Ok, I'm VERY sorry but I can't seem to find this info anywhere, so:

1)What is a browncoat?

2)What do they do?

3)How do I become one?

4)Do I really need a brown coat?

A Browncoat is a euphemism for a rebel soldier in the Firefly T.V. show. Kinda like, Red Coat, Blue Belly, Minute Man, Johnny Reb, Billy Yank, etc. Fans of the show Firefly consider themselves Browncoats. You don't need a Browncoat, you just have to love the T.V. show Firefly. (Star Trek buffs consider themselves "Trekkies." We're Browncoats.)

Most of us don't do much but chat about Firefly or bitch about that God damned T.V. network fox. (fox has lost it's capitalization privledges around these parts.) But some of us do really good things. I'm sure you'll hear from them soon enough on this link.

But, hey wouldn't it be "shiny" to actually have a "Brown" coat.

Oh, yes. I certainly do have a brown coat. Two, as a matter of fact. But, it's not really necessary. I only wish I had a brown coat like Mal's.

My husband found a great brown coat, made out of something called Oilskin, from a manufacturer based in Australia. The model of the coat is called the Tasman and the site he found is called outbacksaddles.com. Other places might have it though, the manufacturer is called simply Down Under. Without the cape (it's detachable), it looks a lot like the Captain's.

I get the impression that Mal's coat is leather, but the oilskin has a similar look and I would only be sure if I could compare textures.

I gotta brown coat.

While it's not quite as fancified as Mal's is, it's a nice, heavy Carhart workin-on-stuff kinda coat, and I've revelled in wearing it since firefly came out.

Suck THAT, fox

Coincidentally, everytime you look at an old Civil War photograph that was taken in the winter, the soldiers, North and South, are wearing coats that have elbow length capes, much like the duster you described. These jackets were called "Great coats." I just thought I'd draw attention to your rather accurate use of the word "great."

Plus, it is very likely that the Captain's coat is made of oilskin. Suede would get filthy much to quickly. His brown coat would be a black coat after a week of wearing it in the elements. Besides, a full length suede coat might be a little feminine for the Captain, and a full length leather jacket would be just too damn hot in the desert climates that we see our Captain in. I'll have to keep my eyes open for a decent picture of the Captain in his duster to compare to the coat you described on that website.
