9 regular characters is too many for an hour long ( well, 44 min.) episode. so Book is off at the Abbey, or Simon and River locked in their cabin, or Inara hard at legitimate work, or something else.

But 9 isn't really enough to operate the ship. Kaylee's the only effective mechanic aboard, tho' Wash helps a little, and Mal can replace a catalyzer if shown how. That's why she's got a hammock in the engine room-- when things get hairy in there, she hasta work from can to can't.

Wash and Mal are the only 2 we ever see pilot. Do they stand watch on, watch off? 24/7? Don't they get tired? There must be some kinda auto pilot- sometimes everybody is playing hoop ball or eating together. But do they turn it on and go to bed at night? Trust it with their lives? From OiS, seems they might, but ya see how well that turned out...

Zoe is mainly ground side talent, tho probably she could pilot, and Jayne, of course... ( How many Jayne's does it take to change a lightbulb? well, one to load Vera, and one to sweep up the pieces, and ...)and as for Jayne navigating... could wake up either parked outside a really cheap whorehouse, or sold to anybody with a couple platinum.

so it seems to me that the crew is at least one, and probably a couple of bodies short of being truly effective.

I think the Auto piolt is a given, and it wouldn't really that that much to run a ship od Sernity's size, it's a smalls hip and once you spoent time on something liek that you get used to mucking in and helping out. what you never see in story's like this is the hour's of work that a charter would have to do in order to keep a heap like Sernity up in space, it alway's cut's to the intresting, sad, violent, joyful, series, moody periode's that apear ina good story.

well that's my take anyway's lol

The Operative: Are you willing to die for your beliefs?
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: I am...
[they draw. Mal fires first, and the Operative is forced to take cover]
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: 'Course, that ain't exactly plan A.
