Jonny hon I teach junior high...not much on this planet creeps me out. and you're adorable:)
Had to go break up a fight.Hand hurts now as I had to physically pull the guys apart ( fight had gone to ground) and shake them and then physically drag them to the office. Gave after school detention to every kid that watched the fight. Which should discourage that:)

I have 5 bookshelves with pretty much every genre you can think of except romance. 2 in bedroom 3 in the living room.

I read far too many books as a kid to pick just one that had an impact on me but I loved The Chronicles of Narnia and A Wrinkle in Time.

Whenever anyone asks me a question I say what I think no matter what the subject is. I do not mince words. I'm known for that, "You want an honest opinion go to Whim (just substitute my real name for Whim)."

A path in life? I think I have one figured out but not I'm quite sure. I think I see the trailhead though. Took me long enough!

Did I miss anything?

Women in gloves. Thanks for the jumpstart JQ.

GND and BabySis are due back the 29th. They get to go to some dinner party (both get to shop for appropriate clothes for the party) and I guess they're flyin' to LA for a Korn concert. So yeah, two weeks.

Oh, yes. The honest opinion. I knew I missed one. Thanks, Whim.

I am really big on diplomacy, due no doubt to my 90 pound weakling status growing up. I can be blunt (especially if it's funny), and I will be forthright with my friends. But inside I can still feel pangs of "should I really say that?" way too often.

About the 90 pound thing. In 7th or 8th grade gym class one of the "rotations" was wrestling and we all got weighed to be put into our weight classes. I was at least a foot taller than the 3 or 4 other guys in mine. I weighed 87 lbs (at about 5 1/2 ft). Three of my lab-mixes weigh more than that.

My sister is outweight by her dog...actually almost all of us are. He's the great dane whose pic I put up and he weights 125 pounds and his head is even with my shoulder ( he's tall for a dane) and ( though this is typical for the breed) the biggest coward ever. Scooby Doo had it right Great Danes are too scared to do anything:)

Evening all . Just saying a quick hello before dinner.

I went on a class trip today & had to oversee around 50 6 year olds while we saw a musical version of Dr.Seuss' Horton Hears A Who. Very cute production, but way too loud for a college auditorium.

I'm relating this to the book discussion ! Dr.Suess was & is a huge influence in my life.I had most of his books before I had children. I cried when he passed away & I was 17 ! He's funny ,and creative in such an original way.Not to mention the source of many a drinking games.Try reading one of his books drunk & see what I mean.

Another book series that influenced me was the Wizard of Oz books. Also the Narnia series & Like Whimsy mentioned -A Wrinkle In Time as well. Looks like I've always enjoyed stories about other verses.

Anyway, I'mm off to cook dinner .I'll be in the oub later though. After today I need a large drink.

If anyone needs me I will be quietly beating my head on my desk. Had to break up another fight ( now I want to know whose been putting extra testosterone in the drinking fountain in the boys gym) and then spent an hour wrangling a large group of boisterous kids during after school program ( without help) and now I've discovered I told my mom I'd go to a play with her ( chick play Pride and Prejudice to make things worse) so I can't even go and rest...ARGH!!!!!!!!!! ok heading out for the day.

Mmm, I'm talking to a friend who's on the verge of leaving town with his girlfriend to avoid being shot, or possibly to avoid being arrested for shooting someone else. That's kind of up in the air right now, I guess it depends on who gets to who first.

Testosterone... I'm thinking it's CRAZY pills... that make people CRAZY.

Oh my, sometimes I feel like a lurker because it takes me so long to read through the daily posts. Great thread - you all make me laugh and cry. What a great group.

JQ, your pics crack me up!

Thanks, Magda, Mavoureen, and Tristan, for mentioning my cabinets. It was really fun to do, and I'm surrounded by words of wisdom.

Tristan, I don't know if you want it, but I found the quote you were referring to:
"We, today, stand on the shoulders of our predecessors who have gone before us. We, as their successors, must catch the torch of freedom and liberty passed on to us by our ancestors. We cannot lose in this battle."
Benjamin E. Mays

My favorite childhood book was "I Can Fly." It's about a little girl that tries everything. Hmm, yes, it probably did mold me. My favorite book that I read in high school was "Razor's Edge." Hmm, yes, it probably molded me, too.

I don't know if I had a strong sense of where I was going when I was younger, but looking back it's easy to see how my choices in life led me to where I am.

PHOENIXROSE

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Morning all
Time to play catchup. Ok, one window for responding, one for reading and here we go...
So, is it my imagination and/or sleep deprivation, or am I the only woman who cuts people out of my life because they rub me totally the wrong way? Interesting...
Mavs, I most men I've dated have had prettier hair than me. I don't know why so many men have such pretty hair, but it seems to be a fact of life. In my stupid youth, I was a sucker for long/soft/pretty hair. I still like it a whole lot, but consider it secondary to more important features.
And Tristan, you looked good with long hair and a little beard. At least I think so.
MsG, I can't really say any books read in childhood had a huge impact on my identity. Believe it or not, I didn't learn to read properly until fourth grade. My mom read to me a lot, I loved stories, and I could fumble over a few books, but I couldn't read very well. One day someone got me a comic book. An Archie comic book, in fact. And then another, and another, and another. Within three months, I could read way above my grade level. It was strange. Perhaps Archie helped me form my identity in a way because I repeatedly said "I don't want to be as stupid as these people." But the books that have spoken to me the most, given me strange ideas about the world, whose underlying themes (if not some of the shallower interactions to add tension) shaped my ideas on interaction and how the world could be, should be, and sometimes is, was a trilogy I read in ninth grade; the Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop. I've read it countless times since and tried to deconstruct why it means so much to me. I've got a lot of it worked out, but it won't make a lot of sense to people who haven't read them (almost everyone) and my post is gonna be long enough I'm sure
The question, of course, is whether it actually molded me or just touched me and clarified a few things. I think the ideas were already there, and something about those books just brought them slowly into focus.
NVG, that is a pretty gun. I really, really need to get me a gun.
And oh yeah!
*shakes NVG*
As soon as that girl gets back, you say something to her! As soon as you see her, you tell her how much you missed her, you hear me? You tell her that you don't like being away from her and are fair certain you're madly in love with her! (okay, maybe not that one; I know you don't wanna freak her out...) You tell her that from now on you wanna be the one to take these trips with her! Or something!
*shakes NVG again*
'Kay, sorry. No, not really, but you know what I mean. Sorry about the, uh, shaking and stuff.
And you better see this when you get back on, too!

Books which formed me...have to go with the Tolkien thing. The Hobbit at the age of six. And, for some reason, Robert Graves 'I, Claudius' - it's probably why I studied history. And I read 'Dune' quite early on, too. People kept buying me 'nice' children's books, Blyton, the 'Anne' books, but I preferred Dahl.

Hence career path - (very) frustrated writer. A variety of day jobs getting in the way of the Real Thing.

Can we form a support group? In my case the day job physically gets in the way - I'm prone to RSI and I spent most of this year virtually unable to type outside work including two months completely unable to even use a mouse. I'm now 80,000 words of handwritten copy behind... things are picking up now and I'm catching up a few thousand every night, but still...

MAGDALENA

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

Hello Everyone!!

I feel exactly the same way at times VerseExplorer... am I lurking when I am hungrily reading all my friends ponderances but waiting til the end to reply...?? The bittersweet irony in this is that I get to the end and cannot remember what I was longing to say by the time I get there!!

Honesty - I simply cannot lie - my best friend will tell you that I get so embarassed and guilty that I tend to blurt things out that she didn't even realise I was being circumspect about... My biggest dilema is when I see a play or read something that is not really that good but the people or person responsible for it asks my oppinion - I have to be so very careful with what I say so that I do not hurt/offend anyone, without complimenting something I could not honestly recommend! On the other hand if someone is looking for my honest oppinion of something that really matters I take a deep breath and tell them how I see it no matter how difficult that might be... and usually they forgive me and still seem to want to be my friend!

HUGE HUGS NVG!! Oh dear - the tyrany of distance eh... we're all here for you - as I think has been said! Loving that Flixter thing too!! Thanks Honey!! ..Oh - did you know that Monica Belushi is also Australian?

Penguin!! Wow - is McQ Denozo to your Gibbs now?? You have all the best emotes!

Eloisa!! I should have made an exception for 'comfort books' too! I have a few of those myownself... Good call!

SpaceANGL & Mavourneen (hugs Darlin' - looks like I just missed you!) ... isn't Vinterdraken somewhere like Finland?? That might be who you are thinking of - he used to be around a lot more than he is these days...

Tristan you are forgiven my qing ren... and next time she offers - make sure she invites me too!! Oh - and yes, Tristan, I'm still a Way Southern Belle!!

Traveler... we're having a freakish, once-in-ten-years cold snap! Did you send the Wisconsin weather down here?? ...and I have to be doing somehting with my hands most of the time - unless I am exhausted, or holding a book! I usually write, make jewellery, work on my photo albums (scrapbooking) do mending or 'whatever' when I am watching a DVD or TV show...

You're all talking about re-enactments and such - I have to find something over here to keep me amused!! ...or add one of those to my ever-growing list of things to experience whilst in the USA!

My Darling MsG!! How are you Li'l sis? - you have had an eventful day... take care of yourself sweetheart! And if they've hurt your bappin' hand - just say the word and I'll be over to defend you!! and 'Gone with the Wind is another of my favourites - have you read MArgaret Mitchell's biography by Anne Tyler? It is called 'The Road to Tara'... good reading!! I cannot believe I am actually going to 'Atlanta!'

...and your ponderable - I loved and read the 'Laura Ingalls Wilder' book at least 10 times each before I reached high school (about 12 years old) and also grew up on 'Anne of Green Gables' among other L M Montgomery books, Mums copies of 'The Abbey Girls' series by Elsie J Oxenham, and C S Lewis too! I used to think that Laura was intended to be my best friend - except that she was born 100 years too early! Most of these girls/women were very caring, artistic, ethical and lived in a world which didn't exist in my day - I suspect both my love of history and a lot of my sense of fairness and compassion were from these books... Mavourneen - Oh my!! You're another Laura-friend!! I gave my 10 year old niece the entire set last Christmas!!

RIMG!! Thanks for the recommendations - I have meant to read 'Stranger in a Strange Land' for a while - but never seem to get around to it! 'The Hiram Key' is another one I will definitely read one day!!

Hi James!! Keep warm Honey!

JohnnyQ - your Toni sounds like a woman after my own heart - and yest - my gorgeous MsG has all those qualities too! Children seem to be something you've either got the knack with... or not! I adore them! (or hadn't you worked that out yet peoples??)

Whim!! I will always look to you for an honest opinion Honey!!

Little Albatross!!! Big hugs Darlin'!! I love the sound of your day out... though it's a pity the acoustics weren't better! I love Dr Seuss... though I often have to 'edit' the way I tell them for the Americanisations in them... (eg:zed instead of zee in his wonderful ABC book...) I can still recite several of his books by heart!!

Hi Neko-chan[/v]!! How's life in the beautiful Hawai'ian Islands?? Take good care of yourself Sweetie!

Mei Mei!!! Thank you fro the suggestion about the two windows for responding - I am udsing it a little too effectively I think - this might be my longest post of all time!! 'Black Jewels Trilogy' by Anne Bishop... got it on my list to be read... after I've finished these wonderful books I'm loving by a certain writer by the name of Victoria Hanley!!!!!

Ah... yes.... I think I'm done.... sorry for the long post! I just ove you all way too much!!
