I got the idea from someone else on the boards and the more I thought about, the more sense it made to tap into the vast resources of this forum.

Here's the situation: I was fired a year ago from a job I had for 17 years (under suspicous circumstances. The EEOC is currently investigating them). I was not able to find a job in the 6 months allotted for Unemployment, so I've spent the last 6 months living off my savings. I've not been able to find any work that will accommodate my situation...

I am not able to work in a conventional manner because I have a disease known as Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. This disease has no cure and not much in the line of treatment except for total avoidance of all perfumes and chemicals that cause me to have reactions. These reactions range from (on the totally mild side) burning, irritated eyes, to loss of cognitive function (can't think, can't remember things -- basically I turn into a drooling moron). The majority of the time, I just feel like I have the flu all day, every day (painfully swollen sinuses, congestion, achy, etc.). It's pretty hard to get through a work day when you feel horrible all the time. Not to mention do a good job.

So, per the advice of my Doctor and Unemployment, I am in the process of trying to get Disability. Bad thing about this is, it takes forever to get through the system. I've already been turned down twice (which is the norm) and I'm heading for my hearing which will probably award me disability but that won't happen until next year). My lawyer has told me I shouldn't work - he has the same disease - and if I do find work, it will cannot pay more than 800 a month GROSS.

Meanwhile, I had to move out of the house I was renting because I would have gone broke living there. So, my parents wouldn't let me come back home, and a (possibly soon-to-be former) friend took me in 6 months ago. I was not given any time frames for how long I would be there, nor were any other expectations spelled out. Yesterday, I found a note on the fridge that asked when I'm moving out.

This basically means he wants me to move out.

So, this is where you guys come in, if you can help:

Does anyone on this board know of any jobs that can be done from home that don't require college degrees or do you know of any organization that can help someone like me who needs a place to live until I get disability? Keep in mind I cannot be exposed to perfume, perfumed toiletries, air fresheners, car/truck exhaust, and pretty much any cleaning chemical as well as paint, new carpet, etc. (yes, my life is a real joy)

I live in northern Illinois - McHenry County near McHenry.

Since my parents turned me down once already, I don't forsee them changing their minds now, despite the fact that I'm basically facing homelessness.

I really hope you guys have some ideas for me, and I appreciate you taking the time to read this over. If you have any questions, etc. please feel free to ask.

hmmm You might consider being a test proctor . Basically a warm body who sits in a testing room ( which has nothing in it but desks and chairs) and watches kids take tests.
You might want to contact your local disability resource centers and they can help with the housing and help you find jobs too. Here's the contact
