IHEARTFIREFLY

Hey, Nathan posted over on the OB and I haven't seen it anywhere over here yet, so... Here are his words:

"Hello, all. It's been a while since I've posted, and howdidy-doo. I'm posting today to you sci-fi fans, and especially RPGers about my good friend's new book, and subsequently, the new online game called the Rings of Orbis.
http://www.ringsoforbis.com/
I'm logged on, but haven't delved into the game yet. How many of you can figure it out, get back to me, and tell me how to win? Check out the book, I'll be bringing it with me to Cons- autographed, and give a few out. It's called THE SOFTWIRE, the first in a series, and I'm very proud of my pal PJ for writing it. He says he meets Browncoats all the time at conventions, and he can't get over how passionate you all are. He tells folks he knows me, I wonder if people believe him. I don't trust him, just based on looks, but that's my way. Give a shout out to PJ HAARSMA, check out his site, and tell him the Captain sent you.
People more clever than I, would you post this on other sites? People with sites, would you link to his site for me, too?
Keep up the Big Damn Love!

Nathan"

and here is the link:

Enjoy, all you RPG-ers! :)

Also, there is this new post- which prompted me to post here. Again, his words:

"Check this out: In one day, this has become the #1 site through which folks are finding Orbis. Nice work, Browncoats. Does anyone post on Fireflyfans.net? Do those same people know how to post my post over there? Has anyone seen how awesome Gina Torres is (and looks) on Stand Off? Hot! I digress.
Thank you, all of you for being shiny always. You also made me look really cool to my friend, PJ.
Cappity Cap Cap."

I'm glad he mentioned Stand Off. I had forgotten!

Awwww, thanks for posting that here! It's always nice to hear a few words from our captain, i haven't been able to post in a couple days because a lot of errors were popping up, so this was really a great thing to come and see. He seriously seems like the nicest guy ever...but my love will always lie with Jayne

Nicer? Well, I have no idea how I possibly posted nicer than you would have, but thanks. :)
I kept checking to see if someone else had done it because it actually made me nervous.
How ridiculous is that?! :)
I didn't have to talk to him or anything- just copy and paste his words, yet I'm nervous. Silliness.

Ahhh, no, I think he's our Captain... or at least I feel that way. Of course we get nervous.

You did a fine job and if he'd come here and post, he'd see and say thanks I'm sure of it.

Wish he'd post here too. *sigh*

Thanks for the bump IHeartFirefly! Didn't catch this the past couple of days w/ the board going up and down.

Looks pretty interesting. I'll have to check it out and see if I can squeeze a few more spare minutes out of my day.

No problem.
I'm always happy to promote a potentially addictive, time-wasting bit of fun.
Honestly, though, I have not figured out how to start the game.
It looks very cool, and I hope to have more time to figure it out, but it seems to be designed for those who already have a good understanding of these types of games.

I think this game is kind of like neopets (if anyone remembers it). You have pets you feed them, you make money, except in this one your "knudniks" can work and help make the money. You must feed and care for them.

to SHINYALORA:
It might be your cookies setting on your computer or your flash isn't v. 8 or up. It could also be the speed of the internet (cause for me it's slow). Check these.

I am enjoying this game!
Even with the occasional run-ins with the Neewalker I have finaly manage to stay on level 4.
But I haven't figured out a way to kill the Neewalker yet.
Got 3 Knudniks already. This is starting to be fun.
The hardest part of this game is raising money/chits.

I didn't realize it made that much of a difference.

So I bought the book in question as my show of solidarity since the online gaming thing doesn't really enthuse me. It's a decent enough read - a bit slow I supose in the begining but picking up toward the climax - though I am most ceratinly not it's intended audience. Which is to say that it is a young adult novel writen for kids in the 10 to 12 age range. It deals somewhat with a lot of the issues that books targeted at that age range usually deal with: bullies, incomprehensible authority figures, parental abandonment, and the like. The main character is likeable enough and there is a certain sense of wonder to the whole book when we do get the fleeting glimpses of the world around us.

It's week points include a general lack of plot resolution - for which I would blame the fact that it's the first in a series, a milieu that seems at once overly complicated and underedevloped - with characters, creatures, and cultures given the barest of mention and then left by the wayside. I would probably have prefered a more focused treatment of one or two aspects of the strange new world that the heroes find themselves in than the scatershot of intersting things that we get.

I certainly think you could do worse than this as a book for a preteen child interested in science fictiony things and the story that is set up for future books does show some promise.
