I'm watching a show on Discovery HD channel called "The Emperor of the Steppes". It's about an archeological dig in Mongolia where they're unearthing the tomb of an emperor of an ancient civilization known as the Hsiung-nu.

I found it interesting that the hereditary title of the Hsiung-nu emperors was: Shanyu.

Coincidence? Or did Joss or one of the writers run across this title and adopt it as the name of the legendary warlord/philosopher Shan Yu?

I'm pointin' right at it!

Possible. But also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiang_Yu for an alternate source of the name.
