TODMCFLY

I am police officer in CA (not going to say what city) and am also a HUGE fan of every thing firefly. And i need to share this story with the fans.

It was around 1700 as the sun was going down in my city and i was working my patrol area when i saw a a car with a sticker on its back.

Normaly i ignore stickers, but this one caught my attention, it was a sticker of serenity! my first thought was, thats awsome. the car also had a license plate cover that stated "keep on fightin brown coats"

I had no other choice but to find something wrong with this veihcle and proceed to pull it over and tell the driver how much of a fan i was of firefly.

After following him for ten min he made a mistake and did not signal, "HA" i got him i thought. The second i pulled him over i radio-ed in 961, which means i need no help im good to go, its just me and the driver.

As i stroll up to his window i put on a tough face. i can tell he is nervous and scared and not happy about the situation.

As i bend over to talk to him i say "good day to you borwncoat".

at first he was somewhat confused, but then he caught on and realized that i had a smile on my face and was a fan of the all might show firefly!

i told him right away he was getting no ticket and proceeded to talk to him about the show and movie.

after talking with the individual for around ten min, i got another call and had to split.

Of course i gave him no ticket and never planed too, but that little bit of firefly talk with another browncoat lightened up my day which was already dark because of an earlier call with a 288 (pedophile).

there really is no point to this story other than how the show firefly draws people together and brightens up my day when ever i think about Mals sayings or janes silly ways, and meeting another fan on the road like that made my day a little better.

Thanks for sharing the story. It's always great to hear about finding a Browncoat in real life. I'm sure that the driver was freaked out at first, but he was probably relieved to find a Browncoat had pulled him over.

Police officer,

Kaneman,
I'm I the only one concerned about this? Read what I just wrote....again.....again...slowly.........once more.

Who gives a shit.."from a police officer"..like it's more important than if it were from anyone else...The last thing browncoats want is a shake down from the fuzz. Give your self a ticket for being a pompous ass. We all know any dullard can be a police officer...Shit, Rosco p coltrain ring a bell? The fact you can do that (follow someone for ten Mi.) and laugh about it is disgusting. Could you do that if it were about a skin color you didn't like? A sexual orientation? ..Thanks for validating my thought that cops are assholes with too much authority.....Well, it's true......

Welcome home, Todmcfly (#23444)

It's right shiny to find you signing on with
the finest crew in the 'Verse.

I'll take this opportunity to offer you the
traditional strawberries and a big, sloppy
mug of Mudder's Milk (hope you're not on duty!)
for starters, and then it's up those stairs
to interrogate the buffet. A delicious array
of interplanetary foods awaits you there.

If you attract the attention of the right people
you'll be fitted with a lovely virtual browncoat
of your very own.

Please do not step on ShipsCat or into her dish.

Please promise never to pull me over. I'd have
to towel out my seat afterward.

First of all i did not mean to sound like a pompus ass hole, it was a slow night and i had no calls on the screen so therefore it was some what boring out. and i was not giving any one a shake down, the only thing i wanted to do was show him my support and tell him i too was a fellow borwn coat.

for some reason this made you upset kaneman and im not exactly sure why it did. it was a freindly meeting between two broancoats, that was all, the driver did not seem to mind at all, we both left the interaction with a smile on our face so alls well that ends well.

Great story, and welcome to the site!

Sadly, I've never met any other Browncoats in my town, although I've converted a few. Then again, the Serenity shirts at our Hottopic seemed to sell well, so maybe it's just a matter of time.

Me too, buddy, me too. And I'd like to take this moment to say thank you for being a responsible and concerned police officer as well as a 'Coat. Who can say? That guy probably avoided a serious collision with your reminder about proper signalling. As I'm sure he discovered, you won't find a shinier group of folk than us Browncoats anywhere else. So just ignore the numbskulls hereabouts and enjoy the fandom, which I've found is the perfect way to unwind after a rough day on the job.

Though I know something about tact, unlike Kane, and I do enjoy a good story every now and then, (God I can't believe I'm about to say this) I do have to agree with Kane, to a point. Though in this case the "abuse" of police power ended with no ill effects, quite the opposite it seems, this practice is common place and usually doesn't have a happy ending.

That's not the point here though. The point is I appreciate you sharing your story with us regardless of the hostility some show (in almost every thread in some people's cases), and I encourage everyone on this board to continue to do so.

while i find the story amusing, i have to agree with kaneman to a certain degree. i don't think it's funny for the browncoat in the other car nor anybody else to be pulled put by the "Feds" even when you know you have done something wrong. if you haven't you're even more worried that this cop is actually trying to frame you.
while this was all a harmless episode, i can imagine (and I'm sure the poor browncoat imagined) all kinds of things that could happen when police stop you for totally unjustifiable and arbitrary reasons.

Believe me when I say that it pains me VERY much to admit, but I think I have to agree with KANEMAN here. Sorry you had to listen to his crap... I'm dealing with it on another thread of mine and if you look around you can see he pretty much has something lousy to say to everyone.... let's just say, he's really got a way with words. This just happens to be the first time I can remember that I've actually agreed with the motives behind his verbal abuse. I can assure you that the vast majority of us here are very friendly folk.

I must admit that not much a fan at all of police or government, as centralized as it is today, in general. I do, however realize that the individual often transcends the organization which it represents. I am one of the few Americans left who are fully aware of what their rights are and if you had been following me that long (assuming I didn't have a couple of beers and you weren't following me home from the bar) you wouldn't have had to wait for me not to use my turn signal, because I would have pulled over well before that and seen if you passed me or asked you why you were following me. Too many people are afraid of police and if they show the police that they are afraid, then that gives them undiserved power. Respect is earned, and I do not give it out to somebody just beause they wear a badge. There are far too many corrupt cops out there and the fact that somebody has one pinned to their chest does not make them better than me. This is not to say that I don't act polite when I get pulled over. I've actually been pulled over nearly 20 times and I've walked away with 3 tickets in my life.

You seem like a nice, friendly guy and you're probably one of the good cops. It doesn't hurt that you're a Browncoat either. You should probably expect that with a post like this, you're going to get the stay at home dads and the soccer moms thinking that it's a heartwarming tale of Browncoat meets Browncoat. At the same time though there are many of us who, like the Browncoats, belive that if they lived the rest of their lives without ever seeing a cop again, it would be too soon. It's all about reading your audience, and you're talking to a bunch of Browncoats man! Many of which, I would think, don't take to kindly to alliance types.

I am curious how you were able to walk away from that situation without giving him a ticket. I've been told by cops the last couple of times I've been pulled over that "I really don't want to give you this ticket, and I'd love to give you a warning here, but I've already called it in and I have to write it now"... I think I recall something about the squad car camera being on too. Your own damn vehichles spying on you while you're working so you don't give away too many freebies. It always seemed to me a means for the government to dehumanize traffic cops. It must be a tough job ruining peoples day... I know I couldn't do it. In your professional opinion, is this really the case, or were these cops lying to me about not having the choice to give a warning after calling it in?

Anyways... welcome to the 'verse. It's interesting to see all the different kinds of people that Firefly attracts.

Every police agency that I know of stresses discrepancy. 99% of the people out there are hard working “good” individuals. So for example, I see some one going over the speed limit by 15 mph, yes I can pull him over and warn him and it is not a necessity to give him a ticket, a warning would suffice. People tend to think that we as police officers have some sort of a quota, here is how it really works. The more tickets you give the harder it looks like your working. Its as simple as that, if I just drove around warning every one my higher ups would think I am what we call a “slug”(some one who is not willing to work). In my city I don’t really give traffic tickets (there is more than enough crime to keep me busy usually, so traffic tickets are wwwayyyy low on my list). And if a cop tells you he has to give you a ticket it is BS, discrepancy is HUGE. A warning will almost always suffice for general traffic tickets.

And I really didn’t follow him for that long; I should not have put that I followed him for ten minutes.

Here is how it went

He made an illegal maneuver; I pulled him over, checked to make sure he was not a wanted felon, and warned him about his illegal maneuver. And then I basically threw in some brown coat talk

For those of you who say I am abusing my power, I laugh. I did nothing wrong here, I did not leave my beat to follow him, I did not harass him, I simply kept my eye on him.
And if you think that is an abuse of power than I hope to god you never see some of the stuff I have seen,

I consider myself a hard working cop that does not abuse his power, every one is on even grounds with me. I pulled a little bit of humanity in to the job, I see nothing wrong with that and will continue to work the way I am for the rest of my career.

Well at least it's not dull. :)

I would actually enjoy it if I was approached by a stranger to discuss the 'verse. Even if that stranger was a cop.

hey
just want to say welcome to the browncoats. Its nice to know there are browncoats in every profession including cops. Maybe it woulkd be nice to settle dow nthe tension in how you heard about firefly? have you shared the wonders of it with others, including the other police at your precinct?

I just have to say that I never agree with kaneman, and his tone(like othershave said) leaves much to be desired, I do share the concern. Now what you did is not an abuse of power and it is all fine. But speaking as someone who is not a cop, who is brownskinned(South Asian actually, and probably a target for racial profilling at airports and such), I haev to say being pulled over by any cop is not fun and scary, especially, if I knew I did nothing wrong, or what I did wrong was really really small.

I am a law abiding citizen, I have never gotten a speeding ticket nor have I ever been pulled over, but to deal with cops gives me the heebee jeebese. I understand police are a necessary workforce and msot of them are good people and work hard to solve hard crimes like muders andsuch, its just maybe all the incidicents I have heard of abuse either through the news or through second hand info, freaks me out. Plus there is the race issue. I just can't help it.

So what you did , was well good natured fun, and I won't fault you for that, but I jsut wanted to share the side of the story of someone who is not a police officer. If it had been me that was pulled over(I should put browncoat stuff on my car), while yes I would be happy to meet a fellow browncoat anbd it would be cool, let me tell you, being pulled over like that would not be fun for me, and I would not enjoy it, and would make me think that the cop may be "out to get me". Call it paranoia, but it is there.

Anyways hope you enjoy yourself here, I don't mean to be rude, or dont want to spoil the fun for you, I just wanted to share my apprehensions. Hopefully Followmal wil lbe along to give youa virtual browncoat its great, anddont forget to as I am sure floral bunny says, question and dare I say interrogate the buffet.

i had a sort of similar experience once with a car i once owned......it was a 1974 ranchero (the ford version of the el camino) that was all kinds of hopped up, it had a motor ford doesn't even make in america anymore (thecleveland block 351) an awesome dual exhaust, dual quads, the works, and it just sounded so bad-ass going down the road, i had a state cop pull me over just to see what this thing was........it was actually a fun experience, 'cause he was like a little kid checking out my ride

Simon: "Were there any Feds?"
mal: "No, no Feds, just an honest brawl between folk."

SIRI

I'm pretty much a newbie here so from one to another welcome.

As to your story, I've been reading through most of the posts. I tend to be more anti-establishment in a low-keyed manner. Many of the folks I work out with in my Krav Maga class are law enforcement types. That's new for me. We're all people and have things in common but I tend to be a bit cautious. Not that I'm afraid to speak my mind. I just don't see the point in drawing attention to myself in ways that might not serve. Kind of more like Zoe than Mal I guess.

In my neighborhood we've had a number of situations where police officers have allegedly (cause I wasn't there to witness it) sexually harrassed and fondled women they've stopped. While I'm not the fearful type I have to say if I were stopped in this area at night I'd be on my guard.

I don't know if you realized what you were getting into when you posted your story. I always figure we can learn from everything and this is an opportunity to view things in ways we hadn't considered before. Even when I get pissed off about something, once I calm down, I try to figure out how to make it useful. Even if it's as simple as doing everything I can to avoid that same situation in the future.

OK that was fun - now I'm going to go vote for Firefly as the best TV show again.

KANE if you are reacting like to a story on the Internet, then how do you react to these kinds of stories in real life? He was just telling you a story about an interesting thing that happend to him that night. You could have not posted?

And come on, " Abuse of power?" Are you a human activist? He played a joke on a guy. You know i think if the driver didnt mind then there is nothing to be upset about as you obviously are.

Mornin officer. I've got a good job for you. There are some F_x exects I'd like for you to pull over and ticket for canceling a great show without blinking. If they give you any trouble send them to the "Big House" and see to it that they are put in a cell with the biggest, meanest "Mutha" you can find. One that will walk up to them and say " You sure ain't gonna be pitchin."

bwt,welcome

SAHARA

It's a whole 'us' and 'them' kind of mindset that really doesn't solve anything or get anyone anywhere.

I've just seen a thread in this part of the forum titled "Hope?"

It's hard not to look at the whole FF/Serenity ordeal without seeing it as us(vs)them when you have so many browncoats that know a new series or sequel to Serenity is worth making not only for the fans but that will make money as well. Still there is no hint that there will be more. That's where the whole us/them situation comes in. It's not a good feeling. It comes out of frustration. Bowncoats aren't beyond asking for more. We've done that and are continuing to do it. Where has that gotten us?

I will continue to support and preach the Joss verse but sometime I get the feeling that companies are just milking every last bit of profit that they can and your opinion/feelings as a fan don't mean a thing. So why not get the feeling that it's us/them? If I see a little sunshine I'm ready to join the team and become a team player.

Z, holding till I see more.
