visited my father last weekend and the only wireless access I could get from his house was the local high school. But what did I see when I tried to log into FFF.net?

Note the category/reason for blockage -- we are bad, bad people.

That's not as bad as one place I worked.

We had some "open access" computers so we could surf the net on our break and lunch times. No problem, I hear you say, good for them...

Most of us only wanted them so we could check our e-mail during the day, but it always blocked our attempts to access Hotmail, or Yahoo.

The reason?

"This website category is restricted: category occult"

Of course it's occult you stupid machine! It's a Pagan site!!! That's the whole point!!!

Nope, just accessed them from work. It's one of the categories automatically blocked by our software.

And the exact name for the category was "Occult/Cult" - so very nice to know that modern attitudes to new age religions are growing and evolving as society becomes more accepting... It really ticked me off.

Is it something you are supposed/allowed to be doing at work, or not? If so, I would complain, citing religious persecution. (a funny thought, not one that should be acted on, unless you really want to: threaten to expose said religious persecution to the papers)

You should be ticked off!! Thats just wrong. If thats being blocked why aren't all religions being blocked.
I continue to uphold that any censorship at all is completely wrong, ignorant and unconstitutional. Granted this is isn't a government company running the program, but its still immoral.

Yep, I was supposed to be looking at the site. Well, I was allowed to after work anyway. I don't have net access at home and my very nice boss lets me use the net when I'm not working.

She hadn't chosen to block the site - it was just automatically blocked by the software. I actually sent the software company itself an email complaining about that. I'm also writing up an essay for witchvox (a website posting essays from Pagans all over the world) highlighting the issue. Mind you, I have yet to finish it and submit it, and they STILL haven't posted an essay I did on tattoos that I submitted months ago - they're running a bit behind!

Actually, I never did get a reply from that company... must follow that up.

Oh, and you can unblock sites that they block if you're an administrator, so I did that too

Yeah those blocking things are weird...at my sister's school they'll block really dumb stuff, but leave sites like "college humor" unblocked. And at my school they block google images, but no other image search, like blocking google will make any difference.
I'm guessing that this one is blocked because of all the scary people that live in troll country.

Odd. My school doesn't block FFF.net, but it blocks all religion websites, games, and things the dumb program deem 'tasteless'. And downloading mp3s! which sucks, but i have my FFF workin', so i'm gorram happy.

Really? At my school, this site is blocked and listed under "games." Stupid machine. And, for some odd reason, one of the categories it uses to filter sites is "useless." It also blocks half the legitimate sites for research on the basis of "violent material" or something like that.

In conclusion, school website filters suck, and I hate them. A lot.
