Neil Simon's Murder By Death is my favorite. It's a parody of 40's detective books and movies. Peter Falk, Truman Capote, Peter Sellers and Maggie Smith (Mrs. McGonnegal from Harry Potter) star, among others.

comedies are completely dependent upon your mood and with whom you watch it. some are meant for watching in a theatre with lots of other people. generally speaking, comedies are the lowest form of entertainment imo.

silly? top secret/airplane.

or

the gods must be crazy.

a bit more sophisticated?

try withnail and i. or how to get ahead in advertising.

and i did say "a bit" ;)

If forced to name just one it'd be "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".

But some other funny movies we've found worth buying, in no particular order (mind you, some of our purchases were influenced by our having a 7 year old child):

Shrek
The Princess Bride
Pirates of the Caribbean
Ice Age
Chicken Run
Madagascar
Monty Python's Life of Brian
A Fish Called Wanda
Bull Durham
Galaxy Quest
Dark Star

The last two are probably two of the funniest science fiction movies ever made. Well, funniest intentionally, anyway. (Airplane II might give them a run for the money, but I haven't seen it in years and years.)

I would go with Shannara on Withnail and I. British humour at some of its very best. Watch out for the bit where he drinks lighter fluid...

Also Dogma and Clerks, both by the same director (I forget who) and both funny. If slightly wrong at several points.

And I fully commend doctroid's list aswell.

Cool, I was expecting to get alot of movies I'd already seen but I've only really seen a couple of these. I've heard alot about "The Gods Must Be Crazy" so I think I'll rent it but in the future I'll definitely look at some of these other ones. Also "Super Troopers" and "Club Dread" are both hilarious.

CAPTAINSHINY

Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein is great. Also, Shaun of the Dead.

I would not reccomend Talledega nights. That was the cinematic equivalent of venerial disease. very unpleasant.

"The people who made the show, and the people who saw the show, which is roughly the same number of people, fell in love with it, a little bit too much to let it go, too much to lay down arms when when the battle looked pretty much lost. In Hollywood, people like that are called unrealistic, quixotic, obsessive... In my world, they're called Browncoats."

How about some classics?

A Night at the Opera. Or really any Marx Brothers film but this is probably the flat out funniest.

Young Frankenstein - A nice light early Mel Brooks movie but often with the funny.

Animal House - the pinnacle of crude humor.

As has been stated Airplane - just plain silly.

GLADIATOR32

Sorry to go with the obvious, but:

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
The Mask
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey

Delicatessen is a great dark comedy, but if you ain't a fan of subtitled French films, you may wanna give it a miss

Also, anything staring Adam Sandler is a safe bet for hilarity! The Longest Yard and Little Nicky would be my fav's. Although Billy Madison is bloody funny, too.

I'm surprised nobody's said any of these: Kingpin, There's Something About Mary, Shallow Hal, Dodgeball, A Fish Called Wanda, or any Monty Python movies other than the Holy Grail.

Office Space was great, I have 67 pieces of flare

Ben Stiller's an automatic funny (same with Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn sometimes).

You can't talk about comedy without the Marx Brothers:
Duck Soup
Horsefeathers
A Day at the Races

I'd also repeat votes for:
Dodgeball (featuring Alan Tudyk)
A Knight's Tale (Alan Tudyk again)
Galaxy Quest
The Princess Bride

I somehow forgot this one, which we've also shelled out money to own:

L.A. Story

Not as successful a movie as it should've been, I think -- very funny, sweet, slightly dated but dead-on lampoon of circa 1990 L.A.

I did mention "A Fish Called Wanda" -- almost anything with Kevin Kline in it is worth a shot.

Enthusiastic second for "Blazing Saddles", "Groundhog Day", and almost any Marx Brothers.

In fact "Groundhog Day" and "L.A. Story" would make an interesting double feature -- both are romantic comedy fantasies starring comic actors (who featured on "Saturday Night Live" in the 1970s) as TV weathermen!
