Hi
Each year for the past thirty years, there is a sci fi convention in High Point, NC called Stellar Con. I was at a 40th anniversary Star Trek party, and one of the con advisors mentioned they wanted to get different fandoms represented at the con. I mentioned that I post to a Firefly board and that I would deliver the message. I don't know if there is an official chapter nearby, but I thought it would be shiny to have a firefly presence. Below is the web site for the event.

Have a great week! Elaine

I live ten minutes from High Point and had never even heard of Stellar Con until about a week after I got back from Dragon*Con. I know of a very small handful of Browncoats in the area, but not of an official chapter...I haven't found that many "Firefly" fans in NC thus far, and pretty much all the ones I know, I brought into the fold myself.

It'd be nice to have something at this convention, even if it seems to be a pretty small event so far.

And apparently, upon further investigation, planning meetings are held on my university's campus (University of North Carolina at Greensboro)...and the committee is made up of current students and alumni, according to the Stellar Con website. I wonder why I've never heard any of this before...

There are tons of Browncoats in NC! I live in Raleigh, and we were one of the cities to do a SERENITY NOW/EQUALITY NOW charity screening, and we sold out the theater a week before the event! Browncoats have meetings in Raleigh twice a month, and are planning a Browncoat Christmas Party this year.

There was also a SERENITY NOW/EQUALITY NOW event in Charlotte - where I've heard there's a pretty strong group, as well.

The NC Browncoats are online at:

http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/fireflync/

I didn't know about the convention, though. Might have to attend!

I have really got to move to an actual city in NC rather than living out in the middle of nowhere...to a city with buildings and Browncoats and everything else that isn't terrifying and backwoods.

Oh yeah, I'll find out about it. I've heard of Stellar Con, but never had the pleasure of attending. If we're doing some Browncoat things this year, you can count me in. And you go to UNCG??? That's like a half an hour away from me! And why haven't I seen you on facebook? We've started a club. I really think we should start something in the Triad, but I'm a little wary because in the summer, I go back home to Charlotte, but I'll talk all comers. Let me know about some Browncoats to meet up with!

Well, now that I know that, it's within driving distance.
In a similar vein, there is a Browncoat group for the Upstate SC/Western NC set.
http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/GreenvilleBrowncoats/
It's a new group, please, come join!
Perhaps a group trip to the con?

Terri:

If you're the same Terri that's started "Balls and Bayonets Brigade," not only have you seen me, but you allowed me to become an officer in the group. If not, then...you're another Terri. One who ain't the Terri I'm thinking of. Sorry.

I think it would be AWESOME to start up some kind of Piedmont Browncoat chapter...because I really don't think we have one. I go to UNCG, but I live in Thomasville (which is pretty much a dot on the map somewhere between Lexington and Winston), and I haven't found that many Browncoats...I'd definitely love to meet more in the area. I've got a few friends who are Browncoats, and I know they'd be interested, too.

Wow...

As HeatherUnderwood's cousin, I have to agree that we need to get out of the backwoods and into somewhere with a group of Browncoats.

I'm currently at East Carolina University (in Greenville, NC) but I (along with Heather and several other Browncoats) are from near the Wallburg/Thomasville area.

I'm up for doing anything Browncoat related, so if anyone in the Raleigh group or any other groups is doing anything, just send a message to Heather or I and I'm sure will be there with a small contingent.

Hate to double-post, but...

I'm thinkin' that we should make a huge showing at this thing.

Thus, we're gonna contact StellarCon and talk about having some Firefly programming or at least an organized group of Browncoats there, maybe throw a Shindig, something.

If anyone's willing to help organize this thing, Heather and I (and anyone else) could help 'lead the charge,' so to speak.

Also, the idea of a Piedmont Browncoats groups sounds like a good idea...

Good luck with your convention.

Does the convention ever show movies or TV shows?

Hint hint. Serenity or Firefly episodes.

Details are pretty sketchy - the website's pretty limited. It doesn't really go into a lot of detail about the sort of stuff that goes on...but the hope is that they're willing to work with the Browncoats to expand their programming tracks and activities and whatnot.

What information they do have is available at:

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

This is only about 3 hrs from me. I would love to hit another con & hang w/ some browncoats, especially a con that is not overcrowded. The price is cheap on this one too.

I will watch to see how the guest list shapes up before I decide though.

For anyone in the Atlanta area, High Point is about 5 hours away.

Basically, you can get there from anywhere in US as long as you have access to Interstate 85. In fact, the Con is at the Radisson, and to get there you take 85 until you get to the "High Point- Downtown" exit, and the Radisson is down the road a couple of the miles and on the right (right in the middle of downtown).

Anyway, the biggest things we need in order to get a large Firefly event happening at StellarCon are (1) People to go to it, and (2) money to fund it.

I think we're good on #1, but for the second part we need to see what the ConCom for StellarCon has to say.

Terri: I'll send you an e-mail just as soon as I get a chance to chat with Ryan about what he's found out today. Our college schedules are a little chaotic and don't really mesh on certain days...so whenever I hear from him whatever he's figured out today, I'll be sure and let you know something.

And as for throwing a Shindig...surely if we could get even a few people to pitch in, we could make it happen. There's plenty of Browncoats. And if the Radisson would allow it, I'm sure pooling resources (especially time) wouldn't be a problem for those of us in the immediate area who are willing to get this thing organized.

When I hear back I will share with you. I think Heather said she was attending UNC-G so there might be some information there about the event. I'm excited about it already and it is not even close to March. You can't take the sky from me! Elaine

Hi Everyone,
I heard back from Richard, a Stellar Con organizer tonight. Here is what he said:

"Sorry to take so long to get back to you, things are
crazy at the moment. Please don't take it personally
if I take a while to respond to email. Unless I am
told it's urgent, I am more likely to let it sit for a
little, till I get time to go over things.

We have a few tables in the con area for fan
tables. Groups with a table will need to man a display
representing themselves, be interactive with the con
goers, provide some sort of programming, and be at a
fan group panel. If you wish to rent a room for a
party, that's cool!
You will also need to let me know who is the point of
contact, and their email address.
The final decisions as to who will have a table won't
be made for a little while yet, so I can't guarantee
that, but the brown coats are welcome at StellarCon."

Alright, so here's another update.

We've e-mailed the Richard fellow again to see about renting a room for a Shindig at StellarCon and inquired about size, price, etc.

But, we were also thinking that it'd be fun (and a good idea) to have a sort of mini-Shindig at some point so the Piedmont Browncoats and/or the NC Browncoats can meet-n-greet and plan anything else for the the StellarCon Shindig.

We'd love to have anyone from NC, even if you're not exactly from the Piedmont area, come and help us plan. We're taking suggestions for places to meet on our Yahoo groups page (see my signature), and we'd really like to have anyone from NC Browncoats be there to either help plan things out or just give suggestions.

Hi NC browncoats
Since Nathan's episodes on Lost are probably going to be February or later (they are showing 6 episodes now and then the rest starting in Feb)maybe we can have a shindig to watch him on Lost. It can either be pre-Stellarcon convention or post-Stellarcon convention. See http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/piedmontbrowncoats/ for more information about browncoats getting together at the Stellarcon convention in High Point in March. Have a shiny day! Elaine

STOWEAWAY

I wanted to post an update on the Browncoats Fan Table for StellarCon.
The Charlotte Browncoats will be running a booth just outside the dealer room. We'll be showing episodes of Firefly and Done the Impossible to bring the story of our shiny 'verse to the rest of the sci-fi world.
We'll also be selling the limited edition posters for this summer's Can't Stop the Serenity screening. Along with tickets to the June 23rd screening and to the Charlotte, NC Bedlam Bards concert in April.
On Friday night from 7:30-8:30p, we will host a Browncoat panel - come by and support the movement.

You can get details from our Yahoo group:

http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/Charlotte_Browncoats/

Or on our Can't Stop the Serenity website:

http://www.charlottebrowncoats.org/

It seems like there were quite a few people interested in this con at some point. I hope you folks are still planning to come. Come by the booth and say hi!
