REVRIGGS

Hi everyone.

I haven't been on the boards for awhile, make that a LONG while, so I'm not sure if this has been brought up before or not but has anyone thought about actually starting some kind of collection to help produce a sequel? Obviously it would take somewhere in the realm of what the original movie cost ($40 million I believe) so this isn't an easy thing to do but I think that if everyone bans together and gets people to donate $100, 50, 20, even just $5 we could do it. I was talking with my friend's dad who's an accountant and setting everything up wouldn't be that difficult so I think we should do it.

I know that there is the poll on the main page about "How much would you donate?" so I know that the thought is already out there. Anyone know of anything that has already started or, if there isn't one, if this would be a realistic thing to talk about? Any suggestions?

Yeah, it's been brought up many, many times

It seems that there are legal reasons why it would not be possible for fans to fund a sequel. It sucks.

not lazy just don't care (about anything but Firefly)

Somebody tried last year, but one of the Firefly producers got them to close it down.

No studio or network would take donated money for legal reasons I'm afraid.

First off, I think that this idea isn't exactly viable.

But, if one was to do this, what about if the fans set up a venture capital? That should clear up a lot of legal issues.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I don't pretend to be up on the legalities of such things, but SigmaNunki's suggestion seems sound. If it cleared up legal issues and the other details could be worked out, I would gladly donate as much as I can spare for a sequel.

Wait, what do they call the financial backers of movies? That's all we'd have to be. Get that title, and they won't care who got the money.

Maybe if we ask for cut it would be different ;)

I believe the going rate is about $50m.

I think at this point the best way is to put your $100 towards another few copies of Serenity, and some of the official merchandise that is out there now (it needs to be 'official' otherwise the money won't necessarily go to Universal).

As far as I know, all the stuff on 'Things from Another World' is licensed - they have some t-shirts and stuff ( http://www.tfaw.com/Search?_results_sstring_search=serenity&qt=ss_sere
nity468&SSAID=154541
) and the replicas that will soon be available from Qmx are also licensed.

RevRiggs,

As others have said funding a Serenity sequel was tried earlier and the website refunded all the money.

From what I remember. Hollywood is not ready for fans funding movies. Hollywood does not want to deal with millions of bosses. Hollywood is scared of the concept and will run away from any project or director involved in fans funding a movie.

If Joss Whedon feels Hollywood is ready and if he wants to go this route, he will tell us. Until he does that, there is only the possibility that we will actually hurt a Serenity II's chances.

Hollywood does not have a problem coming up with the money for movies. They just want to make a profit.

If you want to help Serenity make a profit:

Spread the word about Firefly and Serenity. More people fall in love with it, more DVDs get sold and more people will get in line to see the sequel.

Check with your local libraries and if they don't have them, ask them to purchase Firefly and Serenity. Or if they put donations in circulation, donate them.

See http://www.whedonverse.org

If you know 25 Browncoats who will pay to see Serenity on the Big Darn Screen, find a theater and ask them to screen Serenity.

A movie theater will show an older movie if they are sure they will make a profit. They need to know enough people will show up. And theaters make must of their profit on refreshments. That is why beer and pizza theaters love Browncoats and Serenity. We know how to Shindig! Midnight shows or non-peak hours or days are also a good possibility for showing Serenity.

Here is the Official Universal Serenity stuff I have come across and wrote down:

I agree that supporting licensed merchandise is the most straight forward way to support the movie. I've bought 8 copies of the BDS and BDM, and a Serenity T-shirt. I also rented Serenity once before I bought it.

I've also bought the Donetheimpossible DVD as well as one other T-shirt from Cafepress. I don't think those two purchases helped the cause as much (at least not the T-shirt).

These help by spreading the word about Serenity and Firefly. It gets people interested in Firefly/Serenity. And also keeps us interested in Firefly/Serenity.

Like going to see our Big Darn Heroes. Or going to a conventions in Serenity/Firefly wear or costumes. It doesn't put money in Universal's pockets. But it generates interest. Makes people take a second look at Firefly/Serenity.

And the Firefly Ariel Ambulance is touring conventions. http://www.arielambulance.org

There is also Firefly Official Merchandise which does not put money in Universal's pockets, but is shiny too!

Actually, one of the best things you can do is to watch the Firefly marathons when they come on SciFi, watch Serenity when it comes on HBO or pay-per-view.
The fans funding a movie thing isn't going to happen.
"Hollywood wants to make money."
Well, yeah.
Movie studios are corporations and they have shareholders. The corporation is legally obligated to make money for the shareholders. (See the movie "The Corporation" if you want to get some knowledge on how that works. It's a real eye-opener.)
If Uni...or any other studio...started greenlighting movies that weren't guaranteed to make money...LOTS of money, the shareholders would have people's heads. Art or no art.
You want to support Firefly? You want to get a sequel to Serenity?
Support the existing product.
And let the studios know that you're interested in more.
Speaking of which: isn't Thank Universal Day coming up soon?
P.S.
It's Big DAMN Heroes.

I concur with everyone that says a fan-financed movie isn't going to happen, but...

It is happening elsewhere. Remember Tim Brazeal, the guy that raised over 3 million dollars to try and stop Star Trek: Enterprise from being cancelled? And was turned down by the studio? Well, he and Jon Caras, a Hollywood producer, have set up a place called Scifi Studios. To point of which is to get fans involved in the creation of new scifi TV shows and movies. There was a lot of suspicision that this was a ploy to take your money, but I've been hanging out there for several months now and it seems on the level. Not really relevant to the task at hand, but just thought I'd mention it.

Soon Serenity will be on HBO-on-demand which means HBO viewers can request to see Serenity when they want for free or no additional HBO charge.
