I am really curious as to whether this is a real town or if it is just a euphemism like Bumblefuck ??

On the conversation about gun safety, I like the rules from PhoenixRose's dad, and I think Mal summed it up pretty well in the beginning of Objects in Space: No touching guns. I don't have one myself, though I live in a somewhat rural town, but I do want to teach both of my boys to be safe with them as well as with sharp metal things. I think that ignoring the issue, especially when they are so prevalent in both real life and media cultures, is a bad idea.

I am with you, I used to love that show. Sometimes I see old episodes being replayed on some channel or another, and I just had the bright idea that it would be a perfect show to replay on [adult swim]. Hmmmm, ideas.

I used to have the song that is the thread's title memorized, but not so much now.

Curiously, yet another song that gets stuck in my head every once in a while...

"The Log Song", from Ren & Stimpy

"What rolls down stairs alone or in pairs
Rolls over your neighbor's dog?
What's great for a snack and fits on your back?
It's Log, Log, Log!

It's Log, Log, it's big, it's heavy, it's wood.
It's Log, Log, it's better than bad, it's good!
Everyone wants a log! You're gonna love it, Log!
Come on and get your log! Everyone needs a Log!"

OK I so love the idea of a real town calle Gopher's Crotch...

Tristan oh come on you can't start a story and not finish it. Now you have to tell us how you blew a hole in your roof...OH that would be a great ponderable.... What's your most embarassing destructive incident???

I'll go first. Let me start by saying I adore scented candles. When I was still living at home and had just graduated high school, I left a candle burning too long and the wick got buried. Being resourceful ( well I thought I was) I brought the candle downstairs and figured I'd melt it a bit and pull the wick through. I took the candle to the microwave and put it in for 5 minutes figuring that would be enough time to liquify the candle.( no I did NOT know candles were flamable. I didn't equating melting and fire with flamable) By the time the little bell dinged, I had burned a 3 inch diameter hole in the top of the microwave. To this day, my mother always eyes me suspiciously when I use the microwave.

I had fun, but apparently I can't count. #1 rule when being snarky...don't make a mistake. Dagnabbit, I broke that rule. Oh well.

Guns: I had some experiences with them when I was young. Learned to shoot, etc. but I'm not very comfortable with them now. I suppose introduction to guns really depends on where you live. In the city, going out shooting is an involved process. You either have to go to a range or travel quite a distance for some open space. Not so in a more rural setting.

I will say that I completely freaked out one day when I was out at the barn "alone" and one of the barn workers was walking around with a big ole rifle. I was all kinds of scared. Turns out he was just shooting gophers and rabbits, but I didn't know that. All I knew was here was some guy with a gun.

As for weather...Am I gloating if I tell you it's been 80 degrees with cloudless skies for about a week and a half? Gotta love California. 'Course, the consequences for the beautiful weather is another huge fire.

yeah but that fire was set intentionally so it could happen anywhere and isn't weather related... Sounds like you love living there Rugbug. I'd be seriously sad if it was this close to Halloween and 80 degrees and sunny, but that's why I don't live in California. I'm glad you're enjoying it though:)

MSG, that gave me a good laugh! I found out that if you melt wax in a pan on the stove, and then go to pour it into plastic ice trays, it will melt right through the trays and coat the kitchen in wax.
Ok, the continuation of that story. I was living with the soon-to-be wife and her friend (yes, Three's Company jokes abound). I was showing the roommate the new rifle and the s-t-b was in there with us. I was trying to show her the magazine release to show how you could drop the magazine, cycle the bolt, and clear the chamber. As this was a new-to-me rifle, I thought I knew where the safety was and where the the release catch was. I was wrong on both counts. The safety was off and what I hit was the trigger. Luckily it was pointing at the ceiling...bang. So, yes...that destroyed any credibility I had in the s-t-b's eyes as far as gun safety went for quite awhile.
Thanks for making me remember that in full!

RugBug, hey, counting properly is optional when you are having fun!

Well, as usual, the weather isn't helping with the fire.

But yeah, I love living here. I can't imagine being somewhere with actual weather. I'd melt or get blown away or something. But folks with weather do have green. We only have green if we irrigate for it or from about Feb to May.

Oh, and the nights are chilly. low 50s. It's suppose to cool down over the weekend, too. I was riding last night and my horse was clomping his way through the fallen leaves. So, it does still feel like fall...just a bit of a different kind of fall then some see.

Afternoon everyone,

As far as guns go, I've never held or fired one.And have no desire to.They frighten me, as there is so much gun violence where I live. all my life I've heard how destructive they are. Good on you folk that are being responsible about them though. Now weapons like a sword or mace I could deal with , and when I have a house I probably will get one or 2 .Recently I went to the Metropolitan museum and they have an armory. It was astounding to see all the weapons humanity can come up with.

Hi Tristan - I love it when it rains . I live right on the coast and there's that salty taste to the sir just before a storm. It's even better if we get lightining. For some reason I find it very energizing. Now if it gets really hot, that's when I want to curl up and stay in bed !I think I may be part polar bear.

Afternoon, LA29!
Hmm, a salt taste to the rain...now that wouldn't be too bad at all!

I also had a chance to go through the Met when I visited there in '96...or maybe '97...can't quite remember. I think I may have been the only one in the Medieval section with a sketch pad!

Hello all.

Lets see
Weapons: I own many but haven't named any.

Gun Safety: I started shooting and thus learned gun safety very early. I think I was about 5 or 6. And It was seriously drilled into me not to touch w/o supervision.

Rain: Its raining hard here, but I love the rain.

Embarassing destructive incident: Lets just say black ice and granite cliffs don't mix.

Q: How much does one man's sorrow weigh?
A: As much as he allows it to weigh.

No guns for me. I don't ever want one because I can convince myself way too easily that a stranger's life is totally worthless. If I was ever in a situation where someone was threatinging a friend or family member with harm and I had a gun that person would be shot without a second thought. So, I think it's probably best I don't ever use a gun.

Weapons? No real ones (I do own the old Transformers Megatron though -- the Walther P90 [?] version without the fun accessories, just him.) The usual kitchen utensils, scissors, razor thingy for cutting taped boxes...OH! and I do have a plumber's size wrench (for the under-the-sink pipes) (I guess that would count as a weapon if I were to grab ahold of it at the right time.)

Rain: Rarely does, 'cause that means that the humidity is going to drop. (Growing up in a location that almost constanly rained makes me used to the rain. For me, rainy days usually means that it's the "winter" season here. ) If it's a drizzle *phft* "liquid sunshine." If it's a bit harder, then I look for the nearest dry spot to hide under (unless I need to let the immature brat out and play) or coze comfortably at home. Constantly overcast, pouring rain days are another story...then yes, I think I get SAD.

I've never noticed a salt taste to the air, but I tend to get pressure headaches if it's supposed to rain (and be a big one) soon. For me, I like the after the rain scent where the whole place has that "clean" smell to it. It's just really something to enjoy.

It's Friday. I can't believe today feels like a Garfield MONDAY with all the fun of Mrs. Murphy's law tossed in. Teachers/social service folk here: ever have days where doing what you're expected to do to make the workplace "safe" (like chasing off tresspassers who have scary intents -- picking up youths to join them for "fun") just goes 'round and bites you right there? That's what today feels like.

I'm off for a bit...try and see you shiny folks later.

A .38 snub nose is my main sidearm. Gold plated hammer and trigger, my dad got it for me when I graduated from jump school.

Two .45 semi-auto's, one Colt and one Springfield. Colt's my favorite to shoot.

I also have an AR-15, that was unfortunately purchased during the assault weapons ban, so there's no flash supressor and the mags I have for it are only 20 rounds. I could get the accessories, but I'm too poor right now.

U.S. Army Standard issue KABAR. My favorite knife.

Buck knife that I've used on several hunting and wilderness excursions.

A decently crafted Daisho from Hanwei. I named the Zukuri Katana "Kage no Aki", Shadow of Autumn. The wakizashi remains un-named.

Traditional Scottish Claymore, with a Y shaped hilt instead of the "Braveheart" cross-hilt.

And besides those, a host of 15$ - 70$ "crap" swords. Although I wish to point out one in particular, "Mikadonami", that has particular sentimental value.

A really cheap double flail, tonfa, nunchaku, shinai, bokken, knuckle-dusters, butterfly-knife.

That's all I can think of. My dad's got a small armoury in his basement.

My education with firearms began with a pellet gun when I was six. My father demonstrated why you don't screw with firearms by loading it, turning it to the deck, and embedding a pellet a quarter inch into the pine. I've never pointed a gun at a human being, and only had one pointed at me once (for about a half second before the man hit me with it).
The first actual gun I fired was the .22 Browning my brother's going to get. It's a good beginners gun. It has minimal kick, and teaches you how to sight. After that, it went directly to shotguns and skeet-shooting, before going back down to .22 and semiautomatic fire. Never used the Rifles as yet.
I'm really going to have to go skeet-shooting again, one day. Advantage of being a rural kid, I guess.

And, for those of you who are going to ask about the time I got hit by a gun, it was a robbery I walked in on. He saw me, I froze, he clubbed me, and ran out. Not much of a story, although it does add to the tally of times I've almost got dead...
The fact that I have to use both hands to count them isn't a good sign, is it?

Gardening implements, all unnamed.
Take that you foul bindweed!
Begone purslane!

Loud noises make me jump. Give me a bow and arrow any day. (Okay so long as what's called for is not an assault weapon and a few grenades). I'll leave the guns to the hunters.

We've had rain and rain and rain. I think some of the curl up and snooze factor may be due to changes in barometric pressure, decreased illumination, and and instinctual drive to minimize energy output (cold, shivering, and wet = increased cost of survival. Warm and snoozy = decreased energy spent. ).
Rain and rain and rain is about to turn into rainandrainandrain and WIIIINNND and snooowwww.
Thank you Ohio River Valley. Thank you so very much.

It's like all memory of it has been wiped clean. We've had rain for a week now except for one day and the sun was out for about two minutes. I stared it into embarassment and it went away. It's been gray for at least two weeks. Anyway. You're home safe and that's some of the best news I've heard today.

As far as the gun safety issue goes, I guess I'm with PR and MsG and others too I think. Now's a great time for the "Do not touch!" lessons. But the tiny little hands ain't gonna have the right grip yet (among other reasons).

But I puzzled by this thread somewhat. Everybody is talking about locking up the guns. Why not just lock up the children? Seems like the answer to many a parent's problems, not just gun safety. That way Kelkhil, if they're used to confined spaces, they won't mind the trunk on those long hauls to find the best Cons...

CMH, why do you prefer the Colt over the Springfield? I have had the chance to fire both, and I have not really noticed much of a difference...do you have either one modified in any way? You also sound like me with the swords and "assorted edged weapons" collection....

Neko! Whatcha doin'?

JTD, if you ever have the chance to go skeet shooting with a Mossberg riot gun, go for it! Real quick funny story....
I have a friend who's father invited us to do some shotgunning one day. I have several shotguns, but the Mossberg is the one I prefer for general range shooting. We get to the place, and it turns out it's a skeet range...and I am at a serious disadvantage now, or so I think. This is the funny part, though...on the first 20 skeet round, I outshot both my friend and my friend's father...I hit 8 of the 20, they hit 5 or 6. Imagine a pistol-grip, pump-action shotgun with the minimum-length unchoked slug barrel against 20-gauge over-under shotguns! Of course, it was beginners' luck...they wiped the floor with me from then on out. But, it was worth it to see their expressions; especially the range-master: "Son, are you really serious?".

StinkingRose... That was funny!

Ren and Stimpy indeed. For those who are unsure of the lyrics, here y'go.
(Stimpy)
Our country reeks of trees
Our yaks are really large
And they smell like rotting beef carcuses

And we have to clean up after them
And our sadle sores are the best
We proudly wear womens' clothing
And seering sandblows up our skirts!

(Ren joins with Stimpy)
And the buzzards, they soar overhead
And poisonous snakes will devour us whole
And our bones will bleach in the sun

(Stimpy)
That's it!

(Ren & Stimpy)
And we will probably go to (censored)
And that is our great reward
For being the
Ro-oy-oy-al
Canadian Kilted Yaksmen!

(Stimpy)
C'mon everybody!

(Everyone)
Our country reeks of trees
Our yaks are really large
And they smell like rotting beef carcuses

And we have to clean up after them
And our sadle sores are the best
We proudly wear womens' clothing
And seering sand blows up our skirts

And the buzzards, they soar overhead
And poisonous snakes will devour whole
Our bones will bleach in the sun

And we will probably go to (censored)
And that is our great reward
For being the
Ro-oy-oy-al
Canadian
Kilted
YAKSMEN!

Tristan - Just my general preference. For whatever reason, my grouping stays tighter with the Colt, and my long range accuracey's more consistant. Not to mention, the Colt's slightly more compact, and I have (unfortunately) tiny hands.

My dad's complained about the Colt jamming up on him, but I haven't had the same problem. But no, neither one's modified.

I also have a shuriken, a naginata, and a scythe that I forgot to mention earlier. Okay, so the scythe's not really a weapon, but it looks very ominous in the corner of my bedroom.

JonnyQuest - I have a few not so good ones...

About half the weapons depicted here are mine

My Hanwei Daisho, "Kage no Aki" and the Wakizashi

I'll work on getting some better one's, and some of the firearms if you'd like. Shouldn't take more than a day or two.

Place my body on a ship and burn it on the sea,
Let my spirit rise, Valkiries carry me.
Take me to Valhalla where my brothers wait for me.
Fires burn into the sky, my spirit will never die.

I know this one's not that long, but given that all 80-odd posts happened in a shortish space of time, I'm starting a new thread just to prevent this one being overloaded. If you want to keep posting weapon pics, do so here.

For a new ponderance, head to the new thread at http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=24902

A friend of mine is a blacksmith and carpenter. I'm a medieval historian. So between us, we had the idea to build a catapault. Since he also grew pumpkins, we had a nice supply of ammo lined up, too.

Except our respective partners got wind of the plan, and we were forbidden to play together anymore.

BTW, CMH, I love proper Japanese weaponry. I used to work for a man who collected antique blades - looking through the catalogues for him was akin to weapon-porn.

Here it is. BabySis wants nothing to do with you. She is really depressed and wishes you'd leave her alone. I've been told of your abusive behavior toward her and I ain't one to make threats but understand the implications of your actions. Please discontinue any further attempts to contact her or drastic action may be taken. As I am sure you've seen my pics and demonstration of only a small amount of my ability I'm sure you understand the action I am more than willing to take for the safety and security of my family.
Go in a good way.
Joe

See *sigh* this is why I always wanted a big brother… you are awesome NVG! Why aren’t there more men like you in the world…?

Ok, update on my maybe-not-so-non-existant-love-life
Nothing going on at the mo, since its the holidays, but, on the last day, I was sat on my own in physics and he came and sat with me, and invited me to a party, which sadly I had to decline, because of going to see Ross Noble, so we'll have to see what happen after the holidays. Also, I've been thinking, and I'm pretty sure the ass- side of him is your general showing off and "look at me I'm so macho" thing" that unfortunately every teenage boy suffers from. Things could be looking up...

Ooooh – I was thinking along those – silly boy needs attention and affirmation of other silly boys attitude… shame you had to say no – but Ross Noble is, at least, a very good reason to miss out!!! LOL! I love Ross Noble! Keep us posted SBDB!

Oh – and as far as trolls – I try not to engage them… but I see the redeemable side in some of them and make the mistake of actually talking with them like they were… you know… people! Then I get kicked in the gut and now I think I don’t like them at all… Kaneman is a female – I’m pretty certain of that – and probably the same person as the freak River126 or whatever that was! I’m just going to skip over their posts all together from now on… specially since I actually read something foul that Kaneman said about my truly gorgeous cousin who was in a photo I posted of myself a while ago… *OK – not getting upset…*

And NVG – you totally rock!! Go you!! The B’Bappers will give you a 2 for one discount ifyou want us to deal with BabySis’s ex & your Miss-Guided-Slut-Bitch-from-hell… (oooh – did I type that out loud? )

Oh - I think that's all I had to say on the previous thread... I think...

Better read this one now...

Don't look unduly small in the first pic...

Love to see whate'er you're willin' ta display. Seen some very shiny collections here. Mine, not so much. The "weapons" I have, besides a pen mightier than Excalibur and a tongue honed to a razor sharp edge, comes down to a few inherited items with multiple uses, something with training wheels and a replica.
T
o wit: From my dad I got a machete and a bullwhip, from my father-in-law I got an awesome scythe, real old-timey stuff that was probably his dad's and a broke double-barrel shotgun (don't know the make off the top of my head--all this stuff is in storage at the moment, but maybe someday soon I can drag 'em out for a photo shoot). I have a set of foam-covered practice nunchakus that a friend of mine who used to teach Tai Kwon Do and worked in a martial arts store gave me, rarely used. And finally a fake pirate's flintlock fer decoration in our pirate themed living room (looks cool by our Jolly Roger Tavern sign). Once upon a time ago, I had a .45 automatic squirtgun that was so authentic looking only the bright red rubber sprayer nozzle would give it away, and even then you'd have to be looking "down the barrel" (that wasn't there...). They most Certainly don't make 'em like that anymore.

Pretty pathetic, huh?

Neat that the pix you share are in context. Really brings the feel across. (Did I really just say "NEAT"??

EDIT: Just saw the next crop of pics you posted while I was composing this. Verrrrry nice. Not too white-trashy; just a hint of it...

"Well, here I am...Does that seem fair to you?"
