I got fed better in Basic Training than at any point in my entire life. Every morning there was bacon, sasuage links, sausage patties, french toast, waffles, pancakes, eggs, a fruit bar, OJ, and milk available. You usually only had about 5 minutes to eat it, but them's good eatins in any case.

Also, MRE's kick ass. If you save up 7 rations of sugar and add it to the fruit drink mix, it actually tastes like fruit drink and not just flavored tap water. Mix in the coffee packets with chocolate mix, 3 sugars and some creamer, and you got yourself a tastey treat with some kick to keep you awake. I tried to make Ranger pudding once... I wouldn't recomend that anyone else try.

Oh yeah, and the oil from the peanut butter makes a disturbingly good booster compound for explosive trains and main bursting charges.

I've noticed some brands have more of that than others...good to know. Kinda like reading the ingredients of individually sliced and wrapped processed "cheese" food product.

MREs were the best!

Most people in my unit didn't like them. When we were deployed we ate them 2 meals a day. Most of the guys would give them to me cause they couldn't stand them so I would eat a whole weeks worth a day. (For those of you uninformed, MREs are Meals Ready to Eat. They had a main dish (spegetti, beaf stew, ham steak, omlete, BBQ pork, and such) Crackers and either cheese foo or peanut butter, some kind of desert, a fruit beverage (like Kool Ade), instant coffee, and condiments. Oh and have over 3000 calories a pack. I was the only one when we deployed somewhere that would actually keep up their weight. I ate any where from 4 to 8 a day.

I actually took 4 cases home when I ETSed and gave one case to my dad for camping. Man I miss those things!

My Uncle said he'd a taken the German breakfasts while stationed there. They were stuck with MRE's and (Urg) C rats while the Germans had a fricken chuck wagon breakfast. But DATs ain't known for their brains now are they.

JQ- Yes, there is a bowl. I know. It took me a minute or two to notice.

MSG- Ifigure it this way. I've lucked out several times already so chances are some DOuche Bag squid will be having the good weekend. Not that I actually believe that, but somethings up doncha think?

My first and only deployment, we got one MRE a day and that was it. Like you, I was one of the only guys in my detatchment who actually liked the damn things, but if you didn't eat, you starved, so it was a no-go on the sharing. You wouldn't beleive how a pack of Skittles made some people's day... "I'm gonna taste the f'n rainbow!", we used to say, with all matter of legitimate enthusiasm.

Even had this one line of a BS cadance we made up:

"So now I'm in the sandbox,
Eatin an MRE.
I've got some peanut butter,
I'll trade ya for some cheese."

yes NV I think something is seriously up...I shall await developments. But I'm hoping we're just paranoid.

CMH- yeah that peanutbutter explosive thing has the same slightly creepy feeling as watching diet coke clean rust of something fast. It's always vaguely disconcerting when your food has some industrial useage. As for MRE's I haven't tasted but one and it wasn't my kind of thing. I can totally see how it can come in handy or be nostalgic. Cute cadence:) My friend ( strangely also named Chris) is a S.E.A.L and he once nearly got decked by a C.O. for one of his. The C.O.'s wife had lost quite a bit and he made this up for her
The big fat lady used to dine
Now she's looking mighty fine
Sound off ( ok you know the rest)
Co went through the roof. CO's wife loved it so that's what saved him

Kelkhil- ah I see you're one of those truly evil individuals who eat like 5000 calories a day and that's just to keep weight on...My brother is that way. While I languish on 1600 calories to keep weight off...please don't make me kill you:) HUGS I am kidding and not mad, merely envious.

NVG - DATs eh.... Hmm Hey CMH you want to tell ole NVG what a 19K10 is? (For those who missed it that was my MOS)

JK NVG - I actually named my tank the DAT-Mobile.

I thought of showing off my ride in the pictures thread when you all were comparing military pictures a while back but I did not have a good shot of my 68 ton baby.

Edit: MSG - Not so much any more. Did I mention that I am up to around 190 lbs. Hoody-hoo! Been my goal to hit 200 since I was like 15. Tired of being able to see my ribs through a sweater.

DAT-mobile. HA! My Uncles M60A3 was named Beowulf.

And yes folks I too am waiting for further developments on the whole thing before I pass solid judgement.

As for the crackers and peanut butter, I was taught to shoot with it. My Uncle was a really big follower of Carlos Hathcock. He'd take me on day long rabbit hunting trips with nothing but a rifle, five twenty two shells, a jacket, and the John Wayne crackers and peanut butter from his left over firefighting MRE's.

P.S.- the chicken ala king is the shiznit.

Man, this has been a lot to catch up on.

RiverTwin: Welcome! LOl,if I'd been lopsided, most of my frinds would have just said, 'hey, fix your b**bs.'

MsG: Those scary stats you posted are a part of why I'm middle-aged, single and no longer looking. The other part is my older sister's bad luck when she was first dating. First guy turned into a jerk, then the next year some guy she worked with started stalking her and following her home. Dad stopped that by going and having a conversation with the guy...which included having his service pistol during the conversation. (This was 1980, no stalking laws then.) I seem to have learned too well from her problems.

And...whip them kids into shape! I haven't said it before, but huzzzah to folks like you and NVG for helping kids so much!

Beards, Goatees and lip ferrets: as long as it's well kept, I like looking at it, but feeling it is something entirely different and not for the good.

5 O'Clock Shadows: Look sexy as hell, but feel just awful.

Clean shaven: Looks and feels mighty fine. Actually I've got a thing for square jaw lines which is hard/impossible to see with too much facial hair.

Make-up: doesn't matter how little blush I use, I look like I belong in the clown parade as I've very fair skinned. It also makes me break out even more. The rare times I put make up on, it's lipstick, eye shadow and mascara.

NVG: Good luck with things this weekend. *hugs*

CMH: thanks for saying why no facial in the military. I hadn't realised why, but it does make good sense. It is the same for the short hair or is there another reason as I kinda recall something about the shortness being due to help prevent 'personal livestock' issues or is it for a completely different reason?

I think this is it.

Did I post yet today? I don't think I did, but I can't remember...must be old age.

Hi to imponderable newbies...

Undies on guys: boxer briefs are sexiest, IMO.

Facial hair: I like some sort of goatee or stubble. Clean shaven is okay, too. Beards = not so much. Mustaches = no.

Um, what else? People said good stuff on learning how to not be a victim. don't feel I need to say anything more.

And with that, I'm outta here for the day. Bye all! Oh, and a good morning to Magda and good evening to PR when they re-join the waking.

no... no... it's almost midday Friday here... Uh Oh - I really have to get going!!

Hello ponderers... Hi DTH - I came back! And look what happens - NVG gets phone calls from... hmmm I'm with you MsG! Ms Indelible... Good luck NVG!

HUGS MsG!! I'm thinking of you - sending you 'big sister' vibes... You're the sweetest!!

Hi Rugbug!, JQ, RMMC, oh and Rivertwin!! I have done the same thing - in a theatre dressing room - it is where you are I think that counts not just who you're 'adjusting' - in a dressing room or at a Ren Faire there must be more allowance than... say - if I did it to someone at church...??

CMH - I did not realise that about facial heair in the military either - but it makes so much sense - all those officers with the trimmed beards and mo's in WWI... and none thereafter... thanks you for that!

Got to go now - I will be home to ponder some more in a few ours - though I know you'll all be asleep...

Did anyone else miss Tristan today? Poor things sick so send him good vibes (I must be out with my forsaken voodoo thingy - it wasn't meant to kick in until Saturday...) No seriously - hope you're feeling better soon Tristan!!

Catch you later all! - Magda x x x

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

'Morning everyone! Let's see what I missed. *will reply as she reads*
Hmmmm, being only a very casual studier of psychology, I don't know if this is an accurate explination, but it's what I've drawn from what I've read: The idea that people look for partners that are similar to their parents has to do with role models, early development, and the commitments formed by the unconscious mind. The father, for instance, is the example of 'a man who loves me' so a woman grows up and looks for that, and also draws it to her. This doesn't have to be the way it is, but it can take a lot of work to break through some of those commitments formed as a child. Hope that made some sense.
I agree that some men look better with facial hair. I guess as long as it's not sandy (as was pointed out, that is bad) it can be alright. I just love smooth skin, though.
I must extend a welcome welcome to RiverTwin as well, hopefully it doesn't get lost in what promises to be a long, long response.
I totally forgot about the underwear question for men until Rugbug brought it back up! Ha! Well, I think I've said before, but I don't mind saying again that nothing is sexier than silk boxers. I ruttin' LOVE silk, and boxer form seems to be the only way men get away with wearing it, and it is just so gorramn... touchable.
Morning jie-jie! Look, I'm up!

Short hair is practical for many reasons.

It's low maintainence, never looks messy, much less chance of bugs/lice etc, quick and easy to clean, provides one less possible place for people to grab you during a fight (okay, so these days most people aren't going to be getting themselves into a fight, especialy not one that involves grabbing someone by the hair and slamming their face into a wall/desk/bar/vehicle). Additionally, for those of us who's hairline is receding, short hair means we can't be accused of growing comb-overs.

For those of us in the CFS who are trained to use Breathing Apparatus, we have specific guidelines about facial hair. Like CMH said, you need to be able to create a good seal, so no beard or sideburns, and any moustache needs to be short, and neatly trimmed.

19K's Armor Crewman, I was considering going 19D when I re-enlisted myself. 19 series is really popular for some reason. I personally don't think it'd be all that much fun dealing with giant machines when it came time to fix em, clean em, and get em unstuck.

Morning All!

CMH - Maint is not very hard on an M1. 4 Bolts, a few cables and the Trans Axel (another 2 bolts) and the engine pulls right out. Really easy.
Cleaning it is a little tougher but it always seems to be.

Thing to concider with that vehicle though - There is nothing on the Battlefield that any other country has besides a direct Artillary round strike that can stop an M1. Notice I said Battlefield. Iraq is a different story. Lost a few old friends there due to IEDs.

Hi Mags Would wave but I don't have an e-mote for that.

Thank you Mavourneen! I do appreciate it - though I think I am going to bed now - I know it's not even midnight - but I think I caught something - did one of you cough on me? I am taking all my herbal remedies and going to bed early.... well it's early for me!

Oh - and a quirky thing about me - there were two teachers in my past who were both Ms's and they were both overbearing and selfish and didn't like people holding different oppinions to them - at least that's the overwhelming impression I got - so I disliked the title 'Ms' because I associated it with each of these women... It is an irony in that I am strongly in favour of male/female equality that I prefer the title Miss - but then again I am also a trained and experienced actor and women in the theatre traditionally retain 'Miss' as their title... little bit of trivia and another piece of the weird and wonderful puzzle that is me!

Love you all imponderers... your Magda x x x
