Can't help it - gotta share this. In my cybertravels to locate
foreign copies of the Serenity DVD, I've been greatly assisted by
altavista's bable fish translator; it's helped me make my way through
many a strange ordering process.

However, some of the translations are just too much.
This is one from Russian to English:

>Captain mal'kol'm Reynolds - hardened in combat veteran of galactic
Civil War, who was battling himself not on that (lost) side, he earns
to the life by small crimes and transports loads aboard its ship "To
sereniti". It heads the small different coat command, which whisks
away by order to the most usual family, - her terms eternally
quarrel, not tyuey soblyudayut discipline, but they will betray their
captain [what?? -hmg] and will go never after it although to the edge
of light... 2517.

>The resources of the Earth have long ago been exhausted, and its
existence itself became almost legend. Humanity learned to tera-form
planet and moved to master space. Some planets, in essence in the
center of galaxy, not were shared unfairly by resources and allowed
their colonizers to develop rich high(ly)-technological societies. By
others it transported less. Several central planets formed the
alliance, which began war for the authority above the remaining
peaces of galaxy. Independent variables - the inhabitants of the
outskirts thus named themselves - tried to resist, but they was
defeated. Captain mal'kol'm "is small" Reynolds [!!!-hmg] the former
sergeant of the army of independent variables [ah, yes... we happy,
we few, we independent variables of New England! -hmg] it acquired on
the sale the small spacecraft of class glowworm (Firefly), he named
him Serenity into the memory about the battle in Serenity Valley and
collected, it is necessary to say that very motley command.

>The first assistant Zoya also war veteran, that served under the
command is small and unconditionally devoted to it. Its husband
modest, who possesses an original feeling of the humor Of uosh
[that's humor of Wash -hmg], became pilot Serenity. Native of one of
the moons of the outskirts merry and cheerful pick [Kaylee -hmg]
occupied place mechanics. Unprincipled mercenary and cutthroat Jain
in spite of the sometimes impervious bluntness it is irreplaceable in
the fight. The elite courtesan of Isnard [such a lovely name! -hmg]
leases one of rescue shatlov of ship and he frequently renders
command the invaluable aid in cases when for the solution of problem
they are necessary not rough force, but the habits of diplomacy and
behavior in high society.

>Soon wise preacher buk [Book -hmg] is joined to the crew, whose past
it is clear not so righteous, as it may seem to the first view ship
doctor he becomes inhabitant of one of the central planets Simon tam.
together with Simon onboard Serenity it falls his sister Of river -
potential ekstrasens [you say that like it was a bad thing -hmg]and
the victim of the experiments of the secret services of alliance.
Command is assembled and Serenity begins its infinite complete of
danger and adventures flight among planets and moons of the
outskirts, aging to be held further from the severe forces of
alliance. Crew starts on any work, usually without occupying himself
by thoughts about that, it can prove to be how decent and legal.

>Criticisms baptized the genre of series as "fantastic western".
Actually the atmosphere of universe Firefly in many respects
resembles times after the end of the Civil War OF THE USA. The
central high(ly)-technological planets of alliance flourish under the
rule of the corrupted autocracy, while in the majority of primitive
it is world the outskirts they reign the "laws" of the Wild West.
Even in the clothing of characters it is possible to see many details
from the details of North America the middle of the 19th century.
From the majority of similar space sagas the series is differed so in
terms of the complete absence of inoplanetyan [Ha! I knew something
was missing! -hmg].

>Unfortunately, in spite of very wide success [swhat? -hmg], series
was closed. Among the reasons for basic it were mentioned the absence
of means for the continuation.

>Actually, with the surveys are used many expensive specials-effect,
for which, by the way, on 13 September, 2003, the series was obtained
Emmy in nomination Outstanding Special Visual Effects For A Series.

>During July 2004 FOX beginning of the survey of the full-length film
Serenity in Israel [And you thought it was a Universal Studio
lot... -hmg].
Judging by the communications on the official site
( http://www.serenitymovie.com/) in it will participate all actors of
series. The events of film will occur 6 months after events in series
Objects in space. Premier it is assigned on 22 April 2005. There are
the rumors, based on the unofficial statements Of dzhossa Of vedona
[very reliable source! -hmg], which this film is planned to become
the first part of the trilogy. On 2 August 2004 all photographed
series of series are released on DVD.

Hope enjoyed you camel,
- Ita Moon

!!P.S. Still trying to get a Russian language copy of the DVD. Most
sites won't export to U.S. Anyone got a friend over there, or
traveling there? They're only about $10 USD and I'd love to
reimburse anyone who can get their hands on one.
Thanks!

Ah, babelfish. An endless source of fun!

Direct translations can be pretty hairy. Have you ever played the Chinese translation quote game? You take an English quote from Firefly or Serenity, translate it into Chinese using babelfish, then translate the translation back into English using the same program and post it. Everyone else has to get the quote. To say they get lost in translation is an understatement of mythic proportions! It usually makes for a very funny thead though.

EDIT- because I just remembered how the translated version of Revenge of the Sith went down in net history as a whole new level of awfulness. I ~think~ it was the Japanese translation, but I could be wrong.

Everyone's favourite was the part where Anakin screams "Nooooooooooooo!" The translation that appeared on the screen was "Do not want!"

I meant to ask this earlier - how come you're looking for a Russian version of Serenity? Are you collecting different languages or do you speak Russian yourself?

And I don't know if you'll have an answer for this one, but where the heck did they get "is small" Reynolds from???

Nope. Just collecting all the various dubbed versions. It's fascinating how each language lends different nuances to the script, and more importantly, how the different voice actors change the movie. e.g., An asian version has Zoe's lines spoken in a high-pitched breathy voice. Doesn't quite work for me. Also, spoken (and written for that matter)German takes much more time to convey the same meaning: The actors end up speaking very very fast to get the dialogue in. The best version I've heard so far in the Magyar (Hungarian) on the Aussie disks.

Haven't the foggiest notion how the software got that one. It's brilliant.

Oh, and when Nathan was obliging signing ALL of the collection (Out of fairness to the autograph line, and the 'rules', I only asked him to pick One!)he damaged my calm by telling me that a cousin of his had picked up a version in Qatar. Oi! Another one to chase down.

Anyone else here familiar with Engrish.com?

A similar idea is mentioned here, except using Japanese translation.

Where does "Is small" come from? Hmmm, a quick check on Babelfish reveals that Russian for "small" is "malo". I did already know that "malchik" is Russian for "boy"... oops, the song "Malchik Gay" by a Certain Russian Girl Duo has just popped into my head... ...

"No, I lean towards womenfolk"
