I’ve spent the last 3 years in a secluded mountain hut, contemplating Shepherd Book’s past.

Can I get a Praise the Lord!

Well, I have to say that's the best damn theory yet. Whether true, or even likely, or not; it has a very 'Joss' feel to it. I really like that it ignors what his past is specifically, but keeps him crucial. The mystery would remain and more clues would keep coming in, making the viewers/fans continue to wonder and debate about who he truely was. It would be a bit freaky, though, if your idea about info revealed over time was correct. That would mean they'd have to keep his body (or at least key organs) on ice and in storage somewhere to occasionally consult. Morbid and Creepifying.

...man... I really hope that he wasn't one of the bodies they secured to the front of Serenity that burned up on the way out of atmosphere... that would really throw a spanner in the works...

P.S. I heard a rumour that Christina Hendricks is signed to do the sequel next year...!!! As well as Ron & Alan so the mind boggles!!!

Praise the Lord

The technology for putting data into human organs is continuing to be developed by Blue Sun for use by their adepts -- who can reach in and do it. The BHG use the blue wands to scan for embedded data and mash up the organs of folks who contain messages left by River.

The Reavers are also aware of the technology, but a only garbled version has entered their folklore - they consume human flesh in the mistaken belief that they can discover the secrets by eating them.

Mind you, this is a premise visited by Michal Stackpole in I, Jedi, where somebody stores a load of information on jedi techniques by digitising the data and inserting it into plant genomes using each set of base pairs as 0 and 1.

there has been a rumour on the 'Live from Dragon*Con' thread, however it has, sadly, been pretty effectively quashed.....

but they can never take our hope nor our determination to get that BDS!

I finally see the truth about Book!

We’ve all talked about it over and over: Either he was an assassin, or a general, an operative, a judge…etc. We can’t seem to decide on that /B]

Good theory, but in the panel discussion at Dragon*Con with the guy that did the Novelization of the script, he said that Joss hadn't yet decided if Book was an EX-Operative, or an "official of parlament".

Of course, if he hasn't decided yet "For sure", then ANYTHING is possible.

Hello SUCCATASH,

First let me say that I really like your posted theory. Information planted inside the body of ex-operatives or alliance military(Book)? That is a neat concept and could very well be what is going on. But here's my question. Lets say information chips were planted inside several alliance officials. Then they were sent out into the verse with recall chips installed also. Wouldn't parliament or the powers that be keep closer tabs on these fellows? Seems to me they would have found Book much sooner, and then they would not have killed him. I know this is all explainable and it's is my point. Maybe you can tell more about how (or why) the alliance would do this then cut their control ties so that they have lost the whereabouts on Book and maybe the others.

Z

BTW this would make a good story to write about and put up in the fanfic section.

Mal ordered it, and when the protest almost began, he gave a Mal "Don't f**k with my way" look, backing everyone down. Of course, it wouldn't be the first time Mal [and Book] pulled one over on both the crew and the audience. But either someone disobeyed (Jayne protecting his workout buddy in one of those rare poignant Jayne moments?), or there was an off-camera understanding (Zoe doubtless being the one to put Book's body out there in the first place--the others given to too much sentiment, would just as likely be the best choice to pull the switcheroo).

Great idea, Succatash, and fun to ponder.

"Well, here I am."

Yeah, that's definitely a weak point to this idea. Maybe the Blue Sun faction and the Alliance parliament are at odds. Hmmm.

Also, I would think Simon might notice something odd about Book's physiology.

I will climb back up to the mountain hut and ponder some more. :)

Thanks to all for the positive responses. I also really like PurpleBelly's idea about why Reavers eat people!

...Just don't send anyone (me, in particular) any oily parcels through the mail, with wires poking through the plain brown wrapper and sawdust falling out, okay?

I don't know if your Book 'manifesto' will make the Times, but we'll definitely happily read it here. We are -- after all -- nothing if not conspiracy buffs...

P.S.
Packages in plain brown wrappers should not explode the moment you open them... What a buzz-kill.

Maybe Book's body contained the plans to a top secret Alliance space station, equipped with a weapon powerful enough to destroy an entire planet...wait, so Book was basically the R2D2 of the 'Verse? I can live with that, but there better be a beautiful princess with ear-buns involved, that's all I have to say.

Now I am learning about scary.

This really is an interesting theory. I love how you worked in Book's name so well.

Now, could you please come up with something that will make Wash's fans happy too? Please? You must have some brain power to spare for that.

Thanks!

That's got to be the most creative theory I've ever heard. Dang.

I don't think the Captain actually ordered Book to be one of the really skinny dudes outside. I think that was just an out-take. Same with the kid who was takin' a dirtnap with the baby Jesus.
