Morning, Imponderable-ers!
I had a busy weekend, so I did not get a chance to check in...not to mention that my home computer is having issues.

Chicken dance...hmm.

Ok, that's disturbing...I need more coffee.

You'd better make it a strong one Sweetheart!

Here you go... ... all the way from Starbuck!!

Hey - you're letting us get that stuck in our little brains again... still!! You know I'm going to go to bed with that in my mind, VerseExplorer!! I thought you were my friend???

Hello Mei Mei how're you going today - I am on the brink of falling asleep at the computer too... but I want to catch the news before I go to sleep!

Do you have those dreaded exams coming up ShinyKitten? Nico had one today I think... and when will we see a photo of you over at the latest photo thread??

Edit: ooops - sorry Penguin! I love the dancin' T-Rex... 'my 2 boys' would too - did I tell you all that they both want to be called Little Wash since they saw the pilot episode - he's their hero 'coz he is a grown up who plays with dinosaurs... he's so very cool! (& they both quote that scene at least 3 times a day!!!)

Missed you in Haven jie-jie!
I might just fall asleep early again today. Nothing in particular happened, but it was kind of a bad night. I definitely felt like this:

Going back to work is the worst. And my emotions were just... not the most stable. I could use a sleep retreat. I should bathe, though. Bathing is important.

Morning, All.

**Columbus Day in a Furniture Store...ACK!**

Why has Columbus Day become the preferred day for people to buy furniture?

An open apology to my Fellow Imponderers:

I'm sooo sorry I inserted Safety Dance into your brains, which somehow morphed into the Chicken Dance within 100+ thread replies.

You'll be happy to know Instant Karma attacked me on Saturday for my wicked ways, and I have been singing "Birdhouse in your Soul" by They Might Be Giants for nearly 48 hours.

Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch
Who watches over you
Make a little birdhouse in your soul
Not to put too fine a point on it
Say Im the only bee in your bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in your soul

So this is way after the fact, but that's where my screen name comes from. It's a combination of Rugcutter and Jitterbug. ;)

Zeek, if you don't like to dance, that's fine. But if you did like to dance, or could tolerate it enough to learn how to be proficient, I'm saying there is plenty of a point. It's like being a good conversationalist, or being the right kind of funny, or kind and considerate. Just one more thing to get the girls to sit up and take notice. And the pickins get wider because you become more desirable. (And PS, those geeky swing dancing guys usually have a personality to go with the dancing b/c they've spent most of their life in the background...just like the sci-fi geeks).

Night my lovely Magda. Sleep well and peacefully with a big bright star looking down on you:)

Morning all- ok this cold is annoying. Not really sick, just stuffed up, tired, and a bit dizzy. ARGH! which is just what I need for dealing with kids..however the airborne is really helping so:)

That was a profoundly long weekend with extra company ( unexpected drop by brother in law to stay for weekend. He got his dates crossed and came a week early and since he drove 8 hours to get to us we couldn't really send him home.) I hate when you want ot be sick on a weekend and lie in bed and someone is a guest at your house so you just have to be all cheerful and energetic anyway ( which is likely why the cold's still here) ANYWAY enough whining and such!

On the plus side, I got my brother in law to watch Firefly and he like sit so we're buying him the box set for Christmas:) Another convert...yippee

As for pondering- Do you think women feel more pressure to wait on and be hospitable to guests???

Safety dance, chicken dance, hokey pokey...

See, this, this is what happens when I don't check in for a while. Heaven forbid someone suggests the macarena...

This isn't really an imponderable, but I've been having a rough time in school (I'm in my third year of college), and am starting to consider taking a break for a semester. Does anyone have some insight into the topic? Any ideas would be greatly appreaciated.

Tristan- John Lennon was a wise man.
Funny, someone once told me my Superhero name is "Karma Girl" because I generally have pretty good luck (and do believe in Karma) - Maybe not so much this past weekend. But, I do love a good TMBG song.

DeepGirl- Taking a semester off can either be
1) extremely goal clarifying
2) the end of your college career

Depends on how you use the time, I guess. I know people who took time off to clear their heads and came back to school with renewed vigor. I also know people who went into the workforce and never went back to school. My advice: Make a list of the pros and cons of leaving school. What do you expect to get out of leaving? How will you attain that goal? Look at yourself - Would you go back?

Unexpected guests, MsG? Yuck. I always feel intense pressure to be the hostess with the mostess - and I always end up not enjoying their company, but resenting it.

Deepgirl- I would agree with Mavoureen. My sister took a semester off and 5 years later she's married with a kid and only that one semester ( actually just her senior thesis) shy of graduating and she has never gotten around to it.I think if you pre-register for the semester after it and have it all set to force yourself back in, that it can be a great refresher. I always wished I had taken one off...I went to school the first summer I was out of high school and just kept going and by the end I was a bit burned out:)

That was one of the highlights of my trip to New York last year - visiting the John Lennon garden in Central Park. I got there just as a guy was finishing up laying rose petals on the "imagine" mosaic in the shape of a peace symbol. He does it every day "for peace and love and John Lennon!" He gets the petals from the gardeners, who have to pick them up every day from the grass.

Best of luck whatever you decide, DeepGirl! Time off can be pretty scary.

Deepgirl: I have to agree with whoever said it. Leaving school, even for one year, might be the end of it. For the first two years of Uni for me, the only thing which kept me going was the fact that I had to get up in the morning and be somewhere.
Approach the hiatus with all possible caution. Just my opinion in the matter, though.

Edit: on the subject of dancing... I love to dance, in the sense that i enjoy it, but i'm afraid i rarely find anyone to dance with... part of the reason i love my friends so much is cause they arent interested in anything that could be construed as high school cliche boy-girl things, so very rarely do I actually dance with someone else, which imo is the point.

TRAVELER

Hello Deepgirl187:

Stay the course. You will have plenty of time to relax after you finish your schooling. Keep going while you have the momentum. If you stop it will be hard to start again. Your nearly there so finish and then take a deep breath. You will feel much better if you do. If you have another idea for a career on your mind you can always continue along that path after you finish the one you are on now. Make education a part of your life, like your other interests and desires. There is plenty to learn out there. After you get your first degree there is nothing that says you can't get another one. When your young it is hard to decide what final career would satisfy you. But continuing the direction your in will help you make that choice. Stopping will not. You may be tired or having doubts but don't doubt what an education can give you. It give you experience. Experience you can carry over in any direction you want to go. And go you will because you kept up the momentum.

PS You guys are still talking about the chicken dance!!!

'Morning, everyone!
This talk of dancing and music has brought something up in my memory. Long time back someone, I think it was Odds, asked if there was any music that just made a female swagger. I think there is. "Superstitious" by Stevie Wonder. Maybe 'strut' is a better word that 'swagger'.
That was random, I know. I'm probably the only person to even remember that. My memory is like that, though.

'New Sensation' by InXS has always been one I can't stay still around - I even 'dance' in the car... but I'm not sure that's strutting per se...

Oh yes ShinyKitten!! ... but you forgot the imperative 'bush dancing'!!! all those folk-type-dances that the immigrants brought over with them in the mid-1800s... strip the willow, and ah... did any of the others have names? My Mum would know - but she's in the UK at the moment so...

aaaaawwwwww.... come here you poor wee hippie you... I was always picked last ... when I got picked that is ... and when I found a sport I actually enjoyed - either archery or tennis - I was 'punished' for not being 'athletic' and would be told that the kids who did well in other areas would be rewarded with the 'fun sports'...???

Scared me for life that one did!

But I am learning to kick an actual football courtesy of my 6-year-old charge!! He's so gorgeous and patient with me... and I also did get to dance with the geeks at high school - lets face it, none of the popular 'sporty' girls wanted to and they ended up dancing with the sweaty, smelly sports-oriented boys, while my best friend and I would dance with the boys wearing glasses who'd played D&D all lunchtime and so had their body odour under control...

Yes - there were momentary benefits...

Wasn't picked, never wanted to be. Though I would surprise a few people with how athletic I could be when I was in the mood. Confuzzled my gym teacher; he just didn't get that I was good at things I enjoyed and not good at things I didn't. He was one of the better gym teachers I ever had, though. The dances we learned in his classes involved jumping in and out of poles being clicked together. I picked up the patterns like a shot and I totally rocked at that activity. Could have happily done nothing else the whole year.
I was also decent at throwing, batting, and kicking. Not so much catching, though. *sigh*
And I didn't go to school dances.

I might have an imponderable, but I'm not sure yet...

In the final year that i had to do PE (think it was year 10, maybe first semester of year 11), I did golf, archery, pool (billiards) and lawn bowls. I'm still hopeless at kicking a football (I played soccer in primary school), and was always picked last for cricket (usually just a sub, spent most of the time on the bench).

I was good enough to be picked for the hockey and netball teams. I just didn't want to be. And watching the limited cranial misfirings of gym teachers confronted with that..."So...you want me to give up my free time, to spend it thrashing about in the mud and the cold, getting damaged and dirty in the company of people I wouldn't piss on if they were on fire?" "But...but...it's for the honour of the school." "No, thank you. I'd rather eat my own leg."

Not quite scarred for life by the experience. Of course, once I picked up a sword, it was a different story. Other folks may have ended up scarred by that.

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

I would love to learn to use a sword! I am going target shooting next moneth with one of my bestest friends who is a warrant officer in the Army! I last did that when I was 12 and did really well - I'm looking forward to seeing if I still have any skills!

I also did OK at archery - but didn't get to explore that... and now that I have done a few plays I would love to learn either archery or sword play! I also want to learn to ride a horse properly - I think I need to get Rugbug to teach me!

I wasn't so good at archery - I have a loose shoulder joint which makes aiming and drawing a bow tricky. But I can fight all three competition weapons - it's just that in my mind, I have a tendency to want to use boots and a dagger as well. My coach at my London club was an ex-stuntman and fight arranger (seen 'Willow'?) and he taught stunt fencing, too.

Been a long time since I rode a horse. And I've never had a chance to shoot - I'd like to, simply for the practical knowledge.

NICODEMUS

I'm left eye dominant, which means that while I do most things right handed, anything that requires precise aiming (shooting, archery) or just plain squinting (using a camera viewfinder, not that anyone does that these days with the digitals and their display screens), I have to do it left-handed.

If you find yourself getting too worked up about stuff that isn't real (RP Threads etc), then go outside, breathe in some fresh air and try feeding the ducks. (Because ducks don't care about your politics, religion, skin colour, choice of music or even your haircut. They like everyone, provided you bring them food.)
