Does it offer a switch where the sound effects in the space scenes can be shut off?

Cuz that would be awesome.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Are you talking about the sound effects in the ion cloud scene? No, can't turn those off. All scenes out in space, though, have no sound effects but the music, as far as I recall.

Except when they shoot the cannon at the Reavers, though it was muffled. I think anything like explosions tended to have a subdued sound rather then none.

True. It was quite muffled, and we were right next to it, so to speak. And it must have held some form of oxygen in it or it couldn't have fired, so I can see that noise traveling a short way.
Wonder if there are any astronaut Browncoats. They might know...

Wasn't there a thread a while back about Nasa and Browncoats? Maybe they have an e-mail address?

Right, Nasa Browncoats, with Mal's speach about love being given and all that. I think they said a lot of it was classified for the moment.

Well, if there's a physics lovin' browncoat out there I'd love to read an essay on real physics and their application to Firefly and other sci-fi shows.

It would have to be simple though. Very simple. Physics for Dummies simple.

If you assume that the sound we hear when the cannon fires is from Mal's perspective, there's really no problem. Sound normally travels through air (in our day-to-day experience), but other media can conduct sound too.

Mal heard the cannon fire through the hull of the ship. More specifically, from the barrel of the cannon, through its mounts, the hull, the seat he was in, his suit, and the seat of his pants... plus the air inside his suit.

By the way, there are plenty of real-world applications of this principle, including bone-conduction earpieces that couple audio to the bones near your ears rather than through the ear canal (like a normal headphone). Also some spy gear that "listens" to the vibrations of the panes of glass from outside a room.

And there are mouth pieces like that too, I think! Little cell phone mics that hang down and are closer to your throat than your mouth, and they work mostly by vibration (I think). They're pretty shiny.

At some point I noticed that just about everywhere you hear sound in space there is some atmo to conduct, such as the opening scene where they are entering atmo. Things are quiet until the atmo starts hitting the ship, iirc. The cannon firing can be explained by conduction though the metal and suit. And the battle with the reavers and alliance in the ion cloud did happen in a cloud after all, so there had to be some substance there which would conduct sound.
