Mircea, you don't have to make it to D*C to become a recruit...we plan on being around a long time after D*C!

Awesome! I guess I am lucky in that my hubby is a multi-talented tailor and armorer (I never thought that all his work with chainmail would ever be of any use to me *G* only goes to show to never count any hobby out). Right now he's gathering as many pictures of Zoe's uniform together in as many different poses as possible so he can get it just right.

Anyone have any ideas as to how to attach the chain mail sleeves onto the uniform?

Um, FoxyKitsune were you planning to go as Zoe or just use the Type B uniform? Also, not to cause trouble but Colonel O'Tearney will be designing the pattern for the uniforms for everyone to follow, so it comes out, well, uniform this way your hubby doesn't actually have to spend his time gathering the pictures. It will pretty much be done for him. As for the pants, I'm fair certain that all of us will be ordering from 1 of the 3 vendors, again for uniformity sake. You may want to ask the Colonel but the uniform posts are pretty straight forward about the uniform

Foxykitsune, I am well-pleased that your husband is a multi-talented tailor and armorer...he and I might have to talk someday (I am also an armorer as well as a "professional" costumer).
What FFG has said is true. The 76th has a uniform requirement that everyone will stick to. The patterns for the coat, vest and undertunic/smock (for the Type B uniform) will be the same. I have designed both the pattern for the coat and the vest, and am currently working on the pattern for the undertunic/smock. I appreciate the fact that your husband builds without patterns, as I do the smae most of the time. However, in order for us to look uniform, there needs to be a set pattern for EVERYONE, including you. As soon as I have the pattern for the Type B uniform done, I will start making costume pieces for those that want them, and offering the patterns to those that want to make their own. As far as the patterns go, the ONLY modifications allowable to them will be to fit the individual. There will also be cloth swatches sent with the patterns, and it is expected that you stick as closely to those as possible. SLIGHT variations in color are allowable.
Again, the idea if for uniformity as much as is possible. Please re-read the first post in this thread, and also check out this thread over on the 76th Proboard: http://76thbattalion.proboards59.com/index.cgi?board=uniform&action=di

There is no problem with you marching as a Zoe-clone from the Battle of Serenity Valley...you just would not be able to do so as a member of the 76th.

Colonel, I gots a question about footwear:

I notice that in the photos, you're wearing some mighty fine knee highs that appear to have zips up the inside of the leg.
BWTP was kind enough to provide links to various footwear, all of which is of the lace up the front, "current issue" variety.

Is it acceptable to wear brownish boots of a western flavor? Not the fanciful heavily embroidered pointy toed cockroach killer type, just a pair of round toed, mid-calf pretty much plain except the stitches needed to hold 'em together variety? I'll post a pic or two if needed (have to go back to the shop to take the pics).

Been needin a good pair of work boots anyway, and would like to get easy to slip on/off as opposed to lacing & tying...

I don't see a problem with it, as long as they are plain round toed boots. We don't want people marching with "Liberace of the Old West" boots. If they are as you describe them, I thing they would be fine.

WWMerc has some nice ones. One I was planning on possibly getting (as I want to stear clear of laces the more I think of it) is the Oak Tree Preacher Boot they have. All there boots can be found here:

Many thanks for the link!
Those are some very nice boots. Bit more coin when compared to the lace-ups, but definitely much more what I was looking for.

I don't understand the "Liberace" (what a great term) boots. Most of the time you'd wear your pants over the boot, unless you were expecting mud/dirt to besmirch your pants, and if that's the case, why expose your fancy boots which cost a fair bit more than your pants, and are harder to clean?

Anyone?

Hiya Flattop..We are using the screencaps from Firefly to pattern our "look" and they do show the boots outside of the pants...for both the Type A and Type B uniforms. And I think the "Liberace" style boots are the really fancy, schmancy western style with lots of stitching and gee-gaws. An equestrienne (oooh, too early to spell-check, sorry) would work as well..I gots myownself a pair of Frye boots that were approved by 76th Command.

Thanks Sister.
By "Don't understand" I was meaning "What are these people thinking" for non-costume, everyday going to the grocery/work wear. I guess there must be a part of the population that does wear 'em (judging by the selection on the walls at the local shop), but I haven't seen 'em...

For the purposes of the 76th, I understand.

Okay..oh, and old-time, for-real cowboys used to wear their pants inside the boots to protect their legs when riding through sagebrush. I learned that from an old-time, for-really, real cowboy! 'Course old-time boots were'nt quite as 'fancied' up and pointy! (Altho some newer-times cowboys and cowgirls say the pointy toes are useful for climbing up a steep arroyo or squashing spiders in corners...;)

In the Army we always tucked our pants into our boots as well. Not only does it look better, but it's safer too. When out in the field (for military, civilians or cowboys) and you're trudging through God knows what, having your pants tucked into your boots kept all matter of critter and nasty from crawling up your leg. Ticks are especially a problem in alot of the areas that soldiers train (and cowboys worked) so by wearing long sleeved shirts and tucking their pants into their boots it limits the area of skin exposed to ticks.

Happy New Year, y'all!. Yes, I am almost a day late...sorry, been offline since last night. I hope everyone had a safe one!

FlatTop, looks like the XO answered the question already (thanks, BWTP!). I like the boots in that link...might look at those now!
When we suggested the lace-up boots, we were thinking modern military and price...as those boots are cheaper...but if you are wanting to spend the coin, then almost any of the boots in the link provided by BWTP would work wonderfully. Remember, think Brown!

And yes, we will be wearing the pants tucked into the boots.

Off again...I'll be back at work tomorrow, so I'll be in here at least every now and then!

IREMIST

Forgive me, I'm so new here I'm green, but I have some questions...
My hubby has been a gamer for ages past and has been to several cons and since my Ma just moved to Georgia we'd thought we'd try for Dragon Con, so when I saw something about a Browncoat march, I got all excited, but then saw all the stuff about uniformity I was a bit put off. It's good that ya'll are so enthused about dressin' the part but isn't being an Independant all about being anti-uniformity?
My hubby still wants to march and show his support for the best show on Earth but do you have to wear a uniform? Can you march as another
character?

Is there anything else I should know?
BE KIND TO THE NEWBIE!

Sometimes the good guys wear brown and sometimes the can't afford uniforms:(

Iremist, first off, welcome to the 'Verse! Or at least to FFF.net. Glad to see you here!

No, to march in the parade, you do not have to be a member of the 76th. If you'll contact WickedWren (she posted a few lines up...clink on her screen name, and you'll be able to send her a private message) and she'll fill you in on the marching.
The 76th was created to represent a Batallion of Independent soldiers, therefore we are striving for maximum uniformity. This is the first time there will be an organized group of Independent soliders at D*C. You do not have to join to march in the parade...feel free to be whoever you'd like to be! I dressed as Mal last year, and most of the rest of the BDH's were represented; some several times over.

I hope that settles your fears. The 76th is an organized group with requirements to march as a member. The SouthEastern BrownCoats are the ones to contact if you are interested in marching in the parade as anyone else.

QUANDOM

Thoughts on Boots;

My favorate Civil War Sutler has some excellent and inexpensive boots you can see at
http://www.blockaderunner.com/Catalog/catpg14a.html

Note that they are also carrying WWII GI repros at a very reasonable price. If curious, scroll to

WW II G.I. DOUBLE BUCKLE BOOTS

I have several pairs of boots, including high-quality knee-high russet (light brown) set which is pricey - $220 - but you've rarely seen this quality.
Source for those interested is "Fall Creek Sutlery" at
http://www.fcsutler.com/fcshoes.asp

The russet are special order.
Fall Creek also carries a full line of 'boot grease'.

Don't you worry now, Iremist. There are plenty of non-76ers that march in the parade. The guy last year dressed as Wash with the spike through his chest was pretty damn funny.

Hell, I have a picture of a Mal in his pretty floral bonnet.
