Hi Imponderables!

Soory for this MIA, but I needed to get a few things sorted (and presents bought) these past few days.

Welcome, Fitch66! I was AWOL and missed your welcome thread, so Welcome!! We've got several folks in your time zone, so no worries about that.

NGV: *giggle* and hugs. Looking foward to the piccys.

Pessimist or Optimist: Pessimist, namely due to the times I've been optimistic, I've gotten bitten in the butt by something bad when I wasn't looking.

Welcome back, rugbug! *waves*

ANYhow, one of the standard questions was "Is the glass half full, or half empty?" as that is, apparently, the One True Question that will induce convulsions of enlightment about one's true nature when one answers it.

My answer was this: "The glass is neither half full nor half empty, you dumb sh**. You only gave me f***ing half of what I f***ing wanted."

The "career counselor" left me alone after that, for which I was thankful; her name was Candy and she liked to hug people. *shudder*

*sputter* *spew* I love it, HK! The look on her face must have been truly priceless.

Traveler: Nice piccy of Kim Novak.

*waves* to all the other Imponderables!

TRAVELER

Hello LittleAlbatross:

Nice to see your post. You do not have to turn my supervisor into a toad. When I have my review, he seems more concerned about by spelling then he does about what I actually say in the review.

I have also had some very good supervisors.

I actually did start out playing Risk many moons ago. My Risk game is one of the originals.

Today I am with a major group of military gamers. We paint one inch tall figures. I am an average painter. We have some who would rival Rembrandt. I kid you not. We game the Napoleonic Wars, the Civil War, Romans, and the Middle Ages.

A Napoleonic army will contain 1200 figures. They may be formed into units of 24 to 100 figures each. They are covered in braid and feathers. If you go to the library and get a book on uniforms for this period you will see how fancy these guys dressed. More braid was supposed to mean the unit was of higher moral. That means they would take a licking and keep on ticking. The table is eight feet across and twenty-four feet long. It is quit a site to see. Two armies marching toward each other. The French in dark blue and the English in bright red. The table will have hills, woods, towns, and rivers. By using these as cover as you try to find some advantage over your opponent.

But eventually you must clash. At that moment you may win or lose the battle. When order that first charge across the battlefield your heart really pounds.

So that is what I game these days. But the computer age is putting an end to it. You can by games for your computer that will give you all the above with painting a single figure or the need for a large table. But it looks grand on the table.

EDIT:
Hello RMMC:

Phoenixship gave me the picture of Kim Novak.

DANCINGNEKO

Okay this is really weird. I posted something earlier (as in earlier this morning) but somehow the computer (or the internet) had decided that my messages are yummy snacks or something.

MsG -- Yipes, I hate those days. Hopefully things get better sooner than later.

RIMG: Sure, if you want to drive to Honolulu, Hawaii that sounds fine (and let me know where that interstate is -- I'm pretty sure that there are a lot of folks who would be willing to drive it instead of flying it. )

RugBug: YAY! Congratulations for winning and getting over the nerves after the accident.

NVG: *snicker* I'm not getting involved in that one...*giggle* *cough* (I'll admit to blinking a few times and re-reading it to make sure that I wasn't seeing crazy things but that's it.)

Welcome Fitch66 to our corner of the 'verse!

Pessimist or optimist? Umm...I think "I'm a teacher..." kinda answers it. I try to be optimistic at work, but by the end of the workday, I've used most of the optimistic portion of me up and the only way I'll be optimistic is by happily predicting the worst that can happen. (Does that make sense to anyone at all?)

HK: *snicker* That sounds like something I'd say on my "I'm on my last nerve, and it's frazzled, fried, and you're standing on it, so GO AWAY!" mood. I try hard to not say it that way, grant you, but...yeah. Sounds like me at my snarkiest.

Little more than two more days until break - whee! I'll regain my sanity for a week or two before it drains out again.

See you all later.

ASORTAFAIRYTALE

Tristan - Hi! Yeah I never can keep up with these threads very well...real life gets in my way too much..

Traveler - I think having a review is like having a test...no matter what you do, you think it's gonna be awful. But then it also depends on who's gonna be reading it too.

HK - Haha, I soo wish I coulda seen that! Those "career counsler" types who think they know so much could really use that....

Risk, I never could really understand that game....I think the whole "taking over the world for fun" thing is more for a guys than girls....

Hiya RMMC, LittleAlbatross, MsG, DancingNeko, and the rest!

Oh Mavourneen!! I cannot believe what a crazy day I have had!! I woke up feeling like crap to be honest - I have been fighting off a bug for 24 hours and i looked and felt like the proverbial 'death warmed up'... but once I got to work, fed kids, dropped boys off at school and went to check my mail I had the surprise of my life!!

VerseExplorer, my Kaylee-clone, commissioned Tristan to make me a Kaylee jacket!!!!! It is divine and I have been wearing it or carrying it around or hanging it where I can see it ever since... it's just here actually... *sigh* I still look like death warmed up but I am feeling all glowy! I wasn't even sad saying goodbye to my gorgeous kids who I won't be seeing for at least 2 weeks!

I will post pics when I can upload them my wonderful Imponderers!!

For those of us without the time, patience, skills or funding to purchase and paint the hundreds of figurines, or the willingness to engage in battles against young, whiney rules-lawyers, games like the Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War series (especially Dark Crusade) are more than acceptable.

Especially when watching (and listening to) the Necrons slaughtering the Orks.

Edit: I don't mean to imply that all tabletop gamers are whiney rules-lawyers, just the ones in Adelaide who hang out at the Games Workshop store.

I do hate those kinds of people. They slow down the game because they have to be right on some little technicality, and no one likes them for it.

I can understand the money/time issue with the minatures, as I would be in that boat as well, but it is still very impressive to see a battle the size of one that Traveler was talking about or a 20,000 point battle of Warhammer 40k laid out on a giant table.

I'm sure it is, but it's not quite the same without the voices and the blood-splatter and the explosions and the sight of Squiggoth being decapitated by a Grim Reaper.

Lines like "Fresh meat! I can make so many improvements!" and "Uh Boss, We'se gettin' shot up" just never get old.

*Starts chanting "Orks, Orks, Orks, Orks........" until he snaps out of it*

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I am an optimist!! In case you guys didn't pick that up over the last few months!! And this is true even when I am suffering from depression... I might think the worst of myself and my own abilities, but I will genuinely believe that miracles can and do happen, life is worth living because you never know what's around the corner, and friends and family are the greatest gifts in my life!

Oooooh - did I mention that I have a genuine, Tristan original Kaylee jacket!!!
Oh yes I do!! <--this is what I have looked like most of the day too!!

EDIT: coz I didn't really get into the whole gaming topic! I have always been fascinated with the concept of painting little soldiers and reenacting great battles - Waterloo has significance for me because of my gr-gr-gr-grandfather Josiah Small, who was a lieutenant in the Cavalry - family legend is that he had 2 horses shot out from under him but he survived without a scratch... I still have to find any documented evidence to support this - but it's a good story!

Morning, all!
Wow, once again, I have missed quite a bit.

LA29...no, no decorating. I have decided not to bother, as I will be spending the holidays with family away from my house. All is well.
Ooh, missing ornaments, eh? You'll probably find them stashed under some furniture in July!

Hell's Kitten...that was brilliant! I would have loved to have seen Candy's expression after that!

Hey, RMMC! MIA no more, we hope!

Traveler...ooh...hand-painted armies! That is something I would like to get into, but I would completely lose whatever shreds of social behavior I still possess if I did that!

Hey, Neko! Sanity is overrated, so you'll be alright.

ASAFT, I know what you mean. This thread gets busy while I am asleep, and it makes it hard to catch back up! It's good to see you, though.

Morning, Penguin! Yep, still miss seeing you all the time! If I don't get to say it before the date, I hope you have a good Christmas!

Qing ren! Glad the jacket made it to you! And yes, your Kaylee-clone is one amazing person!

Morning, RIMG. That is indeed sad news, but thank you for sharing it with us.

Morning, Mav! Anything? Oh, never mind, I see the exceptions label has already been handed down. So, I will just say hello!

Morning, Nico. How are the fires?

It looks like there may have to be a line for the Magda-hugs at D*C! Hee hee hee!

Morning, MSG! Huh, so you break out the secret "cats of death and destruction" on the board games, eh?

Goodnight, qing ren!

Ok, time for more coffee. I'll be around most of the day...probably in lurk-mode as work is piling up before the holidays around here!

HUGS and keep warm sweet NV

Night Magda:)

Yes the cat rampage is funny ( well it is to me. My husband and the friend he's playing with get really bent out of shape when the cat leaps to the table and takes out a squadron of orcs with it's tail then snatches up a chariot in it's mouth and runs away)

Oh good imponderable ...what's your favorite funny pet story?

Mine is the day we were taking my cat to the vet ( this was when I was 16) and my prissy( but much loved) sister was holding her and Cath said " I don't know what you complain about this cat is perfect in the car." Just then the cat panicked and pee'd all over Cathy...it was sooooooo funny!!!

This might not count for funny, but it amuses me to no end:

Ami has this cat, Darci, who is half Mainecoon (wildcat). One night, Ami and I had been arguing (imagine that) and it set Darci off. She howls extremely loudly when she feels genuinely threatened, and it caused the neighbors to call the cops. We got her into a cage as they were showing up, which they did in force. There were at least 3 squad cars on the street, though only one cop came to the door. Darci was in her cage, but she was howling and screaming and making it violently rattle. The cop, a big black dude about my size, was hesitant to even come in the apartment, looking around from outside with his flashlight to make sure everything was ok (I should mention at this point that she is a very racist cat). They left without further incident, and she eventually calmed down. To this day it still amuses me that they sent so many cars for a little (well, 10-11 lb) cat.

I feel like I have told this story here before, so I apologize if that is the case.

I'm back, msg. My upstairs boss took me and my co-worker out to lunch. It was really nice.

Besides Annie & Wyatt shopping, are you done shopping?

I just got a UPS package w/ something for my sister...and I started making a list...and realized I simply have not purchased everything I need to get!
ACK! I was supposed to shop last weekend but got corralled by the mom-in-law into doing a Creative Memories open house.
I'm going to have brave Rockville Pike tonight and do some shopping.
*shudders*

Ok MisterG says it's over kill but
I got Annie a set of horses that come in a box that looks like a stall and each horse has a book with it too. Also a large Mary Englebright illustrated complete Mother Goose and a set of spot books, a kids goldfish bowl with play fish, and a cd of Disney songs
For Wyatt I got 3 clear view moveable books, a set of spot books, a new release big bear little bear hand illustrated, a Bob the Builder playset with a working circular saw( makes noise) and 18 lights/sounds, and a CD of kids songs.

I was going to get them each a dvd, but MisterG made me stop...sigh

You sound like my sister - since our parents are gone she has appointed herself Carson's Grandmother/Aunt and buys not only for herself but also for my Mom...I told her to ease back this year. We'll see...

Young ones are easier than older kids. My nieces and nephews in Colorado are really hard to buy for. I ended up sending them cashy money...because that is what they really wanted.

I think I'll go to one shopping center up on the Pike. It has a Toys R US, a Linen & Things, and a few other good stores.
*fills with dread*

Yeah I have to say cashy money is much appreciated far more than anything else you could give. It brings joy and freedom from parental control as well:)

Ok shuddering over the toys are us thought. This close to Christmas it's a mad house.

Wow, I really cannot think of any animal stories right now, which is just plain ridiculous since I definitely live with craploads of pets...
Oh well, maybe I'll think of one later when I'm not half asleep...

And yeah, Christmas + kids + toys = Extreme mad house.

Well see ya'll later, I need to sleep now.

Howdy Imponderables!

Tristan: I'd like not to go MIA, but the likelyhood is it'll still be happening. I'll be up north for a few days next week and will not be able to play here.

Funny Pet Story: We had a couple of dogs (German shepherds), one was medium sized and incredibly smart and the larger one, incredibly not-so. One day they'd both gotten out of the yard and when we discovered it when the smaller dog returned. She was quite pleased with herself, and wanted lots of attention. My mom looked at the dog and said, "okay, what did you do with her?" The smaller dog then proceeded up the block. My mother went the opposite direction and found the missing dog, who was completely lost. Yep, the smaller dog, took the other one out, lost her and came home....and then tried to lie about it!

NVG: nice piccys.

VERSEEXPLORER

Morning All,
RMMC, I love the story about the smart little dog, who "took the other one out, lost her and came home....and then tried to lie about it!" Too funny.

I liked all of the pet stories. MsG's cat that attacks the army, RIMG's howling cats that even scares the police, NVG's old dog that won't cross the old limits even when the chain is broken.

I've had quite a few pets through the years. This incident sticks in my mind. My sweet cat was curled up on my stomach when I was reading in bed. One book that was close to the edge fell off the bed with a BOOM. In a split second I was startled, so my book fell out of my hands just in time for me to see my cat falling straight for my face with her claws extended. I screamed as a couple of claws dug into my cheek, and she jumped straight up again. She took off and didn't come out for hours. I know it might not sound that funny, but I couldn't stop laughing when it happened.

Morning, LA.

Yes, Magda, I am still up. It was great to chat with you. You are very welcome!

I should be going to sleep for a few hours before I have to go to work. I love working with young children, but I hate to be around them when I'm tired.

Hugs and Kisses for both of you. LA, have a great day, and Magda, have a great night.
