SERGEANTX

The last week or so has been a pretty crazy time for Browncoats. The official fox board closing without so much as a two minute warning threw the community into a state of disarray. Not much point in dwelling on the asinine nature of closing a board of that size without any kind of notice to the members. Three letters sums it up. The result, however, is something we're still dealing with.

The influx of new members here at Fireflyfans.net caused more than a little stress on the board and its regulars. Some of this stress was unfortunately vented in the direction of some of the newcomers. Already reeling from being fox'd out of their home, the former official board members were ridiculed and berated for their ignorance of our typical way of doing things here. The end result is that our board has developed quite a negative reputation amongst the former official board members.

I don't think anyone is thrilled with the way things went down. It was ugly and regrettable and something I think all of us would like to let fade into the past. Speaking personally however, I don't like the idea of our board being looked at so negatively in the Firefly Fan community. I survey most every Firefly page and message board I can find, as time permits, and I can't quite explain how it feels to see us referred to as snobs or elitist jerks or even "anal retentive Nazi's" . The reason it bother's me so much is that it's not true.

I've made some good friends here and I know them to be open friendly people who all share a love for a truly remarkable television series. Haken, in particular, is a true 'Big Damn Hero'. Its rare to find a site ran by someone with so much skill and enthusiasm. You might also notice that there are no ads anywhere on this site. Haken does all of this on his own and routinely provides interesting content and top-notch support without any compensation. It's particularly unfair for him to be seen in a negative light because of a few unfortunate incidents.

I'm going to post a link to this thread on some of the other Firefly boards. I'm hoping this will give us a chance to show them that we value their input and welcome their presence. Anything you care to add would be appreciated.

LOTV

Right... its been a tough situation on everyone here... Some have lost their homes, others feel as if their homes have been invaded...

Let us all be patient, and hope for the best in all this. We all have two mutual similarities here, no matter what side we originally came from:

1. We're all Browncoats

2. We all hate FOX.

Let us join under those banners, and put aside our other differences, to band together, and create a society of all our individual beings(es?).

Sergeant X,

I respect you and I thank you for your effort. I was at fff before finding the OB. The style of the community is just very different. That was why I asked Haken for our own section. I knew some would feel invaded.

I know there are really good friendly browncoats here. Sorry for the bad rap some are giving you.

I will always say when mentioning fff, Haken rocks! He is great and I really enjoy the site.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I applaud your efforts Sergeant X, and I think it is a step in the right direction.

I do think that point fingers or laying blame, even vaguely might act to stir up hard feelings and more of the "venting" that went on those first few days after the OB was shut down by those chimps at FOX.

Rather than dwell on the cause, let's focus on what is important, Firefly and the FF Fans. As FFP wrote, we should all be rallying together right now. United, we are a voice that can not be ignored, even by those simpletons at FOX.

I never saw this thread when it first rolled around. Great idea Sarge! And once again, Welcome To All Browncoats, from all boards, who have chosen to come here to Haken's board.
I realized only when the OB closed down that groups from other boards don't call themselves Browncoats, they refer to themselves with different names. I can't remember what those names are, they were shiny. (the fog clears a little) I never went to any other Firefly fan sites except this one, so how could I know? I think it's great to expand our 'verse with new names and ideas.

Lunatic Fringe...I know you're out there...

Hey Sarge! I came over to say hello to all of you. I had to make a concerted effort to navigate this board. *L* The only forum I have ever looked in or participated in was the FOX Firefly & then the generic Fox Forum. This format is very difficult for me. Pitiful, I know. **Change is good. Change is good.** I have sneaked over here for JPEGS before though ;)

Anyway...I just want to say "Hi" to all of you & tell you I was never treated badly here. Or maybe I was....hmmmmm....I posted once here a long time ago - about sending eps to the troops. Something I still want to organize after the DVD release. But I could never locate my thread after I posted it! Again...pitiful. AND, I would never generalize based on the behavior of a few.)

That's all for now. I think it's enough since you can all see I am a babbling idiot already! I'll try to stop by from time to time & become a more centrist Browncoat.

What is the "signature"? Is that what appears in white text next to your names? How do I create one?

Thanks, Sarge! I've always been more of an "OBer" than a "FFFans.net-er" (okay, that doesn't really work). But I've felt welcomed here from when I first joined many moons ago, and still when the OB closed. I'm happy I missed any friction!

Am still a bit of a newbie here myself, so this could be wrong but...

The white text next to your name is the tag, the signature is the bit that appears at the end of the post (I'm a useless example because I haven't thought of anything pithy to put yet... )

So using the good Sergeant as a better example - his signature is '"..and here's to all the dreamers, may our open hearts find rest." -- Nanci Griffith' and his tag is "There are 10 kinds of people in the world, those who understand binary, and those who don't"

To set them if you go to your profile (either via the link at the bottom of a post you've written or from the 'My Firefly' link at the top of the home page (then go to edit profile)

I think you must be able to change your signature for individual posts using the box underneath the 'your response' on the post reply screen.

And welcome!

GIRLIE

I posted here long before I found the fox forum. I still visit here for information but I made friends and posted at the Fox Firefly forum. Lets face it we got a rotten reception everywhere. Some folks took it hard, others not so much. I myself saw nothing here that bothered me. I will continue to come here...or anywhere else I want to, but I am most comfortable with the fox forum right now. This has really been my first experience with posting and the internet as a a toy rather then a tool.
Thanks for the message here and on the Fox forum. I think things have mellowed at this point and hard feelings have past. At least that is my sense of it.
We are attempting to influence and recruit X-Files fans who also lost there board. It makes us stick out less.

I'm quite new here but feel very at home. I think y'all have done a fantastic job at this site. I feel real bad that there was tension. I hope that is well behind everyone.

Keep up the good work!

Browncoats forever no matter where.

Sarge, I just want you to know that I've been doing a lot of soul searching and I even quit drinking for a day.

After a lot of thought, I decided to give you a second chance. You asked for it, and I believe you deserve it. I'll give you another chance, so help me God.

Thanks, Sarge, I hope this helps bridge some of the distance between the two communities I love and respect.

This was my first board to join last year and I spent most of my on-line FF time here because of the great job Haken did in keeping us updated. And then the significant technical knowledge and generosity of the other members.

I gradually shifted over to the OB for the light-hearted chats and shindig plans with frequent visits here for the "harder" stuff.

Two different communities with a lot to offer...they complement each other and share many common goals so I hope we can bridge over the momentary differences.

As I'm watching, Adam Baldwin, as shifted over to Allison's prospero board http://forums.prospero.com/firefly. This will probably cause most of the OB group to head that direction. I'm not sure if Nathan Fillion has posted anywhere else but that would draw the "Fillionaires".

Anyway I enjoy the diversity and appreciate the very creative and smart people here at FFFnet!

Thank you Sarge. I'm a newbie from the OB. Is there is primer on proper behavior for FFF? I don't want to join the list of ugly-OBers.

Not really SIFLYMAN, most everyone around here is pretty friendly. Just don't look them in they eye or make any sudden movements. You'll be fine.
