Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh Talk THE HOBBIT

11/19/06, 10:34 pm EST - Xoanon

Moments ago we received this email from Peter Jackson and his crew down in New Zealand, take a look...it does not bode well for THE HOBBIT: Dear One Ringers, As you know, there's been a lot of speculation about The Hobbit. We are often asked about when or if this film will ever be made. We have always responded that we would be very interested in making the film - if it were offered to us to make. [More]
Update - Wow! Ringers are peeved! And we hear you! The TORn staff will come up with a plan and report back asap!

CAPTURE

I too just read this announcement.

How on EARTH does New Line think they can make a LOTR's prequel w/o Pete and Fran???? They made New Line a trillion dollars and now just because Pete and Fran want to resolve an accounting issue before going into contracts over the new movie (which seems like a really good idea) New Line is just writting them off! Do they think the fans will stand for this???

I personally will be boycotting any future LOTR's movies that do not involve Pete and Fran (and Phillippa for that matter...). It is just plain wrong for New Line to be doing this to them! And it also seems really childish as well!

Keep holding,

Capture

I`m more worried about the references to "The Hobbit and the LOTR prequel".
What are they talking about? There is no LOTR prequel other than The Hobbit unless somebody is thinking of pinching some script ideas from parts of The Silmarrillion (which is clearly unfilmable in its entirity).
Looks like some Hollywood As have got dollar signs in their eyes and are about to screw things up while trying to make a fast buck.

DREAMWALKER

"The LOTR Prequel"? I'm sorry but that sends bad images of some really really crappy mini-series where they show select scenes from the Silmarilion or the Books of Lost Tales. The idea of turning something like that into a movie is even worse. I really want them to make The Hobbit, but only if it's done by Jackson and the rest of the people who made the LOTR films. Seriously, I don't think the fans of Jackson's movies (myself included) would be happy with a version of the Hobbit being made by anyone else.

Wash: This landing is gonna get pretty interesting
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: Oh God, of God, we're all going to die?

Could be worse. They could be talking sequel, "Lord of the Rings II: Sauron's back and this time it's personal."

Trouble is, I have an uncomfortable feeling they have something like that in mind.

I would love to see the Hobbit made as long as Peter Jackson has NOTHING to do with it.

For years they said the LOTR was unfilmable, and they where right, he never should have tried it, they took the greatest book ever written with more depth than anything before or after and transferred it into a great movie (don't get me wrong one of my favourite films) but it is nothing compaired to what it should have been. and for that i shall never forgive peter jackson. also in the making of the long and the short of it they descibe Jackson as the "writer" of LOTR, how arrogant can anyone be?

LOTR is great for the way the story builds and the carachters have their traits and you really get to know them (much the same success as Joss had with firefly) in the films it is so slap dash and full of stupid holes and love interests that I sat there outraged most of the time, and he missed the key point about Hobbits, that they resist magic, hence why Frodo could carry the ring so long, and they missed out Tom Bombadil who IMHO is awsome just for the fact that his own magic is so strong in his grounds that he doesn't care about the magic of the ring, shows there is much more going on in Middle Earth than that story, and don't get me started on Arwen!!!

I agree Jackson may not be the best choice to adapt the hobbit. Not because of any of his missteps in LOTR but because the Hobbit is a fundamentally lighter work and Peter is a bit on the dark side. The same director that couldn't work Bombadil into Fellowship probably can't get a reasonable handle on There and Back Again.

As for Jackson's missteps in the trillogy most of them are the result of his trying to bring the Aragorn/Arwen story into the main narrative rather than leaving it in the backstory as the professor did. Some of that works and some of it doesn't. (Flirting with Eowen? In what universe does that make sense?) The only crime I will not forgive the man for is, "Go home Sam." I almost screamed, "Damn' you to the Uttermost Void Peter Jackson." when I saw that bit in the theater. I held it back though so I won't be going to the special hell.
