KEITHM

Hey folks. I'm the guy who wrote the Eulogy for Firefly ( http://keithmpire.com/firefly/index.html) last year, which some of you may recall -- Just mentioning that 'cause all the positive feedback I got from this site and others made me feel damn shiny, and also as a sorta introduction, since it's been awhile since last time I posted here.

Firefly has started airing on the canadian Space channel, and watching it again has rekindled everything I loved about the show the first time around. They played "Shindig" last night, which I'd previously missed, and it was great. It was like watching new Firefly. During the ball I turned to one of my friends and said "Man, I hope this degenerates into a fist fight" and he said, "Even better, a sword fight." Lo and behold, Firefly delivered! God damn I love that show.

I've been thinking of trying my hand at a fanfic recently, and I notice there's a pile of them here. I don't really know where to start in order to get a taste of what other people are doing, so I was wondering if you folk could toss me out the names of your favorite Firefly fics. I might not make it through them all, and I want to make sure I don't miss any gems.

Thank you kindly.

SARAHETC

Please allow me to pimp some Tara LJC O'Shea at you. After you read That Old Yeh Shen Story and Lex Talionis read everything else she wrote in this verse.

Then check out The Cortex at http://fireflyrecs.diaryland.com . She maintains it and has never done me wrong. Your first view is "latest recs" but there's a "view all" option near that bottom.

Tasty, tasty fanfic!

CHANNAIN

i DO aim to misbehave

Anything written by Sarahetc, Archer, Kaythryn and Defender82 (I’m sure there’s more, but a girl can only read so much). I took my cues from them. If you’re looking for something on the lighter side, Archer’s “Serenity Inc.” series is a great read, and then there’s Sarahetc’s “Browncoat Chronicles”, which is a fictional look at Firefly Fandom and what it could be in a different dimension. I'm totally in awe of both of them because I can't write satire to save my soul - does it show?

My advice – keep the characters in character unless you have a really good way to take them out of character. A FarScape-calibre reason.

LJC

*blush* Sarah loves me too much, and I adore her right back and can't pimp her enough either. If you have trouble finding my fic in the Blue Sun Room, here's my fanfic site: http://ljconstantine.com/fanfic/ff.html

Other authors (particularly of good gen and het fic) that spring immediate to mind are Hawkmoth ( http://www.mushy.freeserve.co.uk/anniesweb/fire/firefic.htm), Shanna (who archives at the Glow: http://firefly.populli.org), Annie M. ( http://www.mushy.freeserve.co.uk/anniesweb/ffly/tour.htm), scrunchy ( http://scrunchy.bravepages.com/stories/stories.html) who writes FAB Washfic, and there's a whole slew of archive and author links on the left hand side of the Cortex too. Hari Vane here at FFF has some plotty Simon/Kaylee stories that are good reads--tho to warn, the copy-editing can be a mite scattershot, so if that sort of thing throws you right out of a story, keep it in mind. But her ear for dialogue is fab.

But run--don't walk--and read Hawk's "Turn of the Wheel." Seriously. It's one of my all-time fave "Firefly" stories.

GLUEHWURM

I got started using LJC's Cortex site (already mentioned) for recommendations--give it a look. Authors I keep an eye out for include Hawkmoth, Maystone ( http://www.fanfiction.net/profile.php?userid=335326 ) and Drewbug ( http://www.fanfiction.net/profile.php?userid=5282 ).

PHILOMEL

I like lots o'stuff--Sarah's stuff, Tara's stuff, everything by Maystone and Northlight, Defender82's fic, hmm ... lots more I can't remember. It depends on your taste as well--I am partial to Wash or Zoe (or both) fic, some are Simon sensitive, others are partial to longer or shorter fic.

I too highly recommend the Cortex (Tara's rec page)--it's where I go when I need something to read. She, in turn, has a number of rec page links on her site, as well as links to the major archives. I have a smattering of my own favorites on my page (mostly so I can find them, so it's not extensive or anything, and it's somewhat more limited and redundant) but if it helps, my rec page is here:

Happy reading!

Phil.

VETERAN

Don't squat with your spurs on.

Chanain has been doing a great job with Heartbroken. I also like Gino Biffarino's Out of the Black and Johnnyreb's Adrift.
