We need more than the "Standard two parties", "Bad and Worse", to choose from...

How about we add "God Awful"?

And to go futher, I think we oughta legalize ALL drugs, and sell them at the ABC store like Alcohol, with the same taxes on them.. that would put drug gangs out of business INSTANTLY...

Agreed

when was the last time anyone heard of an "Alcohol gang"?

30's

As long as they do it at home and don't drive, it's their business if they want to destroy their lives with Drugs OR alcohol...

I think that penalties should be inreased for crimes commited while on drugs, but agreed.

Disagree...butchered isn't a strong enough word.

Well, I was trying to keep words in the realm of civility... But I agree, not NEARLY descriptive enough for what they did to the book ;)

'zactly.. during the (Failed) Prohibition attempt... When you ban something people want, they WILL get it somewhere, prices rise, and resources are (often) wasted fighting a loosing battle against it

I just about see where he's coming from, but don't agree at all - that it's either "facist" or "conservative". There are not moral absolutes in Firefly/Serenity - "The Alliance isn't some evil empire" - and that's very true. It isn't particularly nice, but much of what it does is good for the people. The reason it might be seen as "evil" is only because it is the antagonist - because Mal and his crew don't like it. As for claims it's socialistic - what evidence is there for that? In the episode Safe, it's made pretty clear that only certain people are allowed medical treatment - we don't know what are the requirements for it, but it certainly isn't egalitarian. The differences between the border planets and the core also show that. The Alliance is totalitarian, definitely. But I don't see how that equates to socialist or communist. The left-right political spectrum is inadequate, as explained here: http://www.politicalcompass.org/

The Alliance has a high positive score on the fascist-libertarian scale, but there isn't a lot to suggest where it is economically.

We're intelligent adaptable humans, with the choice to be domesticated cattle if we so wish.

Or, as is your case, we can choose to be Asses. Well, it's true.

NoSad7, thanx for the link to the interview- glad to know somebody out there in MovieLand is looking at it.

I think he overstates the problems- sure it would be a large-scale film, a revolution is not a small topic, but it doesn't break new ground in effects shots-- not a lot of expensive sets to create from scratch, not a *LOT* of laser duels and fancy explosions, not bunches of spaece ships to design and feature--

( OH, maybe that's why HollyWierd isn't interested.)

As for the political discussions, those are central to the film, but with some trimming, could be made to work

And worth doing...

I haven't looked at this thread in a while, but I just noticed that I got a few responces to what I said. I just wanted to say one more thing and I'll be done.

I don't think Joss Whedon had a political agenda. Anything can be interpreted any way that anybody wants. Yeah, Joss Whedon does like to introduce ideas to us, but I really don't think that he is trying to say anything specific about our government.

He's a self-Confessed Libertarian, When you can get a straight answer out of him anyway ;) But I've also heard people say he said he was a Democrat, a Republican and a Constitutionalist.. all I've ever PERSONALLY witnessed was the Libertarian statement... And AS a libertarian, I see it through that lense, and the movie/series sticks to the libertarian Ideals pretty closely (Well, Except for the killin and robbin ;)

Once you see enough of a person to know their political leanings (Like me), you can also see those "Leanings" in their work/statements, and even work ethic.. I treat my employess the same way I live, What they do is none of my business as long as they aren't on MY clock doing it, and it doesn't affect anyone else in a negative way.

Your polical/religious/etc ideals can't help but spill over into your work/leadership.. at least I can't seem to keep it from happening ;)

Um, where did that come from?

I think that marxism is a wonderful idea on paper and would love to see it work. However, I also think that marxism goes against human nature and will never work in real life unless there are some HUGE changes in the way people act.

But no, I have never been a member of any communist party and I really can't see that ever happening.
