KANEMAN

We are a very diverse group. My guess is 9-89 years of age. I can be funny to some and a troll to others. There have been some young ones that get caught in the cross fire of adult conversations. I am as guilty as anyone, but not alone. Let's mark our threads/posts:
A-Adult
E- everyone

I would say posts also..that way if I want to tell someone off..I can start my post with an A:
If it's a post free of adult language or theme , a simple E: at the start would let younger browncoats know that area of the verse is okay........any thoughts?

I think it's a great idea. No need to go corrupting the little ones anymore than we already have...

I suppose this might be in reaction to the way the "masturbating" thread escalated...

Poor Rio.

I agree with your proposal.

But here's my concern. Will a rating actually stop the young'uns from getting involved? Will they really stop themselves "contributing". I'm sure the majority of teens think they can handle almost anything. And that they understand all adult, subtle humor....(or comments intended to be adult, subtle humor)

And any mention of an adult discussion will surely attract them like flies. (sorry... bad imagery)

How will I (as an adult) know that the seriously deranged comment I'm objecting to was made by a child and change my response accordingly.

So, I rather don't post on the off-topic, risky threads.

Firefly topics are safer. Also, I think, the purpose of this site.

I might be wrong. I'm new here.

JONNYQUEST

"Did he just go crazy and fall asleep?"

I was wondering about something like this, Kaneman. Glad you brought it up. (God, isn't there anything that's not a wank-reference?) I felt really bad about the turn things took in the thread yesterday and was pondering how to avoid things like that in the future. I had almost made an inappropriate comment to one of our female youngsters (which would have been laughed at by any of our adult female members had it been directed to her). At the last second I had the thought, "What do I really know about this person?" and bingo her profile saved all of us the embarrassment and subsequent criminal charges/civil lawsuits that would have ensued. Not to mention not being welcome here anymore. ("PERV!! Don't talk to me!!")

I think the options are pretty limited.

1) Rate the post, like Kaneman suggests. Cantor's counter is valid. If the word "Masturbation" didn't stop someone from either posting or lurking, I'm not sure an "A" would fare much better. And everyone would need to be made aware of the rating system for it to work. Who's keeping up on the new members? And how would we enforce it? And ultimately, what is offensive to whom? That's a lifetime career in the making.

2) Age must be listed in the profile. Not everyone willing to do that I reckon. Not to mention the ease of un-truthiness. But it puts the burden on the potentially offended member, rather than the poster, which is the object.

3) We don't freely express ourselves. Not really an option but needed to be mentioned.

4) We clearly designate Free and Restricted forums. Eh.

Having said all that, I do not object to Kaneman's idea; I just think there's no totally "safe" approach. I'm tired now. Somebody else want to pick this up?

"Well, here I am."

I don't know too much about how a board like this is administered, but I do think the profile thing could maybe be..uhm....encouraged?

I agree with JonnyQuest that this doesn't ensure truthfullness, but it does in a way protect us from being accused of being bad with/to minors.

And besides, its fun to know who you are responding to, and if you could get more info from a profile, you will sometimes understand a comment better, know where the poster is coming from.

RAINSTICK

i can see where people are coming from but how do you want to enforce that? even if you designate threads with E and A that doesn't prevent youngsters from looking up the threads anyway, unless you require some form of identification. which of course they could quickly circumvent.
also, what exactly do you want to protect the underage fans of firefly/serenity from? they obviously have seen the series and the movie, otherwise they wouldn't be here. so they have seen the leading actor shoot unarmed men in cold blood, other incidents of violence, we have "space whores" who we also see in the act (Inara/clients, Mal/Nandi). we have had other sexual issues alluded to, such as homosexuality (Inara/Councillor, or the boywhores), and masturbation (Jayne's "I'll be in my bunk" and Kaylee's "nothing that weren't run on batteries" - comments). and there's is of course the very violent cannibalistic reavers and the very brutal torture of mal in "War stories". neither violence nor sex has been excessive but it's there in the series for everyone to realize what is going on. i don't see anything potentially more harmful going on in any of the threats.

"also, what exactly do you want to protect the underage fans of firefly/serenity from?"

Glad you asked.. I would like to tell someone to go f*ck off without it being a 10year old... call me selfish...never mind the threads about masturbation, ones with pictures of Citizen, or sex in general, they tend to get out of hand(no pun intended)....
