Am I the only one who hates it when Firefly is compared to Star Wars? Don’t get me wrong Star Wars is great but Firefly is its own unique show! It also seems like Firefly is considered a lesser show among Star Wars... Ah it annoys me so!

I have not come across this comparison in all honesty. Not surprised either... Star Wars was, arguably, the first Sci-Fi everything that follows will at some point be compared.

In fact, that is my new theory: the first of anything will at some point be compared with all following derivatives. Subject to the usual but indescribable until they happen exceptions, amendments, evolutions, and any other loophole you wish to add.

And if someday on some little piss-ant moon/My hand is a little too slow, or my aim a little bit off/At least I’ll go down fighting, not lying abed surrounded by quacks - "Sir Warrick" by Geezer

D'you know I've not heard that. Most of my friends consider it as a live version of Cowboy Bebop.

Yeah. That Joss, comparing Serenity to the Millennium Falcon. Where does he get off?

I like it when we get compared to Star Wars. Mostly because the critics get it right.
Reviews found at rottentomatoes.com

That said, George Lucas could learn a thing or two from Whedon. "Serenity" flies with sass and spirit, qualities that have been in palpably short supply in that "Star Wars" series since, well, "Star Wars."
Jan Stuart, Newsday.com

The cleverest, crankiest, wittiest, wildest, and most character-driven sci-fi adventure in 25 years; it's the best outer-space trip I've been on since the empire struck back.
Scott Weinberg, eFilmCritic.com

I can't believe I am saying this, but I think Serenity could be the new Star Wars.
Willie Waffle, WaffleMovies.com

A lot more sweaty fun than the last three overhyped, sterile, for-dorks-only Star Wars cartoons.
Connie Ogle, Miami Herald

Like watching the original Star Wars for the first time, or better yet, watching The Empire Strikes Back... Mal is a guy who would shoot Greedo first.

Ok Star Wars, Serenity. They both happen out in space. That's where the comparison should end IMO. Guess it won't though.

Anyhoo although seems Joss didn't want to make another "Star" something (Star Wars, Star Trek) Firefly is a bit of a stretch in having si/fi ppl drawn to your show. Alright, I do love the title now, but it's only because I know what it's all about and know what it means. Do I wish Joss had chosen another name? Nope, although having Darth Vader's voice in a commercial saying " Malcolm.....Malcolm, come to the dark side. Wait a minute..you're already there. Never mind." might have attracted more viewers.

If ppl are comparing Serenity to SW. Well it's like comparing puppies to kittens. They are both sweet and cuddly, and they taste good with chips :)

Now that I think about it, any time Firefly or Serenity gets mentioned - especially with something as well known as Star Wars, it gets more exposure to people who might not have heard about the movie or the series. So in that light, I think it's a good thing. It's smarter and funnier - in my opinion than Star Wars - altho the very first one was great fun!

I like it getting compared too. As long astheypoint out ALL the differences toshow Firefly is a way different animal than an, um, falcon?

A local reviewer said Serenity is the cure for Star-Wars-prequel stress disorder.

Look at it this way: Wouls you rather be folks say, " They're almost as good as the New York Yankees. "; or, " They're almost as bad as The Bad News Bears."?

Star Wars is still the big dog in this yard. Nice to think you can compete with him in some way, 'stead of hiding under the porch like the Taco Bell dog.

Star Wars was new and exciting in it's day. Even if it's a bit like a pale obese child now it was once what Serenity is to us. As long as people are talking about Serenity at all I'm happy.

Although it is a bit annoying.......

The Star Wars prequels killed Star Wars; wouldn't wanna see our beloved Firefly compared to that.

Once, here on our very own fff.net, someone came up with a cute title for the Serenity sequel: "Serenity II: Revenge of the Sis." Now, that was downright funny. :) Other comparisons to Star Wars, not so much.

I think the reason why there is a comparison is SW was the first Sci fi anything that showed things are not pristine clean. Things get grungy, dirty & used. It was the first to show more of a reality of what things would be like as far as actually living in the 'verse.
