SINTWAR

Hi all,

Well, my story about becoming a fan is probably a bit different than most.

I had never heard of FireFly before I heard about the movie. I happen to work as a graphic designer for a large entertainment media wholesaler, who deals in movies, music games and the like.

I do all of the web promotions, and get to kind of pick whatever I want to promote out of a selection of new product that we have.

I saw a Serenity ad and thought it looked cool, so I made the promotion. I had never seen it before, but before I made the promo, I watched the trailer, and thought it looked amazing.

I knew I had to own that movie.

The next time I happened to be in Target, I walked through the movies section, and saw the Serenity DVD. I had no idea what it was really, I just thought the trailer looked really cool. So I bought it.

Now one thing you should know about me, is that I HATE those kinds of TV shows. They all kind of have the same low budget stench about them. Everything from Stargate SGI to Xena. I think it is just the acting. The only show like those I ever took the least bit of interest in was Battlestar Galactica, and I really only watched a few episodes of that.

So I get home, and I (not knowing what I was getting myself into) popped the DVD in, and anxiously started the movie...

I was not impressed. You have got to be kidding me. This is a major motion film with the same stench as one of those damn shows I hate... But I bit my lip and continued to watch.

My wife would glance over from time to time and ask me "What is that garbage you are watching?".

My response was "shhh..." ;)

The more I watched, the more I enjoyed it. I was still a bit upset about the TV series feel about it, but I loved the story, acting/actors and the special effects were actually pretty damn good.

After the movie had ended, I proceeded to watch the bonus features. I listened to the guy (still don't know his name) talk about the TV series, and how it had been canceled, (I KNEW IT!!!!) :P but how it had a large community who loved the TV show (I didn't pay much attention to what the show was called.) which would play a part in my next accidental discovery.

Now as I said before, I work for this big entertainment company. Our department holds a quarterly meeting every... well... Quarter. :)

In those meetings, they allow everyone to walk up and take an item from seemingly random selections from the warehouse.

They usually have a varied assortment of movies and music laying on a table, and allow you to pick one item, which you get to keep for free.

I was the 4th person in line, and I was already upset that the guy in front of me snagged the Lord of the Rings box set before I could get it.

So I am looking around the pile to see if there was anything else I might like. I see the FireFly complete series box set, which caught my attention. I didn't know what it was, and I did not recognize the characters on the box. All I knew is it was a sci fi looking thing, and the people behind me were already starting to grab things from the table. I had to make a fast descision.

I didn't see anything else that really caught my attention, so I grabbed the FireFly box. Just in time too, becuse one of the people behind me had already made his descision, and was reaching for it. I snagged it a fraction of a second before he had the chance, and as he let out of shout of disappointment, I grinned, and said "It's a damn shame. I don't even know what it is" ;)

I wasn't too happy about it though. I knew it was one of those damn TV series things that I can't stand, but I thought what the hell. This thing is probably worth a chunk of change. I'll try to watch it, and then sell it on Ebay.

So I get home, pop in disc one, and start to watch. Yup. Just like I thought, one of those lame, no talent, half assed TV series. But again, I bit my lip, and watched.

As it turns out, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I was actually hooked. I watched one episode after the other over a period of about 3 days, and once I had watched the last one, I wanted more.

Now, I still didn't tie the connection between the series, and the movie I had already seen. Serenity was the last thing on my mind. Even the fact that the name of the ship was Serenity didn't spark the memory of the movie.

So I fire up the bonus features, and the guy starts talking about how the show was canceled, but thanks to the large community of fans, was brought back to life...

HUH??? That sounds VERY familliar... I ran to my DVD collection, and sifted through until I found the Serenity DVD. I pulled it out, and looked over the cover.

HOLY SH**!! I can't believe it!...

So that is the story thus far. After that, I Googled FireFly and Serenity and found this place. The thriving community of fans he had spoken about.

I look forward to watching Serenity again now that I am completely hooked on FireFly. :)

And I won't be selling the box set on Ebay anytime soon either. ;)

That was a SHINY story. There's mudders milk in the galley and I must say picking up the FF series was a stroke of luck for you IMO.

TRAVELER

Welcome Sintwar:

You do have a different story than we usually hear, but I see the results are the same. It seems once someone has watched this show they get some sort of bug. We all have it and believe me when I say we are glad you found our site. If you have already looked around our site you see we have forums to discuss anything on your mind and to have fun. Hope to you post and be a part of this verse.

STANNIS

Welcome to the Group.

I am new as well. I had never heard of the movie or the series, but someone mentioned that one of the actors (Nathan Fillion) was from Edmonton Canada(where I live).

I still don't know if that is true, but I imagine this is the site to find out if my friend was right. He didn't say anything more than that, though as we were interupted or something... I can't remember.

So I pick the movie up at the DVD store and proceed to watch it - I thought it was awesome!! My next thought was - Why hadn't I heard of this, i would watched in theatres had I known about it.

So anyways I was shopping in the summer for somethnig and I see the Complete series and I recognized the cast so I said "what the heck" and picked it up.

OMG - how come I never heard of THIS. I would have watched it every week religiously. And why did it get CANCELLED! An intelligent SCI-FI and western all in one with great actors and a plausible story and agood effects and it gets cancelled.

Man am I bummed.

Why does it seem that only the good shows that I like get cancelled - what a farce. Can I do anything to get it going again???

LOL
I like your story (but I would never call our special effects cheesy, Zoid does a great job!)
but I have to post because you have a long way to go to catch up around here; things not to be missed:

the unaired script:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/feature.asp?f=45

watch the R. Tam Session vids: http://www.hittarivertam.nu/

and buy the 'Serenity' comics published by Dark Horse, the second comic series will come out next Spring.

and I highly recommend Joss Whedon's 'Serenity: The Official Visual Companion' which has more in the scrip than made it to the screen (so it is a VERY fun read)
besides it has story boards, drawings by the costume and set designers, and lots of production memos which are must reads (really reveal everything Joss wants in this film, and how patiently he feels about it all).

what else am I forgetting?
oh yeah...don't miss out on this (huge spoilers):

DONCOAT

Welcome, Sintwar and Stannis!

You're going through the same set of feelings as the rest of us here, so don't feel like you're in this all alone. The Browncoats can see each other through anything. Seriously.

All we can do now is share the word about Firefly/Serenity with as many people as possible. The fan base keeps growing exponentially. Eventually they'll have to take notice.

And with the holiday season fast approaching, you know what to put under your friends' and family's tree, now don't you?

I'm pointin' right at it!

Welcome, Stannis. Yes, our Captain Mal (Nathan Fillion) comes from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Right now there is a campaign to raise money for his birthday next March. The gifts will benefit the Fringe Theatre Adventures (FTA) at Edmonton. FollowMal has a thread set up that tells more about it and the "Good Works -Keep the Fringe Flying" project. http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=25233

SIRI

Welcome, Stintwar, from one recent convert to another. I found Firefly recently, too, altho I rented Serenity this summer and liked it. Took me a bit longer to discover Firefly - and, like the rest of the folks here, very quickly became enchanted with the world of the 'verse.

I've never joined any kind of fanclub before either. It's a great place to hang out. They're a great bunch of folks. They'll be offering you strawberries, mudder's milk and a Browncoat of your own pretty soon - if they haven't already.

Thanks for sharing your most shiny story.

Wow that was a lot of response! :)

Well, I have never been much of a forum junkie myself, but I thought it was pretty funny how it all played out.

Thanks for the welcome, and I will be happy to back you all up when the feds start sniffin around.

Welcome! My story is somewhat similar to yours--watched the movie first, though in the theatre, thought it was okay, then a friend sat me down and made me watch the show...and it grew on me like a fungus. A really GOOD fungus! This is the first fan group I've participated in, and it's a great experience. I've even written fan fiction now...something that never occurred to me to do before! I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself here.

Um, sure'n he does, but he didn't do the effects on Firefly. You're thinking of Zoic. Same people who are currently working on Battlestar Galactica.

(Zoid is a poster around here. Haven't seen him in a while though, he get pinched by the feds or something?)

Oh is my face red! I got Zoid (one of our fireflyfans) mixed up with Zoic (the genius special effects people, I actually got to meet someone from Zoic at a convention and they did a great presentation)
