In "Trash" you see that Nathan has a tatoo but I've never been able to make out what it actually is. Does anyone know?

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

It's a scarab beetle. I've got a picture of it somewhere or other that's pretty clear, and it's definitely a scarab beetle in tribal tattoo style.

PR, check with FollowMal and the Appreciatin' Nathans.
I KNOW I've seen an extreme closeup of that tattoo somewhere - perhaps on their threads at serenitymovie.

It’s a tattoo of an Egyptian glyph on Nathan’s right hip, also his favorite type of cheese is medium cheddar (mine too).

Nathan's tatoo on his right thigh is clearly visible also in his Outer Limits episode Starcrossed.

Here's a pic from the Outer Limits episode:

This is stinkingrose. Hubby was logged in and called me over so I stole his keyboard.

It's so big!

Seeing a scarab is easier if you kind of squint a little, focus on the two lighter circly bits, presume the skinny jobs up top are mandibles, and then decide that the thicker bits are the back legs.
Or wings. Or something. I'm sure it's lovely and highly detailed in person.

I'm having a little trouble with it too, but I can't make it turn into an Egyptian glyph either.

Curse soft focus!
Anybody got a movie theater that can freeze frame?

Dun matter where it is. The fact that it exists and is mystery is the fun for me. I'm a fan of tattoos, been looking to get one for many, many years, so I like to see what other people have.

oh I was just kidding Hell's Kitten,
I read somewhere that Nathan was glad his tatoo isn't that easily seen and identified...

and I think it is interesting that Joss left it in, he could have shot Nathan's left hip,
or used make up to hide the tatoo...

If you look at the little insert in the picture, where it's turned there, then compare to, say, this one...

...and just bend it a bit, you can definitely see the beetle. It's the only Egyptian thing I can see in that shape, and I'm into Egyptian symbols myself.

My two cents,....I remember reading before "Serenity" premiered(sp) that yes it was Egyptian and he said he had done it when he was very young. He also said he wished he hadn't now, but at least it was not in a spot that could be seen much. Ancient history is my field of chosen study,...I think PhoenixRose is right; a scarab is the closest thing and that is what I thought it was when I first saw it. Nathan said at the time that Egypt was of great interest to him If my memory serves me, this comment was made last year before Flan 1.

I used to be really, really into ancient civilizations and myths and stuff especially Egyptian. I have a whole bunch of $50 books on my shelf that I never use now though they are good for finding names for RPG's. I can definitely see the scarab, it's sort of facing left, slanted up a bit in the Trash screencap.

Embers - yeah, but I did start to feel a little lecherous, posting that photo, so I wanted to, um, clarify.

PhoenixRose & FillyGirl - I can see where it could resemble a scarab, and that was my first thought when I saw Trash, but the asymmetry of it is the thing that bothers me. I guess it could be a very stylized scarab... but... something's not quite right, even if you take into account physical distortion of the image.

I was leaning towards perhaps a combination of hieroglyphs or a god's head or something along those lines, but that could just be me projecting my own love of Egyptology; you know, what would I have done.

Ah, well. Maybe one day he'll tell us. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy searching through all my books.

I agree, its not the scrab that we are all use to, but I can't think of any other image that was scared that the Egyptains used. It could be a bad drawing of a scrab. I wish Nathan would clear this up. Maybe if he's at DC someone could ask "politely".

Thanks for the chance to look at Nathan's tattoo again... I love it when this subject comes up. LOL

I've guessed a scarab as well, and I've done some studying of Ancient Egyptian history.. and hieroglyphs. But I read somewhere last year that it's a combo of a glyph ( we may be right on the scarab part) and a peace symbol of some sort. So the theory that it's a combo of stuff and that's why it looks off sounds right to me.

Again... happy looking... thank you.

I've thought of just asking "Okay, just tell me yes or no; is your tattoo a scarab beetle?" But I don't know if I'd have the guts to do it. I mean, that is a little personal.
Hey, HK, maybe if he's there we could say we have a bet on.
Still pretty personal, yeah? Is there a way to not be creepy about it?

*edit* I can sort of see a peace design in the middle of it, with the legs and antenae around it. So it might be a scarab beetle with a peace sign body? Interesting...

Thanks Hell's Kitten for posting that picture. I think that's a very passionate scene and one of Nathan's best love scenes, especially when considering that his patriotic warrior woman/singing sultress was holding a gun on him a minute before.

Merry Christmas, FillyGirl!

No worries on the double post... great way to start the day Nathan's tattoo is.

Nope, I don't think there is, PR.. the gals that went to Moonlight Rising said he was asked a sort of personal question and he was visibly mad about it. He didn't say anything rude, but his face went "Mal-like". And who can blame him? So I am assuming that all discussion of a personal nature is off limits.

During B3, you could tell he was uncomfortable being in a crowd of people on the bar at the Hilton and was much more relaxed outside where he had some room and it was less in his face... I think he likes his space and his privacy. Doggone it for us though, cuz we'll never know what that tat is...
Went back and saw you posted re: the peace symbol.. I kind of see the same thing.

Yup... one of the best love scenes ever! According to the annals of the Nathan Appreciator's.
