First off a big damn thankyou for this community. I am brand new to the serenity universe and after nightly marathons of the series and multiple viewing s of the movie I think I'm pretty much addicted. I have never fallen as completely in love with any bit of science fiction I have seen before Firefly and it really is just magic. I'm not going to even attempt to call myself a browncoat as that's proly doing a disservice to those of you who have made the show a part of your life, but maybe for now I can be a lesser beigecoat or something similiar

The question I have is something which has likely been repeated 110131839281x before this and I apologize, but please, for the sake of all that is holy, can someone update me with the latest bit of information on a continuation to Firefly/Serenity. The last I've seen is Whedon's words on Whedonesque which were pretty damn sobering.

"There’s no sequel, no secret project regarding Serenity or somesuch and I’m not even sure how anyone thought there was talk there. So let’s put that to bed and smother it with a pillow"

Has Joss given up on the series? Is it even a possibility at this point.

Even if the answer is no, sugar coat it for me a bit so I can keep on hoping

Edit: GOOD GRIEF htf can they not make another one if the amazon.com numbers are any indication of how it is selling.

Mr. whedon has since said that firefly/serenity is not dead, just no one has asked him to do another yet.

"And I think calling him that is an insult to the psychotic lowlife community."

Welcome home Schwartz0 - if you love the show (as you obviously do!) you are one of us. It's not the shade of your coat or how long you've worn it, just the fact that it's a brownish color.

There's no sequel movie or series in the works, but Joss hasn't given up hope, he's just not holding his breath while waiting. But I get the impression if asked, he'd jump back in with both feet and a huge grin! Now, as soon as I win the Powerball....

There are new comics by Dark Horse coming out, and there's at least one 'verse based novel in the works (or so I hear). As far as new canon dialogue and character interaction, that's about all that's on the horizon, for now. But there's some REALLY good fanfic here in the Blue Sun Room, there's The Signal and Firefly Talk podcasts, and lots of other stuff if you poke about for a while, like at serenitystuff dot com for example.

Once again, welcome! Post well, and post often - we're glad you're here.

A tad off topic but let me jump in and say that the fan community is one of the things that in my opinion makes Firefly so great. After watching Heroes I tried to get involved on the NBC.com forum for the show and man what a bunch of a**holes. Anyone that came on trying to post a question like this or simply talk about the show was shot down immediately and told to go read one big thread that was hundreds of pages long called "The Heroes Unified Theory Thread." What jerks!! I've been posting over on the scifi.com forum for the show since b/c the people over on the scifi forums are generally okay folk, although none like the Browncoats! Always greeting newbs with smiles, open arms, and a coat of their own.

Welcome--to our shared joy and shared sorrow.

The reason there will be no more FF/Serenity is that there is no proven market sufficient to fund it. FF started out as a series on Fox, which is notorious for killing good series. It preempted the series several times, put it in the Slot of Death (Fridays at 8pm) and then delivered the death warrant after only 11 episodes had aired. (The remaining filmed episodes were unavailable until the DVD release.) That was fall of 2002. Fox has shown no interest in reviving a show that has now been dead, for purposes of tv, for 4 years.

Fortunately, Fox DVD did issue the series on DVD, and it has done VERY WELL--well enough to convince Universal to green-light a deal for Joss to do a movie. This was more than a minor miracle, since tv shows with early mortality don't generally get backing to be made into major motion pictures. Joss got about $38 million: enough to do a good, if not a flashy, job.

The BDM as we call it (short for Big Damn Movie) was a critical success, but not a financial one. It sort of made back what it cost in domestic ticket sales, but that's not enough, since that wouldn't include the advertising budget. I"m not sure how it did internationally, but bottom line is that it wasn't anywhere near the moneymaker we (and Universal) had hoped. Thus--the franchise is effectively dead.

As the previous posts have indicated, there are comic books, and of course a ton of fanfiction, mostly available here. But the harsh reality of how movies and tv are made is at odds with the likelihood of any kind of revival. Of course, if a huge groundswell of fannish interest continued to develop over the years, and the actors weren't getting other work, and Joss wanted to revisit this 'verse, that might change: witness "Star Trek." But Trek had three seasons in the can, not eleven episodes.

Sorry I don't have better Christmas news. . . .

Those answers were most complete and informative than I could have hoped for. Thankyou! I'm not sure where this whole train might be heading but for my part I am going to start scouring the boxing day deals for any firefly or serenity and I shall plant these gifts in the homes of my friends with a note that says WATCH ME DAMMIT.

Good for you! This is how converts are made!
The only way it more 'Fly *ever* happen, film- or TV-wise,
is when someone thinks there'll be enough little

investment worthwhile.

WHOISRIVER

For info, after he posted that message on Whedonesque, he came back and did another post a week later which clarified things more.

Here's his post

Quote:

Here's a thing: when "Firefly" was cancelled, my heart got broke. Sounds a bit much, but it changed me. Not even Serenity could patch that wound. I'm wearier, warier -- after all those years as a movie writer, you'd think I'd be prepared for another lesson on my unimportance in the scheme of things, but I wasn't. There are two very separate worlds: the marketplace, and the bustling bazaar that is my brain. The brain place is crowded with goods, ideas, sequels, spinoffs, animated versions, miniseries, radio dramas -- this is just the used goods. All the new wares are in there as well and it's deafening. Once I create a verse I never let go of it. And figuring out how much of my energy should be devoted to reawakening the projects you all love with the actors and characters I all love, and how much should be forging ahead and creating entirely new works (which you are contractually obligated to love) is exhausting. More than you know. You know the horse caught bwtween two pools of water? Add seven pools, and make the horse wicked A.D.D. The other world, the marketplace, I don't even begin to understand or predict. All these rumor of projects or the death of projects... When the two worlds align and something actually happens, whatever it is, you guys know I'll be on this site as soon as I'm allowed to be. And I'll be very very clear. There is no news. Not never, just now.

Your Scribe, -j.

Personally, I know Joss would love to work with those actors again, and get into that world. If a company ponies up the cash, he will, although -- frankly -- it's a big if. But I can dream.

The crew of Serenity WILL be back in some form or another. Regardless of the fact that no studio is giving Joss money for another movie and he's not CURRENTLY working on a script (but is, in fact, working on Serenity: Better Days, the next comic miniseries), Mister Whedon has made it clear on a number of occassions that he's got more stories left to tell in the 'Verse.

So hold the line. They'll be back.

If I may be a little self-promoting here for a moment, don't forget our little project over at www.stillflying.net. This is a virtual continuation of the series (in script form). We finished up season one (starting immediately after Objects in Space) and are well into our second season. Our next epsiode, "Confluence", will "air" tomorrow (which is, incidentally, the one-year anniversary of our first episode). With 21 episodes averaging 50 pages each, that's over a THOUSAND pages of Firefly for y'all to read!

Thanks for the continued post you guys: you really know how to welcome someone on these boards :)

Gwek: I bumped into your site a few days back and I will be reading through every single episode you have posted. I've heard nothing but good about your work and I am pretty damn excited to start reading tonight when I get a chance.

Seeing the kind of work people have put into expanding the 'Verse along with the sorts of sales we are still making on amazon.com and elsewhere I'm not scared no more. Something this good can't stay away forever.

Just remember that, like a fine wine, we get better with age. :)

I think our first batch of episodes are good, but we really hit our stride in Season Two. At least that's what the audience tells us!

Anyway, enjoy!

Welcome to obsession. Dig around through the various threads here and elsewhere in the 'verse, and you'll find plenty to interest you, and folk who really do understand what you mean (unless you're totally off your nut or have a problem with your brain bein' missing; in which case we'll still offer a bit of shelter from the rest of reality). Or if you're a troll (don't ask), but you don't seem to be just yet.

Welcome schwartz0!

As others have stated, nothing happening from Joss's end at this time, but we'll hold the line just the same.

Welcome to our shiny home in the internet 'verse. Please let me offer you a drink in welcome.

Have fun poking about and don't be afraid to either ask questions or bring a thread back up from the nether-realm (aka: the archives). Someone will be glad to either help you and talk the subject out a bit more.

The archives for the General Discussions Forum is, well not happy. If you want to search for a particular topic you can Google it up. Just go to Google and type in the topic followed by: site:fireflyfans.net and hit enter and it'll only give you hits for this site.

Yea! *does the happy 'we got a new recruit' dance*
