However, I am really interested in astrophysics, astronomy, particle physics, chaos theory...
but most of what I try to read goes right over my head.

Mavs - good morning Thanks for the e-mail, and (I am sure others have said it) want to re-iterate that your husband is a lucky man.

JQ - I forgot to mention this in the opening post, but I never realized that a) You work for a university, and b) You are a physicist. Excellent on both counts. Physics is my favorite subject after math, all aspects of it.

I was very glad to see that I am not the only one on here who likes math. :)

"Did he just go crazy and fall asleep?"

Hi Everyone! Riv, Peng, Verse, Mav, Kel.

At first glance, if you squint, jπ+1 looks like jimi, which is just plain cool. But that's just my skewed perception.

Now before you get all genuflecty about my status as a physicist at a major university, I'm not. Here are the facts.

1. I am employed by the University of Michigan, true, but in the Registrar's Office where my nominal duty is to ensure the correction tuition is charged to the students.

2. My true function is expert in waiting regarding all matters where the academic rules and regulations of the schools and colleges comprising the university intersect with the computer systems. The Registrar calls me the great and mighty Oz.

3. What I am after you strip away all the pretense with which I surround myself (professionally) is a Super end user who has more knowledge than he can use and just enough knowledge to really fk up an IT's day/week. An adverse side effect of being completely self-trained and even worse: a system tester (Okay see if you can break this. What are you kidding? That's like candy to me!)

I am a physicist only in the same way I am a historian or a psychologist. I am a student of the cosmos. I am a student of civilization. I am a student of the psyche. I live in this world and I mean to know what that means. The world isn't my oyster, it's my petri dish. The fact that the subatomic particles that make up what we consider reality is really only a statistical probability study, that math is truly the foundation of all we know and don't know, pleases me to no end.

My disdain of academic degrees is no excuse for ignorance. In fact, it is what drives me onward to find and know the truths.

I feel I should clarify instead of erasing my confession regarding undies. Part of the reason I don't partake often in the panty wearing is because of my Company's New Dress Code. Granted, I was fairly free prior to that, but I do so enjoy being contrary to Corporate.

Ya see, part of the New Dress Code is that it is unacceptable to be at work with a "visibly obvious lack of undergarments."

So, I really just want to be in HR's office, with my accuser, when my accuser tries to explain that (s)he noticed I'm not wearing knickers because (s)he spent an inordinate amount of time staring at my ass.

Thanks for letting us know about what you really do, and it is good to know that you are still a student of physics even though it is only through your own endeavors.

Everything boils down to math. Chemistry is physics, which in turn is math. Engineering is also physics, as well as some chemistry, which both will boil down to math. :)

Morning, all!

Not a math person, so I'll stay out of that. I said my piece on the last thread, and judging by the way it looked this morning, English Comp is not one of my stronger suits after a certain hour.

Now history? Yeah, I am all about history. And drama. And psychology. And a few other things. But not math.

I do have to agree with Mavourneen here....coffee is the answer.

While I do agree that some university degrees are not worth the paper they are printed on, I do have to say that I have three of them. Having said that, I will also go on to state that I did as much personal learning and studying as I did in-class requirements. I have studied and researched things that interest me since I could hold a thought larger than "Want cookie!" in my head for a time. I do not see myself as an expert in any one subject, but I am still a student of everything.
I like the petri dish vs. oyster, JQ. I am looking forward to chatting with you!
Oh, I have also always like that quote, JQ...finally had an excuse to use it!

Alright, off for more coffee, then I'll be about for a spell.

Morning to all I missed, and to those who shall show up later!

I'll remember to tell Husband about the "lucky" thing the next time I'm nagging him!

VE, I love the PBS shows. I've seen a few of them. I must have been an astrophysicist in another life...but can't remember any of it. Maybe that's why I like Samantha Carter on SG-1. I have unresolved astrophysicist envy.

And for the record, Tidbit LOVES math. We've had to ban him from doing math at the dinner table. He must have gotten the math gene from my dad, who was a scientist.

mornin' Tristan.

History and philosophy were my "fun" subjects, where I learned neat things that may or may not be applicable to the daily life of an EE. English, aside from the reading of classical and modern literatures, was always my worst.

I try to go by the mantra you mentioned in the previous thread, "Learn something new every day". My dad instilled this in me at a young age and most days I do indeed learn something new.

EDIT:

Mavs - sucks on the power outage, cool that tidbit likes math, and you only nag because you love him :D

Excellent advice.

Does anyone remember The Book of Questions by Gregory Stock from the mid 80's? It had lists of deep questions. I found it over the weekend while moving the contents of a bookcase.

As far as fictional character I would most like to be more like? Not sure. I have a lot of favorite characters.... Fictional character I'd like to be most like? Eesh, I'm not quite sure. There's a lot that I like aspects of, but not the whole character. I think the one that would be closest would be Elizabeth Bennett. She was clever, intelligent, strong, independent and yet also caring, kind, generous, etc.

and the teacher rule for the day is..."don't make me drown you in a puddle"

Oh one of my poor little 7th graders ( 12 years old) has had a wardrobe malfunction of epic proportions. His pants were fastened with a hook and eye and now the eye has fallen off. The little guy has no hips or hinder and the pants keep sliding down. So we can't find a safety pin so we used a string belt ( which he had to tie so tightly he couldn't get it off for the bathroom) so then we went to the coach and he made a belt of athletic tape, which for some strange reason fused to the pants and wouldn't tie...so now he's out in the hall with Bruce ( another teacher) duct taping his pants back on. I kept trying not to laugh, but couldn't help it so I appologized and he said it was ok and his mom would probably be laughing too.

Mavs, we may have to share that IV bag.

Morning, MSG! Ah, Man of la Mancha...weren't Sean Connery and Danny DeVito slotted for that one?
Fictional character I'd want to be...hmm....I'd have to go with Cúchulainn.

Hobbleit, I was the same way...I would rather face an all-day essay than a math problem.

Morning, Kelkhil! I hope there is plenty of room in that pool.

Uh, JQ, not sure about that fictional character thing..."I am a real boy!"

We had that book, both at my parents' house when we were younger, then swiped to keep at one of our party houses for use during recreation. Very good stuff.

To answer the one you selected - Sex, Drugs, and Rock&Roll sounds fun.

Fictional character - Michael Valentine Smith, from Robert Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land, because it would be fun to see and learn through his eyes and way of thinking

'cause the Roman Gods up to that point were crap. Jeff, the god of biscuits, and Simon, the god of hair-dos.

So Hobbleit- what fictional character do you most want to be?

hmm.. that's a tough one. I'm not sure about now but when i was younger i wanted to be Alice from Alice In Wonderland. Might've been fun to go down the rabbit hole and have adventures in wonderland.

Hmm. You have a point there, Kelkhil. Although "big strong man" may not be the case. I'm more like Wash's description of himself. But still a boy at heart! Peter Pan-like, even.

ok, Kel. I just heard Timmy Turner say into the microphone "A big strong man!"
in that deep voice.

Good auditory effect, and all the way from Wisconsin!

*impressed*

Tristan - Yeah I can relate to the kid at heart. Can't wait to down load Super Mario Brothers and the legend of Zelda on my Wii and have some serious adolecent flashbacks!

Ya see, part of the New Dress Code is that it is unacceptable to be at work with a "visibly obvious lack of undergarments."

They've actually said that in your dress code?

Yes, it's actually in the officially released policy. And there are more laughable things (e.g. perhaps you didn't know that Birkenstocks are the actual cause of Corporate Downfalls and Economic Catastrophe, so they've, specifically, been banned). Such as, we cannot wear pants that sit below the waist line. Now, I don't actually own a pair of pants that sits right at my waist line, as (1) I am not a granny and (2) cannot actually find any such pants that fit me. So I proudly violate dress code on a daily basis. Also? Employees aren't allowed to use the main entrance. We's gotsta use da servants entrance!

*snikker* That'll take a lot of thought. I'll (try to) get back to that.

Yee, back t'work.

Kelkhil, I never did play those games...but I can tell you that when Atari came out with their "all-in-one" in that little joystick controller, I was giggling the whole time I played.

Morning, Hell's Kitten! It does sound like you work in coporate hell. We may have to mount a rescue operation...without visible signs of undergarments and pants that sag below our waists...ooh, ohh, and wearing Birkenstocks! That'll really throw them for a loop!

Lunch time!

Stuck in your head, but don't They Might Be Giants rock? The quote next to my avatar is from their song Ana Ng.
There are worse songs to have stuck in your head.

Yes. Yes they do. I've only seen them once, but it was at the House of Blues, so I think it counts for more. It was a blast...well, aside from the fact that I went with the guy I was kind of seeing as well as the girl he was kind of seeing at the same time as me. Very weird crap. I pulled myself out of the situation with a "you can't play both sides" discussion....the two of them are now married and I am beyond happy I didn't continue seeing him. Ended up to be a bit of a loser.

As for the question I missed about doing something for a year but not remembering it? Hell yeah. No question. Because even if I couldn't look back on it, it would be exhilarating and amazing during.

OK I have no kids and yet watch the Fairly Oddparents on a regular basis. Cosmo is truly a comic genius...example ( helping Timmy write an email to Trixie) " Now threaten to kidnap her parents if she doesn't like you. See it's threatening and romantic...it's threatmantic"
Though Timmy does have some great lines ( on seeing his dad with a puppet of his mom pretending it's real) " No amount of therapy can make this moment right."
