Why did the crew not keep it?

If I were the captain of a Firefly, and such a vehicle came into my posession, i'd have it repainted, maybe a few modifications. It can be used to move heavier and larger cargoes than The Mule can, can also be used to hot insertion and extraction of crewmembers. It's faster than the Mule, and im assuming its also spaceworthy?

Why wouldn't you keep it?

It would be awfully hard to store when not in use. Besides, where would you put the cows?!?

I thought that too, but in the film they have a harness rigged up for the hovering thing, why not just do the same?

EMBERS

maybe they were concerned about keeping such direct evidence of their involvement in what would have been recorded as a major crime (besides pointing directly to Simon & River's where-abouts)...

in the comics we learn that the two blue hand guys are hot on their trail after Ariel.

True, but even then, surely it'd be easy enough to repaint and modify to look different? Since it really would be worth keeping.

Well, it was a junker so it may not have had many more flights left in her. Even with Kaylee's magic touch; remember that they were planning on a one-time use.

I see no reason to think that it is spaceworthy. Air vehicles would still be useful in the verse without having to break atmo. And since it's just a modified Russian helicopter.....

And bear in mind that Serenity has 2 shuttles that have cargo capacity, are known to be spaceworthy and are in better repair than the ambulance. I figure it would be worth more to sell it to some border town and pocket the filty lucre.

Maybe first border moon they hit they sold it along with some of the booty...

I'm sure even if the thing was a heap, they could have made some cash
