his bunk's hatch.

"I know. That was a piece a' mercy. But before that, him beggin' us to bring him along.." replied Zoe, a hint of sadness in her tone.

We couldn't take the weight. Woulda slowed us down." replied Mal.

"You know that for certain?" asked Zoe.

Mal turned to face Zoe and said "Mule won't run with six. I shoulda dumped the girl? Oath? You? Or Jayne?" Mal considered the last part and sighed "Oh Jayne."

"Coulda tossed the payload." replied Zoe.

"Toss the payload?" Mal asked, his tone rising a bit before continuing "In case you haven't noticed, I have parts fallin' off my ship, I have a crew that hasn't been paid, and oh yeah a powerful need to eat sometime next month!"

Wash chose that time to exit the bridge.

"Sir, I don't disagree on any particular point. It's just...in the time of war, we woulda never left a man stranded." replied Zoe.

"Maybe that's why we lost." came Mal's response just as he opened his bunk's hatch.

Wash and Zoe watched as the Captain entered his room and closed the hatch behind him. Wash then walked over to his wife and wrapped his arms around her waist. Zoe smiled and nestled him.

Location: Cargo Bay

Time has passed and the only ones in the cargo bay are Jayne, Guy, Nico, and Kaylee. However unbeknownst to them, River is laying on the catwalk and listening in to the conversation below.

As Jayne drags the plastic wrapped body of the Reaver over to the lower hold, he says out loud "I do not get it. How's a guy get so wrong?"

Jayne kicks the body into the hold, walks over to a piece of wreckage, and continues "Ain't logical. Cuttin' on his own face, rapin' and murderin' I mean. I'll kill a man in a fair fight or if I think he's gonna start a fair fight, or if he bothers me, or if there's a woman, or I'm gettin' paid. Mostly only when I'm gettin' paid. But these Reavers...last ten years they just show up like the bogeyman from stories. Eatin' people alive? Where does that get fun?"

Jayne dumps the piece of wreckage into the hold as Kaylee fiddles with what looks to be a catalyzer.

"Shepherd Book said they was men that reached the edge of space, saw a vasty nothingness and just went bibbledy over it." replied Kaylee as she gave the part a good once over.

"Hell, I've been to the edge. Just looked like more space." replied Jayne as he kicked a part into the hold. He grimaced after he did so.

"I don't know. People get awful lonely in the Black. Like to get addlepated ourselves, we stay on this boat much longer. Captain'll drive us all off one by one." replied a sad Kaylee as she put down the part.

"Yer just in a whinge cuz that prissy doc is finally disembarkin'. Me I says good riddance. He never belonged here, and his sister's no saner then one of 'em Reavers." replied Jayne.

Kaylee shot Jayne a look and said "That ain't even so! River's a dear friend and a boon to this crew! You just don't like her 'cause she can read your mind and everythin' you think is mean."

Jayne shrugged off Kaylee's look and said "Well there is that."

"Her and Simon could've a place here, now they're leavin' us. Just like Shepherd Book." replied a sad Kaylee. She looked up at Inara's former shuttle and continued "Just like Inara."

"And everyone else too for that matter." chimed Guy who threw in another piece of the wreckage into the lower hold.

FROM: UNKNOWN SOURCE

The tattooed, uncharacteristically cheery face of 13 appears on the screen, smiling brightly.

"Hey, Mal! 13 here, just left Haven a while or so back. I heard that Serenity's going to be making landfall at...Beaumonde.

"Well, short story long, I'll be rendesvouzing with you guys there, if possible." He hesitates, and his peculiar grin spreads wider. "Which is probable. That I will be there, that is." His eyes brightening, he adds: "Oh, and could you tell Fly to wave me when she gets a chance? I'm sure she's swamped on Serenity, but I'd like to...hear...from her." His grin falters for a moment, then returns brighter than ever.

"13 out. See y'all soon, my freaky styleys!"

Switching the Cortex screen off with a pleased sigh, 13 takes the sorrowy, angst-ridden note from his jacket pocket, reading it over four times. With a good-humored 'tut' he neatly rips it into four strips, then promptly eats them.

Keeping one hand firmly on the ship's yoke while the other is plunged into a charging station for a Gayme Buoy, electricity flowing into 13.

"Hey, Mal!" Wash turned in his seat, "Wave for you. Looks like RobotBoy is back around."

"Was he smiling?" Zoe's voice was somewhat less confused sounding than her expression looked. "I didn't now he knew how to do that."

"Some folks think the same of you, Zoe." Mal squinted at the wave as it played back. "Wave him and let him know we'll see him there."

"Sir? Are you out of your mind?" Zoe's voice, calm and respectful, betrayed nothing of the thoughts behinds her words, but Wash quickly echoed them,

"Didn't he..."

Mal's voice cut over Wash's protests. "... He backed us up when we needed it. Sure, we've had problems, but 'case you two didn't notice, we're a little low on crew at the moment. And the boy does have his usefulness."

Mal's tone said end of discussion, and Zoe stared pointedly over his head while Wash suddenly found the console very interesting.

"Wash? Get us to Beaumonde. I want this job over and done with."

FROM: MAL REYNOLDS

Zoe's stern, unsmiling face appears on the Cortex screen, and 13 smiles sunnily.

"Well, that was quick, Mrs. Washburne. What's the scoop, Zo?"

13 could hear her clench her fists as she replied, "Captain says we'll meet with you at Beaumonde."

"SWELL!" 13 screams erratically, then resumes his smile. "I'll see you guys then!"

"He seemed awfully chipper." replied Wash as he punched in the coordinates for Beaumonde. Turning to his wife, Wash continued "Wasn't he chipper dear?"

Zoe gave her husband a look which made Wash promptly say "Ok returning my attention to the console now. Boy these dials are awful dial-y."

OATH

Leaving? How could they leave? What would they do? Where would they go? Beaumonde was far from the best of planets to conceal a pair of highly wanted fugitives, and it wasn't as if River was Miss Inconspicuous!

Leaving? What the hell was wrong with Simon? Didn't he know that the sky was the safest place to hide? Of all the people in the 'verse, I would know. I should tell them.

But I can't. Why not, you ask? Well, my dearest, you might have noticed in this sprawl of journal scrawlings that I'm in a very awkward situation. My daughter (probably, there's a chance she isn't. I'm not taking that chance, anyway. She's my blood, as far as I'm concerned.) cannot ever know that I'm her father.

But then again, why couldn't she? I think of everyone on the ship, she would handle it the best. Despite the family aura I'm getting from Serenity, she still has noone but that thrice-damned Simon, who plugs her with meds constantly. If she had a father, wouldn't that soothe?

Alright, probably wouldn't work out too well, although it would stop the captain's ceaseless questioning. He probably thinks I'm some sort of Alliance agent, a member of the 'secret police.' 'O f course, Mr. Reynolds, that's exactly what I am. Although that means I could've killed all of you and taken her whenever I wished.'

Idiot.

Wash left the bridge just as Wolf took over. He walked through the galley and stopped. It wasn't the same after those who left. He looked over to the corner where the coffee table was. Normally that's where Pain and Ertia could be found making out when they weren't in his bunk. They weren't there of course and hadn't been for quite some time.

"Hey Wash what's with the long face?" asked Guy who was sitting at the table, cleaning a gun.

"Oh it's uh nothing. I was just looking for people to play some hoopball." replied Wash.

"Hell count me in. A game of hoopball sounds better than just sittin' and mopin' about." replied Guy.

Guy finished cleaning his gun and put it away. Then he and Wash went looking for people to play some hoopball.

"We're in." Kaylee said when Wash asked if she and John would like to play.

"Kaylee, you know I suck at hoopball." John protested.

"Ahh don't give a space monkey's rear end we need some fun"

"Fine"

That's quite all right Wolf.

In the Cargo Bay

A game of hoopball was underway. The teams were Wash, Guy, Wolf and Kaylee, against John, Zoe, Nico and Jayne. There wasn't many people watching the game since most of them were gone, but Oath and Mal made an effort to watch the game.

Jayne dodged a block by Guy and passed the ball to Zoe. Zoe maneuvered past Wash as he tried to block her.

"One to nothin'! Y'all ain't givin' up so easy are you?" said Zoe to her husband's team as she scored a point.

"Surrender? Now? I think you got a couple of screws loose my dear." replied Wash as he intercepted a pass from John.

Wash moved quick on his feet and threw the ball to Guy. Guy dodged Jayne and passed the ball to Kaylee, who made a basket after dodging John's attempt to block her.

She turned to John and said, smiling "Come on John is that the best ya got?"

Nico, Guy, and everyone else for that matter. This sure would go quicker if you people were here.
