Warning: if you are a little over-sensitive (I'm looking at you [name withheld]) it might be best not to read this one. On the other hand, God, what an idiot.

Come on guys, it's an opinion. An opinion that we obviously don't share or understand, but an opinion nonetheless. Just because he/she/it doesn't agree with us doesn't make them less intelligent.

Well, that's mighty big of you. The reason I say "idiot" is that I think it's pretty clear that not only did this guy not get the show, he didn't even try. He took one look at spaceships and horses and made up his mind from there. Now, I don't know about you, but I believe that it is pretty bad to make one's mind up in the face of no experience. But it would seem that the reviewer utterly missed the point. Firefly wasn't meant to be sci-fi OR western--it was meant to be an interesting universe in which interesting stories could be told. If that's not your cuppa, fine; but I don't think that this chap got far enough to figure out what was going on, let alone give it a fair shake.

Okay, fine I won't insult the guy's intelligence, but I will say that I don't like him. And I think that he is one of the lousy purplebellies who are the reason that Firefly was cancelled. It was because they didn't want to give it a chance and they were too closed-minded to accept that 500 years in the future there could still be western accents...

Actually, I appreciate that review, even as I strongly disagree with its conclusions. The reviewer was articulate and pointed out exactly why he didn't like the show, and even while saying that Joss is extremely talented. Much better than the "This show sucks and if you you like it you're a loser!" type reviews some sites were putting up back in the day.

But yeah, a little part of me is laughing at him.

Me, too. Voting member, even. Methinks we drummed
this guy out long ago.

If you look only at how he describes some of the
characters you have to ask what show he was
watching (and also if he had seen the pilot???).

Had I seen this review in time I'd have assigned
him to look up the word "swarthy" and use it in
ten sentences.

(I know. I know. Picky, picky, picky...)

I completely disagree with this guy, and honestly, find him to be kind of a hypocrite.

He bashes the period/setting of Firefly in such a manner that you'd think he has bias against westerns. So, if Firefly had been a true Star Wars-like, futuristic show where everyone has lightsabers and laser cannons, it'd be a better show? It would pretty much make it every other futuristic show ever, my precious BSG included. As much as he may seem to dislike it, the western touch adds character to the show. I also question his maturity if he's laughing at moments that are meant to be dramatic. Don't know about you, but I had no issues distinguishing humor from drama.

Then, he goes into how it's the future, yet everyone is using six-shooters and riding horses...basically questioning the realism or believability of the show. What's the relevance in that? Who says the future is full of advanced weaponry and robots? The future could be exactly as Joss imagined it. That's the fun! We don't know what the future will bring! Considering he reviewed a show about a man who sees in black and white...EXCEPT for certain people and things, and is allegedly some sort of brilliant mind capable of God knows how many incredible abilities...I find it rather odd he questions Firefly's believability on the same page he praises John Doe's. Just a smidge odd to me, is all.

Not to mention the fact that John Doe sounds like the "The River Tam (If River Had A Penis) Spectacular".

I don't get it. It's like the guy wasn't even watching the same show we did.

Lets all send a 'nice' and 'friendly' message to the maker of that article. Lets just tell him how wrong he is. Firefly is just one of those shows that takes off after its done gone. But still, send a message!!!

I don't think people should really be getting worked up over this. all he says (in harsher terms mind but, hey , he's a reviewer it's what they do) is that the western/sci-fi mix didn't gel in his opinion, and as a result they whole dynamic of the show felt forced. Either way it's a 5 year old review, it's not something to be getting pissed off about.

Maybe the guy only saw one episode, or maybe just even a preview clip. I've never known one human being who after watching the Firefly DVD didn't absolutley become an instant fan...so go figure.

Also, the "beloved" Star Wars" verse was chock full of absurd contradictions as well...ie... "moisture farmers" living on the edges of the Empire, smugglers and petty crooks getting by in a verse controlled by Vader, and tell me..oh please tell me where did all the money, resources, and fuel come from to make the seemingly endless supply of ships, weapons, clothes, food , etc etc etc ?

Hey..it's science FICTION...just sit back, relax and enjoy!
