Ooh, new thread.

ADD: Whoa. Firsties. I feel special.

So I'm out soon with an ever growing group of trick or treaters. Honestly, I'm gettin' a little funny feeling about spending so much time with GND's family. But I guess thats just the way things go huh.

Additional ADD: So the news was as of yesterday at noon, Ms. InEdible (As JQ called her) still hadn't picked up her son from his Grandma's care yet. Ain't that some s#!t. I got a bad feelin' we could be runnin' into them (possibly the douchebag squid too). Sorry if I've offended any folks with US Navy leanings or background by referring to it in this manner. But he's a douchebag that happens to be a squid. Thats just the way I see it.

There aren't too many kids around my apartment, for two reasons. First, we're on the outskirts of town, with just a few malls and the university until you hit the highway and get out of dodge, and also because of my apartment's proximity to Brown's Court.
The aforementioned area is a place of great ill repute, where drunken young men stagger about at random, braying and throwing things about with no regard for others, to the point where the police once had to impose a sort of martial law. If one is wise, one avoids Brown's Court at night. That's when the drunks come out. Needless to say, the candy-pickin's are slim in that vicinity. And, no sane mother would let their precious young 'uns go thereabouts. And I don't blame them in the very slightest.

I'm a misanthrope, can't you tell?

One of the suppliers to our company gets their personal to dressed up and they run through our office handing out candy. Really rake it in. Spoils lunch, but I really enjoy how much they get into it.

Hello All!! ShinyKitten - thanks for the emails - I will reply when I have more time online! I was so glad that I didn't have to keep getting up and hand out lollies and treats last night!! Still - it does sound like fun... *looks a little whistful* I will have to make sure I am in the USA one year to experience it! When I was living in the UK it was all about the kids sitting near the corner shop with a very dodgy looking dummy/doll and muttering 'can-you-spare-a-penny-for-the-Guy' which sounded more like 'an'u'pare'apenny'fot'h'gay' which threw me the first time - especially as it was still 3 weeks til Guy Fawkes Day - hey we'll have to have a new pyre for that one with the forsaken!

I have had no end of trouble getting on line today - I have attempted to trouble shoot 2.. yes two!! computers and failed so I will be hosting a tech at my folk's place from 7.30am tomorrow and hoping I can play more then... til then I am at the local library and keep having to stiffle my giggles so that I don't 'get my ass shushed!' *giggles for the benefit of ShinyKitten!*

'Til I can come and play tomorrow here's my most good thing to happen today - I was pulled up at traffic lights and the car in the next lane in front of me had 'Serenity' in Chinese characters on her back windscreen!!! I was so excited I started waving madly at her ...but she obviously thought I was some psychotic 'Creative Memories consultant' or whacko Christian as the only stickers I have on my car reflect those aspects of my life! I will so have to get a Browncoat/Serenity/Firefly thingy now!!!

Tristan - missed you Honey! Thanks for the kisses/hugs & everything! Right back at you!

MsG, Mei Mei & NVG!! Hugs and kisses to you all too! I am so excited that we're going to meet at D*C NVG!!

RIMG, over the years I have had 3 cats that I have lived with at different times. I must admit that I was a staff member in their house. It's probably why I don't have another right now. I'm tired of living with opinionated cats that make their wants known on a daily basis.

Magda, sorry to hear that you are having technical problems. I hope you get it fixed tomorrow.

Hope everyone had a fun time trick or treating.

Heya Magda! you are the bestest!
thanks for the giggles earlier...the librarian really comes out in me sometimes...there were noisy undergrads in the computer lab today at uni and a bunch of my classmates and i (also questing to be librarians) were in there too. you could totally see all of us get really on edge at the same time, and all consider if we would go over and 'talk' to them about it- these kids were being SO loud and inconsiderate in a shared space...Bah!

ShinyKitten, you should have sent your ambitious kitty over to straighten out those unruly undergrads. Your kitty would have scratched them until they ran in fear. Did you see the vids that JonnyQuest had on one of the threads? It had a cat chasing a bear. Some felines are totally fearless.

mornin' Imponderables.

To answer my own question, as much as I try to maintain that it is my own house, I tend to feel more like a staff member to them as well. We have three cats, and while I am not overly fond of them, I still do a lot to make them comfortable (read: spoiled).

Hope you all had a good Halloween/Samhein yesterday. I took my boys out to get candy and play a little at a church we had never been to (and may not ever go back to) and was actually able to be polite and converse with them, though I am sure if they knew my true nature they would either shun me completely or spend the whole night in an attempt to 'save' me.

Dogs have owners. Cats have staff. Or 'minions'. You do not own a cat, you merely minister to it's every need and desire.

I mean - cats. Decorative, not functional. You make them happy, and all they have to do in return is to make a pleased noise. If they feel like it. What a cool life.

Picture this - four grown adults sitting on the floor, rather than turf the sleeping cat off the sofa. None of these adults own the cat (mine) which has wandered into their house and glared at them until they got up and let it have the warm spot. True story.

Uh Oh - was it 'one of those churches' RIMG? I would have to say that we don't try to 'save' people at our church - just try to be there for those who want to know more about our faith - it's a really nice community actually... and we have a almost-Goth and an 'alternative-type' (sorry I don't like labelling folk and don't know how else to describe this gorgeous girl) there most Sunday mornings! We generally just have a fun, supportive, caring and sometimes reflective community!

Ah... where was I? Oh yeah - forsaken I think...? Might go dance by the pyre...

Hey Kaylee Clone! I have missed being in touch with you! I have managed to get the dial up working now - but I had some fun doing it!!

Is it just me or is it quiet in here today - are we all hung over from the lollies and other junk food festival??

Magda, I live in the Deep South, Bible belt, and it was a Southern Baptist church. There are literally churches on every corner in this little town, and everyone pretty much assumes that you are some sort of Christian, especially working for the gorramn feds. I am happy to hear that your church is not the pushy kind, as most from out of the US and many in the US that are not in the South are. I just smile and let them do their thing, because getting into a discussion with any of them has proven to be useless every time I have tried it. They will hear what I say but not listen to me, and I don't see much point in continuing to try.

MAVOURNEEN

Morning, Everyone.

Well, the fun of Halloween at my house was just a front so Carson wouldn't be so upset - my Husband's Cockatiel got out of the house, and flew away.

As son & I pulled into the driveway last night, Husband told us Hope (bird's name) had gotten out the living room window.

We looked for a long time, but no luck. Husband is distraught; he failed to clip her wings last week when he noticed she was flying a bit too much, and he opened the window because it was so darn nice out last night.

She was a beautiful Galah cockatiel:

My son cried as he went to sleep, worrying about Hope. Husband was stoic, but I could tell he was just barely holding it together.

Carson, being 5, was able to forget about Hope for a little while and trick or treated at a few houses...but when we got home he remembered and was upset again.

I need more coffee.

I have no doubt that you would listen, it's part of what makes you a Browncoat (or being a Browncoat is what leads you to listen, either way, it's a goodness).

KELKHIL

Morning all!

*Waves to Mags* Hiya there sis!

So I posted this in the Pub but realized that it could start a fun day after conversation:

Well Trick or Treating was ok last night. Except that it seems like every year less and less houses are lit up in my neighborhood. That makes me so mad! Its for the kids to go out and have fun for sake! It seems like people go out of there way now a days to find a reason to not let kids have fun anymore! Or they decide that it is against their religion to participate in Halloween even though they were Trick or Treating as kids. When I was a kid every house was lit up and there was candy by the ton.

So what has happened to Halloween? I mean it was never about religion when I was growing up and now it is. It is suppose to be about the kids. Now I understand how it all began but why has it become taboo for some religions now? Why have some religions become so closed minded? Especially when most of them did not care about this day 20 years ago. It just seems like another form of control and it makes me so angry!

Rant done.

Well we had a lot of lovely trick or treaters and finally had to just put a bowl on the porch with the take only one sign so we could go to bed. Kids were really decent and actually toook only one. There was candy left when we got up:)

Magda- big hugs big sis...hope you sleep well:)

Mavoureen- I am so sorry. I hope your birdy comes home or that you find her. I wish you luck.

Tristan- HUGS and pass the coffee please

Kelkhil- not sure how we lost the joy of halloween, though I will say the kids in my neighborhood we pretty sweet ( had the cutest little 1 year old elephant come a trick or treating)

RIMG- hmmm sorry about the baptists...methodists are a little calmer( for the most part) but having grown up in Atlanta I do understand the church on every corner.

Thanks for the good thoughts, everyone.

As Magda pointed out, Galahs are from Down Under...where it is warmer than here in the Mid-Atlantic US. I'm worried about her surviving. Yesterday's weather was unseasonably warm, but in the next 24 hrs it is supposed to turn much colder, esp. overnight.

She's also not used to flying - I would think she's walking on the ground, and easy pickins for some kind of critter.

I don't want to focus too much on this or it will drive me nuts. -Thanks for the kind words.

*And we had 0 kids at the door last night.

I grew up Methodist in Columbus, GA, very similar in the religious aspect to my current locale. When I was in Atlanta for school is when I started to question it all and eventually came to the conclusions I now hold to.

Because Halloween is a filthy, hedonistic holiday that comes from the devil, didn't you know?
I'm sorry, we shouldn't be having religious rants here, but it's a bit of a sore spot of me, not only that a perfectly wonderful Pagan day of power would be seen as 'of the devil' but also how hysterical people have been getting, esspecially since... around 2000 or so. Would you say that's about right? I think that's about right.
Certain people are trying to turn this country fanatically Christian and it's working. Fight the power. Dance nekkid

Yay for the nekkid dancing, and fighting the power (says the gov't employee).

I think it is ironic and hypocritical that they classify it as the 'devil's work', or even as a pagan holiday, when the major Christian holidays come from pagan holidays as well. If you are going to look at the past and the origins of a day, you need to look at all of them, not just the ones that are convienient.

Yet another halloween with no trick or treaters. Why don't they come to the apartments? Guess I'll have to eat the bowl of candy. The only costumes I got to see were on the girls at our local hootersesque bbq restaurant. Not that I'm complaining about those

Oh well. I'll still always be prepared with candy. And little do the kids know if they knocked on my door they'd be getting like half the bowl since no one else was going to claim any.

I live in a tiny country town called Damascus in the state of Maryland. The two biggest resources we have here are cops and churches. In fact, I live right across the streets (as in, I look out my front window and I'm starring right at it) from an all-black Methodist church, which is the sister church of the Methodist church I go to about a mile towards town. There's a Baptist church, a Catholic, an Episcopalian and a Lutheran just off the top of my head. I ain't seen a single one of them condemning Halloween, and in fact, the night before last, my little sister was going to a haunted house for Youth Night at the Methodist church. Just in case any of you pagans got a bad opinion of Christianity, even my tiny-backwater town is very accepting of people's beleifs.

I'd say the most oppressive institution in this town is, realistically, the High School football team, who are admittedly a bunch of shitheads.

well, I had exactly 0 trick or treaters last night. I was actually quite disappointed, I had my water gun primed and ready at the window over the front door, but then Hallowe'en isn't as big here as it is over there.

And yes, I'm very aware that Pagan hollidays were hijacked, but Halloween is one of the few that wasn't. It isn't a 'Christian' Holiday, it isn't even a National holiday. So more and more, hysterical people get, well, hysterical about it.

Ha!
We live in Silver Spring now.

And yes, Damascus football team are a bunch of eedjiots.

Ye gods, I love your signature! *huggles fellow Wiccan* Nekkid dancing is the only way to do it, isn't it?

Well if'n that ain't just a huge coincidence.

I used to work up in Silver Spring for a little while, and my grandparents used to have a condo in or near the Highland House condominium buildings.

JONNYQUEST

"Did he just go crazy and fall asleep?"

Only a third of the way through reading the thread so excuse me if someone beat me to it. About cats and dogs? In a nutshell:

Dog: This human feeds me, houses me, takes care of everything! He must be god!

Cat: This human feeds me, houses me, takes care of everything! I must be god!

Quick Halloween story for the day after.

When my Grandparents came to America they spoke very little English and were not familiar with the customs here. (For some related reason the Beverly Hillbillies were a favorite at our house.) This state of affairs over the years yielded many Stranger in a Strange Land tales.

So it came to pass that the night before All Saint's Day is celebrated in America with a yearly tradition of dressed up children going from door to door saying "Trick or Treat" for which they receive a piece of candy. This was explained to my Grandparents, who being good sports and thinking it was a quaint thing (not yet realizing how many ways people try to get something for nothing over here), "got" it and went along with it.

What didn't get explained was that a night or two before Halloween, kids would get dressed up and go door to door trick or treating for UNICEF. These little ambassadors were collecting money for a good cause and came equipped with little milk carton like things with a change slot cut into the top.

So up come the UNICEFers and my grandmother answers the door and tries to shove a butterscotch disk or somesuch into the milk carton slot. ("Wonder how come they're so early? Huh, must have gotten the date wrong. Lucky we're such orderly people and got the candy already") "No, no, ma'am. 'Trick or Treat for UNICEF!' 'UNICEF!'" (Wonder what they are saying after "Trrick or Trreat?" Wecome to the United States? No...Here just take the damn candy and get off my porch!) "Bye, bye, kinder!"
"Damn foreigners..."

"Well, here I am...Does that seem right to you?"

Halloween...taken from wikipedia (not always the most reliable source, but it does have all the info compacted into neat chunks). This is the part that I was looking for. It looks to me like it was hijacked...
Quote:

The term Halloween, and its older spelling Hallowe'en, is shortened from All-hallow-even, as it is the evening before "All Hallows' Day"[1] (also known as "All Saints' Day"). The holiday was a day of religious festivities in various northern European Pagan traditions, until Popes Gregory III and Gregory IV moved the old Christian feast of All Saints Day from May 13 to November 1. In Ireland, the name was All Hallows' Eve (often shortened to Hallow Eve), and though seldom used today, it is still a well-accepted label. The festival is also known as Samhain or Oíche Shamhna to the Irish, Calan Gaeaf to the Welsh, Allantide to the Cornish and Hop-tu-Naa to the Manx. Halloween is also called Pooky Night in some parts of Ireland, presumably named after the púca, a mischievous spirit.

Many European cultural traditions hold that Halloween is one of the liminal times of the year when spirits can make contact with the physical world and when magic is most potent (e.g. Catalan mythology about witches, Irish tales of the Sídhe).

*sigh* I don't have that problem.

I've been meaning to ask you, what is a dorje? You've mentioned it a couple times in reference to the items on your altar. I've never heard of that before and am curious.

Love your gold rose wand, BTW. Very shiny.

MSG

I think it may be the tight helmets...or maybe the tight pants, but most football players I know or have had contact with seem to have suffered brain damage of some kind and also a loss of morals/compassion so hmmm maybe different uniforms would help ( that was sarcastic if you can't tell)

I had a friend (male) who was in dance company with me and he got a tremendous amount of hassling from the team until he challenged them to a test of stamina/strength by having a bench press contest and then a contest to see who could run the most miles without stopping...naturally he won both and several football players still made remarks about his being "gay" and a prissy wimp. So he made a really pointed comment (that he spent most of his time with his hands on half naked women and they spent their time showering together and patting each others butts) in front of a large group and they pretty much shut up

I would also point out that ,as his dance partner, I can absolutely promise he isn't gay. I know tons of male dancers who are, but it bugs me when people leap to a conclusion about someone like that.He has a really bad case of wandering hands and "accidentally" wandering in while we showered or changed" Not that I don't love him and all:)( equivalent for you southerners as " bless his heart")Trust me, many many days I wished he was gay!

I choose to rise instead of fall- U2

The dorje is a Buddhist symbol/tool. It represents 'the thunderbolt of enlightenment' and a small version can be held during meditation. I grew up with Buddhist parents, and I got my dorje when I was... about nine? Don't remember. I also own meditation balls and have a Buddha on my altar. And dragons. And I have little statues of totems of mine, too. See, I'm a bit of a buffet Pagan. Last count, I followed a few traditions/beliefs of five or six different systems: Buddhism, Paganism, Taoism, Shamanism, Wicca, Druidism, Egyptian... And according to some, Gnosticsism, too.
Anyway, here's a simple dorje:

Mine was gold when I got it, but it's a bit tarnished now. And the picture I got of it was rather crap, but there's not a lot to be done about that.

NVGHOSTRIDER

Good post Halloween Morning to all. Y'all move so quick it took a good fifteen minutes to catch up.

Looks like I missed ya again Mags. I'm gonna try my darndest to make it to the next D*C. Like I said, it would be easiest to centalize the meeting. I hope more FFF.NET folks can make it.

CMH- I too saw the local football team as the most oppressive group in the valley. Not that the whole team was a buncha s#!theads. I just got tired of the various teams wanting nothing to do with me other than to have me on because of my size. My concern was my lack of discipline at the time they wanted me. I was more likely to juggernaught my way through everyone than to play an actual game. I never cared for social politics and would have no part of it. So I'd be on the field as an individual, not part of a team. That and I had a bad habit of sticking up for the little people all through school. As fun as it sounds, I'd had several standoffs with factions of the football team all through school. Sure kept the injury list full from time to time.

Looks like I'm outta time for a bit. Meetings this morning. Oh Boy!

Happy Birthday PsychoBilly!

Oh, cool. And a buffet Wiccan, as you say, is fun. I tend to be pretty eclectic, myself. Makes it more interesting.

And MSG?--your dancer friend sounds awesome, shutting down those football players like that. *giggle*

RIVERISMYGODDESS

MSG, we had a male on the flag squad in the GT marching band. It got to where even the crowd got into it, chanting "Flag Boy" (sometimes omitting the L sound) when we went on the field. Very much not gay, and he spent his days with the rest of the squad, all female, and mostly attractive. Poor flag guy? I say, poor us.
