Morning all...this is going to be an "interesting" week ( and by that I define interesting as Oh god oh god we're all going to die) Forgot and left my purse at my mom's last night and can't get it til later today so I have no classroom keys and no way to get a bunch of stuff I need to.I could rant on about all the "fun" stuff I'm stuck with today, but I think I shall focus on the positive.

So there's a ponderable...are you a pessimist or an optimist and why?

I'm an optimist( I"m sure you couldn't have figured that out) because I have a naturally sunny disposition and because I've just never seen the point in expecting the worst.

Morning, msg!

Funny you should ask this, as Husband & I were just talking about this same thing and we came to the conclusion that I am pessimistically optimistic.

I normally look on the bright side of things, but I always seem to expect the other shoe to drop. It always seems to. I'm usually cheerful, too. Cheerful but wary.

Morning, MSG!
Here's hoping you don't die.

Pessimist for the most part, but only relatively recently. But, I also try not to be a billboard pessimist, meaning I will not rain on anyone's picnic unless they are way too chipper for my state of mind.
I am an optimist in several areas, but not an over-the-top enthusiast. I tend to take things as they come.
Yet another ambiguous response!

And I never would have pegged you for anything BUT an optimist, MSG. :hugs:

mornin' MSG.

Sucks about the interesting week.

My grandmother taught me to be an optimist, to look for the good (or the funny) in any situation. I have found that for me, worrying about the negative just makes it worse if it happens, and is unnecessary work if not.

MSG - I'm a pessimist by most people's standards, but I consider myself to be pretty optimistic in the sense that I try to think of solutions to all the problems I observe. But being of a natural fatalistic disposition, I can see why people would describe me as the former.

btw, I got your PM, it's just been busy (again) for the past couple of days. I'll be responding to you very soon.

Tristan - I finally signed up for the 76th, sorry it took so long.

Long story short:

I bought two 1911's for 1200 dollars with the hopes of selling one for a decent price at the gunshow in Reno. Didn't sell the extra.

After an all day trek I ended up coming home with an extra weapon. I called my tat guy who metioned he was looking for a good pistol. I ended up trading my sister 200 dollar tat and an early sixties Ithaca 37 Featherweight in about 85 percent condition. minimum worth is 1200 dollars, but I think I'll never see my money from it. I'm thinkin' it might just end up as my field gun which is fine.

So John (the tat guy) mentioned that he'd try hookin' me up with a few qomen he knows. The first one he mentions sounds incredible. As he put it she's got a (abridged) great figure, seems very intelligent, a little shy, and seems like alot of fun. I think she'd be perfect for you. I sit through a five minute explaination of this great woman and I say, "Her name wouldn't happen to be She Who Shall Not Be Named would it?"

"Yeah man, thats her. So you already know her?"

If anyone else ain't laughing at this then I must be crazy 'cause I threw my head back I was laughing so hard.

Anyone who's followed this ordeal... Like I said, out of the blue.

I'm just droppin' by to say a quick hi to all the imponderables! I've missed you. I feel hopelessly out of touch with y'all, but howdy just the same.

NV: what's happening in the GND saga?

Tristan: how's dating?

MSG: BOB?

I can't continue through the whole list of posters, but I'm hoping that all is going well for everyone!

And a chance to answer a quick imponderable:

I'm a pessimist. Suprise! Actually, I'm just cynical. I can see the bright side of life, but more often then not, I know that's not reality and can't fool myself to believe it is. I'm a very happy person, but in a dark comedy sort of way.

MSG! Hey there. Work has been off the wall crazy. Over time, people out, way too much to do. I'm really hoping it slows down sometime soon. Don't they know they are cutting into my internet time?

Outside of work, life's been hectic but good. Did a horse show for the first time since the injury. It was nerve-wracking and confidence building all at the same time. Horse was good and we won three classes. Got third in the other. I was happy that we hadn't completely lost everything in my time off. Now I just have to get back to jumping higher and we'll be right on track.

Not much else has been going on. Geez, I type it here and life seems so boring. But it's hardly that and I feel like I'm running from one thing to the next. If I get my Christmas cards out before Valentine's it will be a major coup.

Tristan: I've already joined the convent. I can't even manage to get together with this guy I met online that seems real nice. We had one false start and can't seem to find anymore time. Blech. But, I like being single, so....

Glad to see ya pop in RugBug. I miss the cynacism, its great. Props on the wins by the way, thats frickin' awesome!

I had actually thought about not divulging my knowledge of who he was talking about MSG. I thought, "Well, lets see if he can set it up. I'll show up in someone elses vehicle to see if she even shows up." Then, depending on my mood, I would either go through it or ditch her. But that's just too much of a game and thought it sounds like fun, I just got no energy for it.

Okay, I mentioned how great thought she was and really, I still feel that way. But something came out recently that I have no clue where it came from. Maybe I just wanted sex and was willing to put the SPidey Sense Tingle aside for some sex. I've never done that. It feels good and bad. I feel a little weak for comprimising myself. But I feel good because, well, I'm still a man who wants a woman. Not that I was thinkin' I was gay, but that I was growing further and further away from human feelings. Wierd huh?

EDIT: Oh... I forgot to comment on the problem with internet filters thing... there is a town in England that had all sorts of issues with filters - none of the websites would come up on Google or any other search engine... the problem was in the middle of this town's name was a rather demeaning and particularly offensive 4-letter-word... poor people couldn't log on to the Scunthorpe Library, Scunthorpe School, Scunthorpe Theatre Company or even the Scunthorpe City Council... all were blocked by filters... True story!

Here' another filter story for y'all. Apparently there's a filter out there the looks not for words but images that are questionable. It worked well enough to a point (I believe it may have been beta testing, and I believe it mayhave been a Japanese software company), but when trying to view an article that had pictures of sumo wrestlers, the images got blocked because it was pornographic. Flesh-colored boobie shaped objects were detected. While they actually are flesh-colored boobies, I think that the audience of would porn addicts in this extremely specialized form of titilation would be severely limited. Could be wrong. Might be a real market out there for that. More likely's the case that the software was the one having issues...

Hi!
Thankyou, I have received nothing but warm welcomse from everyone on the entire boards, which shows the calibre of FF fans I guess!

Bit difficult since I'm living in a different time zone to most of ya, but I'll certainly make the effort.

And yeah, it's wrong. My brother makes me search for seeminly innocent phrases sometimes, and WHAM, I get an eyeful...

So I don't break any unwritten rules, is this basically a 'What you're thinking thread' or do i have to pretend to be slightly philosophical?

Hi guys!

*Hugs* to everyone, and welcome to Fitch66! You don't really need to be philisophical to post here, you just ponder, hence the title.

I like to think that I'm neither pessimistic nor optimistic entirely, but I tend to lean towards optimism. If you're pessimistic, not only are you usually unhappy, but it tends to bum out everyone around you too. However, sometimes you need to be pessimistic to be realistic about a situation. Most times, though, it is better for me to be optimistic. I like seeing to nice things in the world more than only focusing on the crappy stuff. Like I said though, too much optimism can be unrealistic and sometimes forced too.

Fitch, yes, this is a very friendly, open group of individuals. They aren't kidding when they say Firefly fans are the shiniest folk in the 'Verse!

There are no real "rules" to posting here...it's kind of a water-cooler type thread. We spend time talking about what's on our minds, etc...most of the time, someone will come up with something to "ponder", and whoever wants to pipes in with their thoughts and observations. So, look for question marks, ask questions of your own, and just have fun.
We do try to keep things as clean as possible, though...there is the odd bit of cursing every now and then, but nothing too bad.

As far as the time-zone difference goes, there are people that post on this thread all throughout the day, so you are bound to run into someone!

Ahhh, okay. You are very nice and helpful to a newbie like myself. Are you a mod or some such?

Anyhow, I should probably get on topic now...

Optimism/pessimism. Well I'm most optimistic when I'm with other people, when I'm alone I can get a bit gloomy, but I think it depends on your mood at any given day really. Bad days I go into spiraling thought patterns of doom that make me think that anything that could go wrong, will go wrong. But then there's the theory that it all happens anyway, y'know, the millions of paralell universes thing.

Evening, ASAFT! I don't get many chances to say hello to you, so "Hi!"

Fitch, I am not a moderator, but I did start this line of threads way, way back. I am sort of a welcome wagon when I can be. These threads belong to everyone that posts.

Welcome Fitch and good to have you.

I have some experience with the scary google results. My students do NAL ( National Academic League) and one part of the competition is a presentation. Students are given the topic a week ahead and research it. Then they are given a question at the match and have 15 min to write a presentation pro or con on the topic.... So once the topic was corporal punishment. When the kids googled that to research at home I got a dozen angry parent phone calls about why I was having their kids search out info on bondage.

Well I am bailing now to go cook dinner and do the final shopping of Christmas ( more toys for Annie and Wyatt because they need them...no seriously they need them LOL)Anyway, I will see y'all tomorrow have lovely evenings

Magda- Sorry I missed you and big hugs my lovely sister. I will email you later

CMH- HUGS you just email me when you get to it and I'll get to baking:)

Tristan- night sweety

LA- HUGS

Rugbug- hope you're on more we miss you HUGS

NV- Just wait, tomorrow you'll run into someone who will want to set you up with a beautiful , gentle, sweet, shy woman named Saffron..whatever you do, don't accept:) HUGS

Everyone I missed ( and there are legion) HUGS and loves and see you later

Pessimist, through and through. When ever I see a silver lining, my first instinct is to look for the cloud. Everything has a catch, nothing is for free, and nothing worthwhile is ever easy.
While this is a damn harsh and gloomy way to be, it's also protected me from a lot of unneeded heartache. I'm always the one in the group pointing out that something too good to be true almost always is, and I'm always the only one who's not surprised when this turns out to be the case.

Ain't I just the chipper one?

Have you decorated yet ?

I am most definately an optimist, much like Kaylee .I always see the best in things and people.Unfortunately I get disappointed more often than not .But I can't stop myself !

Hi ASFT !

Welcome Fitch !

EDIT : James - at least you're never surprised when things go wrong !

HELL'S KITTEN

Hallo, everyone!

Heh. At one of the companies I worked for, we had a "career counselor" come in to "help" us, as this particular company was sold and we were all retained just to shut the place down.

ANYhow, one of the standard questions was "Is the glass half full, or half empty?" as that is, apparently, the One True Question that will induce convulsions of enlightment about one's true nature when one answers it.

My answer was this: "The glass is neither half full nor half empty, you dumb sh**. You only gave me f***ing half of what I f***ing wanted."

The "career counselor" left me alone after that, for which I was thankful; her name was Candy and she liked to hug people. *shudder*

As with Mavourneen (whose name I could never pronounce until I read her profile), I consider myself to be a {very} pessimistic optimist. I've worked in this industry too long to be an optimist (horrid details best saved for another time)... yet I have a bit of this naïve, romantic optimism I can't seem to kill off.

TRAVELER

Hello Everyone:

I have to say I'm pessimistic. Grew up in a disfunctional family and I have an unatural fear of superiors.

Now you guys must have ESP because today was my annual review. What makes it bad is we have to write our own and then turn it in to our supervisor. Of course he lost the one I gave him because of his sloppy desk and I had to make him a fresh copy. What I have discovered about the way he handles reviews is that he is more concerned with the spell and grammer than what I say. So I try to keep it short and sweet.

Back on track. Having studied military history I know so many things can go wrong. I have learned you must be prepared in so many ways before takeing on a campaign. It does not mean I don't take on challenges. I just expect whatever I take on to be difficult. I consider myself lucky if everything goes well.

I have been involved in military gaming for many moons and have witnessed some unbelievable good luck or bad luck, depending which side I was on.

Military games ? Like Risk or Axis & Allies ? My husband loves playing those games .

Unatrual fear of superiors ? I'll turn them into toads for you !

btw - until you mentioned it I didn't realize that Bell Book and Candle was a Christmas movie.I've always thought of it as a witchy movie ! No surprise there I guess.
I even had a small black cat named Pywacket .

Kim Novak is so lovely .

evenin' Imponderables.

ooh ooh RISK. My brothers and their friends get uber-serious when they play it, and physical fights have broken out before over it. (once it was over the color of the army).

Hope you all had a shiny day! :)
