In the entertainment business why does the government always have to be good or bad?

In Firefly we see the Alliance with the assumption that it is the bad guy, and granted after the BDM I won't argue.

On the other hand shows like Star Trek take the government for granted as the good guy.

In reality, I find governments are rarely good or bad (yes there are examples but rarely). They have good points but they also have bad points.

The government fails in respect to some people, but succeeds for others. I don't agree with everything the Canadian government does, but I don't necessarily disagree with it or condemn it.

In Firefly / Serenity, the government itself isn't bad per se, it's just trying to do too much, for too many people. There are, however, certain elements (sub-committees, research labs like The Academy and some corporations) who can be labelled as 'bad'.

In other shows, this can also be the case, such as Stargate SG-1. While the government may have the best intentions (defending the earth), the way they go about it, and the way certain special interest groups act might be construed as being bad.

This is more an accurate representation of real life than we might like to think. After all, we all know where the road paved with good intentions leads.

If you find yourself getting too worked up about stuff that isn't real (RP Threads etc), then go outside, breathe in some fresh air and try feeding the ducks. (Because ducks don't care about your politics, religion, skin colour, choice of music or even your haircut. They like everyone, provided you bring them food.)
