MINIME

I went to the Serenity 3 convention in London... the first thing I ought to say is THANK YOU to all the wonderful Brownboats who helped me navigate a very confusing experience. And were very nice. Awesome people to hang out with. Ta

I had a great time. Discovered that I become mush-brained and inarticulate and stupid around my heroes.

It was a wonderful experience, and if I had the opportunity to go to another one, I would.

At the end of the weekend, though, I was left with a funny feeling of... smallness... which is a first in my experience with the Firefly-verse. I think it's because, up till then, I had been able to (in my own brain) put myself in amongst the characters. Suddenly I was in a situation which demonstrates how distant we are from the people who play our heroes. How much of an honour it is to spend even a very short time speaking to them. And during the convention, I felt grand... but when I was falling asleep in my hotel room afterwards, I felt small. I had the small, petty thought - I reattached a guy's whole hand once (well, maybe not me, but I was part of a team of 3... and it wasn't his whole hand, his wrist was probably only 70% severed)... I don't even have a hamster.

Anyway, I'm ashamed of that thought. I am confused about how I felt about the convention. This is a very self-indulgent post.

I had a wonderful time!

Brownboats?

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the con. I wouldn't spend a whole lot of time pondering your feelings, though. You had a good time, met some fellow 'coats, and had a close encounter with our heroes. Hang on to that and never mind the rest!

Gotta love common sense... thanks. I needed that.

Yeah, Brownboats. Have you not heard of us? Navy division of the Independence movement.

cheers,

minime,
There's a phenomenon I've heard called
"post-Con depression" -- could you have
been suffering from a variety of that?
I think a lot of Con-goers experience a
form of coming down at various intervals
after the festivities are over. Yours
is described in more specific terms, but
might fit into the general condition.
'Sides, our BDHs aren't really any bigger
than we are -- on average.
If I had a hamster I'd name it after you.
Wrists are complicated.

Thanks Doc - I think it's possible you've diagnosed my condition accurately! Is there a cure?

I know in theory that our BDHs are technically no bigger than we are, but after a weekend of what (at the end of it, anyway) felt like Jaynestown-style hero-worship, I was starting to wonder...

Loveyour signature!

Minime,

Cure? Well... Maybe more cons as available,
spend time looking at con photos and planning
costume(s) for next time(s). Practice taking
photos in poorly lit venues so you can put up
your own album for us.
Oh, and watch Firefly and Serenity whenever
you can, with friends you can infect with our
special feeeev-ah!

My con baptism was last year's Flanvention. I didn't get depressed afterwards. But that could be that I was sick as a dog! (I caught the flu, or a very bad cold. After my flight home landed I was hardly able to walk because my head was so congested, and my inner ears were sorta whimsical...)

Hehe, DonCoat!

You were probably just suffering from the
return to gravity. (See recent collapsing
astronaut)

Come to think of it, what could be a better
international disease vector than a con?
Hordes of people in close quarters, many
already tired from getting there, staying up
too late, eating/drinking in groups,
circulating, and then bearing home not only
photos and autographs and the other (possibly
germy) stuff they bought but whatever micro-
organisms they shared with friends and flans...

How do the BDHs stay healthy, or do they?

Are there shots?
(she says, having had a flu shot this very day)

For those that are sick of body, you are experiencng Confluenza. I first heard about it before we went to DragonCon this year. It seems to be quite common. Luckily, it passed us by both this year and last.

For the mental letdown, I suppose it could just be the rush of endorphins leaving your system. We were able to stay an extra day in Atlanta this year, and that helped with the letdown. Still doesn't stop me from getting excited about next year, though!

Hope everyone is better now...

"Confluenza!" Brilliant. "Confluence" in
English, and thus quite perfectly descriptive
of the phenomenon.

So my estimate of the vectorishness of cons
is con-firmed, it seems.

Of course, don't we all know people who swear
they can't take a plane flight without coming
down with something? All those packed-together
bodies breathing the same air and touching
things for hour upon hour...eeeeeeek!

(Not to mention the diseases picked up when bare
feet touch airport floor -- apparently a valid
concern)

Fortunately escaped Con-fluenza... that would have been bad on top of post-con depression...
