Everyday I run into at least one person who has to be all negative and put down this kick ass show.

The funny part is that they HAVENT EVEN SEEN IT!

Whenever I offer to show it to them, they give me the "I'm busy" excuse or just plain "I'm not watching that crap."

How many of these people do you all encounter on a daily basis?

I've not encountered that as much as you have, it seems, but I've seen some negativity.

The biggest problem people seem to have is they think the idea of a "space western" is stupid. Of course, I have to explain to them that the show is less about "space western" than they think, but they're still loathe to watch.

On the other hand, I have found a lot of people who originally say that our BDS/BDM can't live up to the sci-fi they already like (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek), but once I make them sit and watch even just the first 2-3 episodes, they're hooked.

None. Then again, I don't really go out.

All these people are, are IRL trolls. Personally, if I ran into one, I'd ask them if they've seen it (which you've done). And when they say no, I'd offer to show it to them (again, which you've done). And when they say refuse, I'd point out the stupidity of hating something that they know absolutely nothing about... politely.

SigmaNunki, I like the way you think. I have not had much chance to do any converting of my own, but my thoughts are pretty much along those lines.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I've encountered the most resistance from people who run away at the mere mention of science fiction.

All my immediate friends are receptive to sci-fi and love Firefly. They don't get involved in the fandom like I do, but more than one have said that they depend on me to keep them up to date. I'm the go to for getting together for screenings and the latest news. It feels nice to be needed.

TRAVELER

I am a lousy salesman so I don't push Firefly on anyone because I would probably chase them away instead of bringing them into the fold. I did give one person my DVD's and they enjoyed it, but it did not make them a Browncoat. I have heard one guy at work mention the SciFi channel so I'm thinking of sneaking Firefly into the conversation next time he brings up that channel.

As for people bad mouthing Firefly. I am like the rest of you. I really can not figure out why. Sometimes I think it strikes to close to home for some people. It does focus more on the characters and their personalities than it does science fiction. So maybe they see some flaw in one of the characters that reminds of themselves and they don't want to see it.

Otherwise I am at a loss as to why people do not like this show. It could be they have watched so much Star Trek they believe that it is the only proper space travel science fiction. But I think that is too simple an excuse.

I will leave it to better minds than my own to figure out. I just don't waste my time arguing over it. I find most people don't listen to you, even if you have the better case.

I envy you people who can win over new Browncoats. I wish I had your salesmanship.

hmmm see I have chosen to go with the captive audience approach...I make my students watch snippets and such and convert them. They'd never tell me they hated it 'cause they're too fond of me to hurt my feelings ( they know what a nut I am over the show)

Make sure he knows Sci-Fi is running an eleven hour marathon this Monday, Sept. 18, beginning at 8am Eastern. "Serenity" (pilot) through "War Stories."

I think a lot of people's resistance is to the SF/Western concept. Either they don't like sci-fi at all, or they are purists that think SF=high tech. In much the same way there are still those who turn up their noses at Buffy and Angel. I should know, because I once was one of them, but once I made the commitment to watch it from the beginning I fell in love with it as I did with Firefly.

Yeah, the friends I haven't been able to show it to aren't to fond of science fiction, so they think they know they're not going to enjoy it. Pshh.

I guess my biggest dissappointments are when I show it to people and they like it, but it's sort of forgotten after the credits role. It almost hurts more when someone only LIKES it instead of LOVING it. Although, I can't say I didn't try, and I guess it means my work here is not quite done.

So far my conversion score (not like anyone's keeping track, more of a personal goal)is:

Love (Browncoaty levels): 2
Like: 3
Still converting: 1

My biggest resistance has been one of my roommates. She doesn't want to watch becasue she likes teasing me with her refusal. It makes me laugh, but it also makes me sad. Cos, I know she'd like em if she just watched. It's not as if they aren't playing often enough in the apartment, she just leaves and stuff. Kinda frustrating.

Otherwise it's been very easy. Just pop it in and anyone is hooked.

I would not really know where to begin with the conversion.
I know if I showed it to some of my friends they will like it. But not enough to become a Browncoat or to go out of their way to posts here.

I also think that I am the only one who has actually seen it in this parts.

I always thought that Han Solo was a cowboy. So it was an easy thing for me with the Space Western.

jpstargazer, I feel like responding to you personally. First, I love your U2/Firefly correlation. I can never listen to that song without thinking of this fandom.

As for your conversion score. I rock you. :P

Full-fledged Browncoats: 7 (5 of which own box sets)
Partial recruits (have seen, like): 9
Introduced: 5

From that it has branched out. My roomie has converted a small handful as well.

Keep up the good work, folks. Resist the resistant.

My now ex-girlfriend's biggest complaint about the show was the dialogue, saying "Nobody talks like that!" No, we did not breakup because of that.

Clearly she'd just never met any of the browncoats who HAVE adapted their vocabulary to sound like the show ;)

I'm very smart.

AGENTRUSCO- I feel where you're coming from. My husbands friend who practically lives at our house constantly teases me and of course flat out refuses to watch. I know if he gave it a chance he would just love it because he loves all those other sci-fi shows including the old Dr. Who. I just shake my head at his logic.

Converted Browncoats: 2 (bought them each boxsets)
# who LOVE it but not a Browncoat: 1
# who LIKE it: 1

I was surprised that I got my aunt converted because she's really religious and all she wants to talk about is GOD and the Bible but she thought it was awesome. She made me take her to the store to get her own set, of course she didnt really have to force me. I'm the one who eventually ended up buying it for her cause I was so tickled.

i hate it when non browncoats try 2 bring us down! its sill and pointless! i really hate it when they go onto websites just to mock or hate the show/movie! i mean, seriously, why go through all that just to put people down? and ive converted a couple of my friends into browncoats, not as extreme as me, but they're getting there!

Yeah I've never really had anyone say outright that it was stupid, but one time I was trying to explain the show to someone, and they kinda were looking at me like "...what?" But then again, I don't think the show's premise is very easy to explain, or easy to convey how cool it is!

I keep trying to convert people at my school. The only other Browncoat there is my English teacher  and he's pretty hot for an old guy..anyway that's a whole other conversation. My friend Mia keeps meaning to watch it off of iTunes for our comic book project but has only read the script for the piolet.

I love the Castro, because if somebody grabs my ass, I know they're picking my pocket.

Thanks for posting this thread! I was starting to think I was the only one having trouble recruiting!

I've been trying to convert my stepmom and her best friend for over a year.

Last Monday the three of us ran into Ron Glass at the sneak preview of the newly-renovated Griffith Observatory, and they were so taken with him I figured it was a perfect opportunity to renew the onslaught!

The two of them turned to me after Ron left and said, "So, Chris. Tell us again: What exactly is Firefly?"

I tried to give 'em the 10-words-or-less version they wanted, but I didn't think that was sufficient, so I emailed the both of 'em the first paragraph of the Wikipedia entry when I got home.

The best friend is proving more receptive, because she's always been an action-movie freak, and it turns out that she actually had watched "Buffy" a few times, and "something about it grabbed" her.

My stepmom, however, is a tough nut to crack.
