After looking at the Serenity episode I have to wonder if that guy Captain Mel is good or bad. Plus, what's that frozen robot in the box when it ends? Some girl robot it looked like.

I can tell for sure the Preacher is the most boring character and he needs to go. There is too much religion on TV these days. He has no story he's just smiling about God, which is okay but not part of the the story of space and aliens.

Plus, I didn't understand the scene of the wooden box of cherries that the preacher gave to the ship's counselor.

The young girl loved the cherries so much I assume there's some Freudian sex relationship between her and the old man, since the Cherry has been been a symbol of Virgins for a long time now.

His name is Book and he ends up not being boring at all. BTW: There are no aliens.

I think they were strawberrys and she isn't the ships counselor, she is a mechanic. Are we watching the same show???

I don't know strawberrys are the symbol of but I think she enjoyed them because they taste good.

I feel stupid because now I know I only watched half of the Serenity episode.

I will watch the other half soon, and return with more to say. I am pretty sure it wasn't strawberries, but please forgive my memory if it was. I have only just watched this show and I am sure many of you have been watching for weeks now.

Hey, give the guy a break, he only just started watching the show and only got HALFWAY through the pilot (probably didn't realize he had only downloaded half). If I was only able to watch the first half of serenity, I would be a little confused too.

Definitely watch the second half (with some friends!) and come back to discuss it! We'll be here and most of us will be happy to explain things or just talk about what you think about it!

Okay, let's see if I can help.

1) The Captain's name is Malcom Reynolds, so it's Mal, not Mel. If that's confusing, just refer to him as "captain tightpants".

2) He's good. He may seem like a grumpy old man at times, but he's funny and has a good heart, though sometimes driven by money. He's against the government and a theif, so if that's what you mean by "bad" then yes he is, but he's the hero of our show.

3) The girl in the box may seem like a robot because she's all surrounded with metallic stuff, but she's just as human as the next person.

4) Though it seems Book (the preacher) is boring at first, he has a big secret and a long history of something. Apparently it's not what we assume at first OR later.

5) Kaylee, the ship mechanic (not counselor or whatever) likes strawberries. She's young and fresh fruit I'm sure doesn't come easy to them out in the black.

6) Book doesn't die in the second half.

I hope that somewhat clears things up. In the Joss "da boss" Whedon world, things aren't usually explained right away, so it's easy to get confused, but don't worry, you'll 'make it out of the woods'. At least you get to see the pilot first, before the rest of the series!

Well, this thread is both very kind and very cruel. I'm not sure what to think. I saw a music video about a black man in a big poofie gray haired wig and I wonder if this is the same show. Same guy from Barney Miller back in the seventies.

I find it easier just to let others post because I think I said the wrong thing or something. I know that ManiacNumbero One is a male so sorry and I like to be correct about gender.

But if you people think that everyone whoe finds this website is a mind reader, no, you're not.

Just to make certain its clear if you didn't get it, they were strawberries, NO sexual enduendo there, just ew.(well, there was, but not after it was explained as she ate one)

Anyway, you're being terribly critical of half a pilot episode, especially as you didn't even(for example) understand who kaylee was yet.

At least finish the pilot episode of a show before you critisize it please.

I tried to be as nice as possible in this post(and avoid ranting), if I didn't, I apologize.

Okay, before I walk away from this completely:

Many here, including myself, were/are under the impression that you are not what you seem (a newbie to the show). That you are either a very clever troll, or a Browncoat having some fun pretending to be a troll who is pretending to be a newbie.

And if none of that means a damned thing to you, and we were mistaken and you really are a potential new fan, my most humble apologies for not taking you seriously. And: welcome, enjoy the show! We Browncoats can be a nice bunch (evidenced by those who took you at face value) when not paranoid of troll attacks.

But if that is wrong . . .

I'm curious...wouldn't most trolls get bored and leave if they were always greeted with polite, helpful interest in their becoming better acquainted with the show instead of defensive or argumentative flaming? After all, flame-wars is what feed trolls (especially when directed at the 'troll') I think if we just assume everyone is on the level, then it will be clear when someone is trying to cause trouble (and the best response, as always, is not to feed the trolls but let the mods -- in this case haken, I guess -- weed them out).

Just my $0.02 (present-day cost of a "nothing part", like say a catalyzing converter)

Huh.

Now isn't that something.

To our dear friend who statred this post. Please don't give up on our show. Understand these folk on this here board have had a vital part of them ripped from their soul when this show was taken from the airwaves. Yes, we take our show that seriously. I make it a point to introduce all my friends to Firefly. There is so much to this show. The situations may not be 100% justified as real, (though they are a far cry from what we have been force fed as reality). But the people, they are real. Real hurt, Real Hereos, not because of special powers, just because they choose not to quit. As you continue watching you'll learn to love each and everyone of these characters. Definately don't buy them all at face value, they are human, they make mistakes, they all face faith in their own way. That's part of what makes us all human. Trust me noone is here to go ripping apart anyone just because they are learning. But hey, you ever got any questions, ask. I'll be glad to help. Firefly isn't my life, but it sure made a difference in it. And as Joss said "It's just a TV show, but then again alot of people say the Bible is just a book, it depends on what it means to you. B. He smiles more about people, not about God and the people he knows about would make your toenails curl.

C. Space, yes. People in space, abso-blooming-lutely. Aliens? Not so much. Are you sure you're watching Joss Whedon's Firefly?

Hi, Everyone. I have a big confession to make. I'm pretty sure Haken is going to kick me off his site when he finds out. This time, I have crossed the line and there's no turning back.

I, Succatash, created the user "Fudge Hyena" for mischievious purposes. If you say it five times real fast it sounds like "vagina." I alone am responsible for cruelly tricking kind Browncoats into trying to help someone who doesn't exist. Someone who appeared to be stupid, who needed help. Someone who never really wondered if Mel is good or bad.

To all of you who responded kindly to Fudge Hyena- You should be proud. You are good people.

Sorry for what I did. I hope I never do it again. If Haken decides to kick me out forever, I understand. But... if I get a second chance I promise to teach others not to do it too.

Happy Thanksgiving

I cooked up a big crap hot dog and fed it to everyone, and I’m really sorry.

I hope everyone knows how seriously I take Firefly and the Browncoat Prime Directive of returning the series to television. The last thing I want to do is offend newcomers, and the FFF members who come here all the time.

I still have a lot to learn, and every day is a new adventure! I’m glad you are all my friends and can teach me along the way.

Which gets into the definition of good and evil. A question that has plagued philosophers from time immemorial.

I think that as long as you ain't hurting nobody, nor scaring the horses, you are doing alright. And that anybody includes yourself too. If you are hurting yourself, that ain't good. If you are hurting others, that ain't good neither.

A lot of times our views of good and bad, right and wrong, depend on our perspective. What I consider good may not be good for you. A friend of mine finds jumping out of perfectly good airplanes a good thing. Me, I wouldn't enjoy it, and if I were to get hurt, it would affect my family and kids in ways that would be bad for them.

You gotta treat folks the way you want to be treated, in order to encourage them to treat you the same way. You act like a jerk toward folks, they'll treat you like a jerk. Which would be bad for you, whether you are really a jerk or not.

I think Mal is basically good, does what he thinks is in the best interest of himself and his crew, which he takes a personal responsibility for. Screw laws or moral conventions, he sticks with what he sees as higher laws and rules.
